Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 175: Evolutionary Sheep, Gone Mad
Chapter 175: Chapter 175: Evolutionary Sheep, Gone Mad
"Yes." The team member at the door immediately used their walkie-talkie to relay Xu Pin’s order.
Chang Li, carrying only a small medical kit, was escorted by two Green Dragon Team members into the Third Territory, arriving at the village entrance. When she opened her kit to get the anesthetic, Xiaqing stopped her. "Sister Li, come into the village with me. The Head Wolf isn’t here, it’s fine."
Chang Li followed Xiaqing home and found another sick wolf in the sheep pen. "Did the Wolf Group bring this one over too?"
"Mhm," Xiaqing replied as she put medicine into the wolf’s water basin. "It came once the night before last, then came back last night and didn’t leave. Sister Li, can you tell what’s wrong with it?"
Chang Li specialized in external injuries, but she wasn’t completely ignorant of other diseases. "It looks like a parasitic infection, and its eyes are inflamed. I suspect some Evolutionary Biology has invaded its eyes. I have anti-parasitic medicine in my kit, but it might not work. Animals in the Evolution Forest usually find their own medicine when they get sick. For this wolf to be in such a bad state, it means the usual herbal dewormers probably don’t work on it."
After the Natural Disaster, all medicines used by humans were refined from medicinal herbs.
’Are there any side effects?’ This Sick Wolf was very important to the Head Wolf; it had even turned on Xiaqing last night for the sick one’s sake. ’If giving it medicine causes a problem, my relationship with the Wolf Group will really be over.’
Chang Li replied, "The side effect is diarrhea, but it’s not fatal. If left untreated, in its current state, it won’t live for more than a few days anyway."
Xiaqing used a stick to push the water basin inside for the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf to drink the medicated water. The injured wolves were already used to taking medicine. This time, however, the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf actually let the frail Sick Wolf lying next to the Sheep Leader drink first.
The Sick Wolf slowly walked over to the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf, fumbled to find the water basin, and drank some water. Afterward, the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf licked its patchy, balding ears a few times, then turned its head to look at Xiaqing.
Xiaqing actually saw a plea in the wolf’s eyes.
Chang Li, who had treated countless humans in the ten years since the Natural Disaster, was seeing such a helpless, pleading expression on an animal for the first time. She couldn’t help but be moved.
"Before the Natural Disaster, wolves were already animals that cherished their families and cared for their companions. After the Natural Disaster, they had to rely on their packs to survive in the Evolution Forest, so they’ve become even more united—even showing more warmth than many humans during the calamity. In an Evolution Wolf Group, the old and weak are cared for by the rest of the pack."
"This sick, weak wolf is likely an elder to this Broken Waist Wolf. It was under this elder’s protection and care that it survived its long formative years, so it feels gratitude, appreciation, and dependence toward it. That’s why, even though it’s so badly injured itself, it’s still trying to ask a human for help to save its elder."
"Xiaqing, will you save this Sick Wolf?"
A territory has its own rules. This was Xiaqing’s territory, and the Wolf Group had come to her for help. Therefore, although Chang Li was a doctor and had the medicine, the decision of whether or not to save the wolf was ultimately Xiaqing’s to make.
If Xiaqing disagreed but Chang Li still wanted to save the wolf, she would need Xiaqing’s permission to take it back to the No.1 Territory for treatment.
Wolves were extremely cautious, ferocious animals. They clearly trusted Xiaqing, who had an Evolutionary Animal for a companion, more, and they wouldn’t necessarily agree to leave the Third Territory for the No.1 Territory.
Looking at the Sheep Leader standing affectionately next to the skinny wolf, Xiaqing asked, "How many points?"
Chang Li answered immediately, "Lab tests plus medicine will only be one hundred and fifty points in total."
One hundred and fifty points was a lot for most people, but for Xiaqing, it was entirely affordable. She nodded. "Alright, I’ll pay with Yellow Light Vegetables. How much time do we have left?"
"Less than half an hour." Chang Li quickly got ready. "Once the anesthetic takes effect, you’ll need to carry it out. I have to draw blood to take back for analysis."
Ten minutes after the wolves drank the anesthetic-laced water, they were immobilized. Xiaqing started by carrying out the Sick Wolf, which was so thin it was practically weightless.
