Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 284: Evolution Raven
Chapter 284: Chapter 284: Evolution Raven
Mountain No. 50 was east of Mountain No. 49, and Mountain No. 52 was north of it, neither far from the territory. Xin Yu stated her terms for the trade. "Ten pounds of Yellow Light Chestnuts and two pounds of Green Light Pine Nuts."
"Deal." Xiaqing nodded immediately; she didn’t have time to haggle.
"Come in." Xin Yu led Xiaqing to a small hut not far from the No. 8 Territory’s signpost. She pulled a stack of leaves and grass twine from a drawer against the wall. "Wrap the wolf dung into small packets with these leaves and tie them up. I’ll go get the equipment."
"Alright." Xiaqing followed the rules and didn’t look around. She sat at the rough, cracked wooden table and quickly began parcelling the wolf dung.
Xin Yu left alone but returned with two birds, one large and one small.
The large one was an Evolved Jade Belt Sea Eagle, a bird Xiaqing was very familiar with. As majestic as these birds were in the sky, they were just as comical waddling on the ground. If Xiaqing hadn’t gotten used to keeping a straight face back at her territory, she might have cracked up right then.
The small one was an Evolution Raven, perched on Xin Yu’s shoulder, its color rivaling Xiaqing’s Black Feathered Rooster. When it noticed Xiaqing looking at it, the Crow raised its wings and greeted her in a very clear, characteristically avian voice, "Hello."
Xin Yu calmly introduced it to Xiaqing. "This is my companion, Jasmine."
After a couple of seconds, Xiaqing could tell it was a Brain Domain Evolution Bird. Since it was Xin Yu’s companion and could talk, Xiaqing raised her hand and greeted it. "Hello, Jasmine. I’m Xiaqing, from the Third Territory."
"Good, very good." The Crow was delighted and started hopping around the small hut. The Evolved Jade Belt Sea Eagle didn’t enter the hut, instead standing at the door preening its brown feathers.
Xin Yu wasn’t a woman of many words. She came in, packed the leaf-wrapped bundles of wolf dung Xiaqing had prepared into a backpack, and then fitted it onto the Jade Belt Sea Eagle.
The backpack’s color matched its back feathers. It was well-made from high-quality materials, completely in a different league from the saddlebags Xiaqing had made for Sheep Leader.
But it served the same purpose.
After the wolf dung was packed, Xin Yu activated the cameras on the Jade Belt Sea Eagle and the Crow. She gently stroked both birds’ heads. "Go on."
The Jade Belt Sea Eagle flapped its wings, carrying the wolf dung and the Crow high into the sky, and vanished in the blink of an eye.
Xin Yu opened a laptop and gestured for Xiaqing to come over and watch with her.
The laptop was connected to the cameras on the two birds. Watching Mountain No. 49 fly by on the screen, Xiaqing finally confirmed that the Sea Eagle was a Speed Evolver.
"Jasmine, descend."
After the Jade Belt Sea Eagle flew over Mountain No. 49, Xin Yu gave the command through her walkie-talkie. The mountains and trees on the laptop screen zoomed in, and Xiaqing soon spotted the Wolf Hunting Team in the valley between Mountain No. 49 and Mountain No. 50.
From this angle, the humans were just little black dots. The two Evolutionary dogs leading the way were actually the easiest to identify.
Jasmine skillfully commanded her tamed beast to avoid the team. The massive Jade Belt Sea Eagle then landed on a large tree on Mountain No. 50, and the Crow, holding the grass-leaf packets, began spreading the wolf dung according to Xin Yu’s orders.
Through the Crow’s camera, Xiaqing saw a fleeting glimpse of an Evolution Bear. She quickly typed a message on her phone and showed it to Xin Yu.
Xin Yu glanced at it and commanded the Crow, "Jasmine, fly back and drop the stuff into the bear’s den."
Seeing the Crow find the bear’s den accurately and skillfully without any guidance from Xin Yu, Xiaqing knew this wasn’t Jasmine’s first time here.
After dropping all the wolf dung, the Crow returned to the Jade Belt Sea Eagle’s back. The eagle took off, and the two birds moved to another spot to continue their work.
Just as all the wolf dung was scattered and the two birds were flying back to the territory, Xiaqing heard the frantic barking of the Wolf Hunting Team’s Evolutionary dogs.
The barking was very clear, and Xiaqing’s heart tightened. When the Jade Belt Sea Eagle flew higher, she saw the Wolf Hunting Team leave the valley and enter Mountain No. 50. Her heart settled a bit when she saw they weren’t chasing the Sea Eagle.
The Wolf Hunting Team was being lured by the wolf dung toward the Third Peak of Mountain No. 50—the Evolution Bears’ territory. This reduced the danger to the Wolf Group by more than half. If the Wolf Hunting Team encountered the Evolution Bears, they would have to call off their expedition and retreat from the Evolution Forest as quickly as possible, resolving the crisis for the Wolf Group entirely.
They dared to search the Evolution Forest for the Evolutionary Wolf that had escaped from the Green Dragon Team because they inferred it had submitted to humans for some time, losing its wolfish pride. They also assumed it would carry a human scent, causing it to be rejected by other Wolf Groups and forced to survive alone in the Evolution Forest.
No matter how strong a lone wolf was, a team of over twenty people could capture it.
But they wouldn’t dare to provoke an Evolution Bear that was on its own. That was because deep within this part of the Evolution Forest, there were Brain Domain Evolutionary Bears—two of them, in fact.
Their equipment was good, but not good enough to handle a Bear Group led by Brain Domain Evolutionary Bears.
Once the two birds returned safely to the No. 8 Territory, Xiaqing stood up to leave. "Thank you. I’ll go get the supplies and have them sent over."
"Have the patrol team deliver them," Xin Yu said, then reminded Xiaqing, "I don’t want anyone else to know I have Tamed birds."
"Right, right." The Crow chimed in, landing on Xin Yu’s shoulder.
"Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone." ’These birds are Xin Yu’s companions, on par with Sheep Leader in my own eyes. I’m already incredibly grateful that she was willing to help; how could I let the No. 8 Territory fall into danger because of me?’
Xin Yu pulled out her phone. "Let’s exchange contact info. We can discuss further cooperation after you get your wolf back."
Xiaqing added Xin Yu’s contact information and explained her relationship with the Evolutionary Wolf. "The wolf is just recovering in my territory. It doesn’t fully obey my commands, and it might not even come back."
Xin Yu nodded but said nothing more.
On her way back along the isolation belt, Xiaqing ran into the patrol team. Hu Zi waved his arm happily. "Sister Qing!"
Before Xiaqing could respond, the roar of an Evolution Bear echoed from Mountain No. 50. ’The Wolf Hunting Team has run into the Evolution Bears!’
"Xiaqing, get back to the territory, now!" Tan Junjie said with a grim expression, immediately turning on his walkie-talkie to warn everyone in the territory to be cautious about going out.
Xiaqing ran quickly along the isolation belt back to her territory. When Sheep Leader saw her, it charged over, bleating.
Chen Zheng, who was following behind, explained, "The last time you all went to Mountain No. 50 to gather pine nuts, there was a bear roar on the first day, too. Sheep Leader stayed home and didn’t come out back then. Its reaction is much stronger this time."
Xiaqing stroked Sheep Leader, who was pressing against her for protection. "That’s because the wolf was at home then. Do you think this roar is different from the last one?"
Chen Zheng nodded. "The sound was clearer last time."
’Last time there were two bears, and they were above the halfway point of the mountain, so the roar carried farther and was clearer. But the difference Xiaqing heard wasn’t about the volume, but the emotion contained within the roar.’