Chang Li immediately drew blood and examined the wolf. "There are no large parasites on its body, but it has a fungal infection. The hair loss is severe."
With that, Chang Li handed Xiaqing a bag of medicinal powder. "Rub this on it. Cover its whole body while I check its eyes."
As they watched Xiaqing and the other human bustle around the Sick Wolf, the broken leg wolf’s gaze remained fierce, but the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf’s face showed what looked like an expression of joy.
Xiaqing had just finished rubbing the powder on the wolf when Hu Zifeng’s voice came through her walkie-talkie. "Xiaqing, what’s the status?"
Xiaqing replied, "They’re anesthetized."
"Most of the Su Feng Team’s lookouts have pulled back. There are only two left outside your territory. Jing Kuan, Eryong, and I will be there momentarily. You and Chang Li need to go to the western isolation strip to draw their attention. We’ll use that opportunity to move the Wolf Group."
"Roger that. Moving out now."
Xiaqing turned to Chang Li. "Sister Li, we have to get to the western isolation strip right away. Give me the deworming medicine."
Chang Li handed the medicine to Xiaqing. "The wolf has Evolution Grass Seeds embedded in its eyes. It needs surgery to remove them as soon as possible."
After the great biological evolution, some Evolved Plants no longer needed soil to reproduce; the flesh and blood of animals had become their incubators. The corpses of humans and animals consumed by such plants were a common sight.
"We don’t have time. We’ll worry about that after we get through this crisis." Xiaqing took the pill, pried open the Sick Wolf’s mouth, and pushed it in. She poured a couple of mouthfuls of water into its mouth and stroked its bony neck to help it swallow.
Xiaqing stood up and, noticing the Brain Domain Evolution Wolf’s eyes following her, gave a simple explanation. "There’s danger in my territory, so I’m having you moved to a valley for now. Don’t worry, I won’t go back on our deal. Once the danger is over, I’ll come to the valley to treat your wounds. But in exchange for saving it, you must give me the promised resources."
The Green Light Python that Xiaqing had confiscated didn’t count.
The Sheep Leader nudged the frail Sick Wolf with its head, looking reluctant to see it go. Xiaqing quickly pulled out her phone and, CLICK! CLICK!, snapped a few pictures of the Sick Wolf.
When Hu Zifeng arrived with two team members with Speed evolution to pack up the anesthetized wolves, the Sheep Leader grew agitated. It pawed at the ground, looking like it was about to send them flying with a headbutt.
Xiaqing threw her arms around the Sheep Leader’s neck. "Leader, stop making a fuss! If you don’t let them go now, something terrible will happen. We’ll bring them back once the danger has passed."
The Sheep Leader trusted Xiaqing, but it didn’t trust Hu Zifeng and his people. It struggled fiercely, bleating nonstop and refusing to let them touch the wolves.
Time was tight. Xiaqing had no choice but to hoist the Sheep Leader onto her shoulders and escort Chang Li to the isolation strip outside the West Buffer Forest. A bleating sheep was far too conspicuous.
As they parted ways at the isolation strip, Xiaqing solemnly thanked Chang Li. "Thank you so much for the medicine, Doctor Chang. Once my Sheep Leader is feeling better, I’ll go hunting in the Evolution Forest to pay you back for the medicine and your consultation fee."
Against the soundtrack of the Sheep Leader’s furious bleating, Xiaqing’s words were incredibly convincing.
Chang Li knew which patient Xiaqing was actually referring to and earnestly advised her, "My medicine isn’t guaranteed to work. If it fails, you’ll need to ask Lord No.7 for help as soon as possible."
Xiaqing nodded. Only after watching Chang Li and her escorts enter the No.1 Territory’s Buffer Forest did she turn back, still carrying the fuming Sheep Leader on her shoulders.
She hadn’t gone more than a dozen meters when she heard someone reporting in a low voice over a walkie-talkie. It was one of the lookouts, clad in a Ghillie Suit and lying prone on the isolation strip. "The Green Dragon Team’s Team doctor, Chang Li, has returned to the No.1 Territory with her people. She didn’t take anything but her medical kit. The Evolutionary Sheep in the Third Territory was hit in the brain by an ultrasound attack and has gone crazy."
Xiaqing was left speechless.
