Chapter 295: What the Sky Cannot Hold (2)

"If you could not tell the difference, how am I supposed to?!" Estella cried out.

She summoned a massive, spinning array of dark cosmic needles around her floating form. The corrupted starlight hummed with lethal intent.

"How am I supposed to trust anything you say?" Estella demanded, the tears freezing on her cheeks. "How can I trust your hands to hold me when they are the exact same hands that deliberately locked me out in the cold to break my mind?"

She pushed harder, her grief demanding absolute clarity in a world built entirely on shades of gray. She refused to accept a half-truth. She needed to know what was real, or she was going to burn the entire sky to the ground trying to find it.

Draven realized pragmatism would not save them. Cold logic had utterly failed. The commander had to die so the boy could finally speak.

"Because I love you!" Draven roared.

The words tore out of his throat, raw, unshielded, and completely devoid of any calculation.

"Not as a weapon! Not as a piece on my board! Not as the Star of Ruin!" Draven shouted, closing the distance between them despite the glowing cosmic needles pointed at his chest. "I love you, Estella!"

He spilled his entire endgame into the freezing sky.

"I pushed you away because I thought the grief would trigger the power we needed to survive," Draven confessed rapidly. "But I never planned to leave you in the dark. My entire goal was to win this war, to shatter the Cult, to fix the broken timeline, and then to completely stop pretending!"

He looked directly into her violet eyes.

"I wanted to build a world where you never had to be a weapon again," Draven said, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading whisper. "I wanted to clear the board just so I could simply stand beside you."

The profound, unfiltered confession hit her like a physical blow.

But the Astral-Collapse was already too far gone. The corrupted mana had reached a critical mass, and the volatile energy violently demanded a release. The realization that he truly loved her collided with the overwhelming rage of the betrayal, creating a paradoxical, unstable storm in her core.

Estella screamed, throwing her head back. She funneled every single drop of her grief, love, and fury into one catastrophic event.

[Supernova Pulse]

The sky turned a blinding, incandescent white. The pulse of corrupted starlight expanded outward in a massive, spherical shockwave, promising to eradicate everything in its path.

Draven did not run. He did not engage a vector to dodge the blast.

He poured every remaining ounce of his stamina into his kinetic authority. He wrapped a massive, multi-layered vector field completely around the expanding supernova. He did not try to crush her magic; he threw his entire physical existence into containing the expanding void to protect her from her own destruction.

The two forces clashed violently at terminal altitude.

It was a genuinely lethal exchange. The air was incredibly thin. Blood began to drip steadily from Draven’s nose as his brain pushed past its physical limits. Estella’s pale skin cracked, glowing with volatile dark energy as the magic tore at her cellular structure. They were burning each other alive in the sky.

The sheer, catastrophic output could not last.

The intense pressure held for ten agonizing seconds before the climax finally broke them both. The dark nebula shattered like a fragile glass pane, raining harmlessly down toward the distant city as fading, glittering embers.

Estella’s mana core completely emptied. The dark purple corruption vanished, leaving her entirely hollow.

Draven’s stamina hit rock bottom. His vision blurred, and the massive vector containment field dissolved into the wind.

They began to fall.

Gravity aggressively reasserted its hold on their exhausted bodies. The rushing wind tore wildly at their clothes as they plummeted toward the earth.

Draven forced his bleeding mind to generate one final, incredibly weak upward vector. He caught them both, arresting their downward momentum just before they hit the cloud line.

They drifted slowly in the moonlight, suspended by a fragile thread of kinetic force. They were panting heavily, staring at each other, physically and emotionally drained of absolutely everything they had.

Estella looked at him across the small gap of empty air.

Her violet eyes were wide, exhausted, and remarkably clear. The dark corruption was completely gone, purged from her system by the violent emotional release.

But a final, residual spark of cosmic energy unexpectedly flared in her palm. It was a desperate, building solar blast born of pure, lingering combat reflex rather than genuine malice.

Draven did not raise a kinetic shield. He did not prepare to block the strike. He simply drifted forward.

As she raised her hand to fire the blast, Draven used a gentle, microscopic vector manipulation to guide her wrist outward. He redirected the blinding solar flare harmlessly over his left shoulder, letting the bright light shoot off into the open night sky.

In the exact same, fluid motion, he pulled her completely against his chest.

He kissed her.

It was vigorous, hard, and entirely unplanned. It was the desperate, messy collision of two people who had just survived the end of their own personal world.

It carried all the fear, the guilt, and the unspoken devotion he had harbored for months. He held her face with both hands, refusing to let her slip away into the dark ever again.

The kiss held firmly in the freezing air.

For one long, perfect second, there was pure, unbroken quiet in the roaring sky. They simply existed in the space between the clouds, anchored entirely by each other.

Estella’s rigid posture melted. She surrendered completely into his arms, kissing him back with a fierce, profound desperation.

Then, her exhausted brain finally processed the reality of what was actually happening.

Her violet eyes snapped comically wide open. The sheer, overwhelming shock of the romantic gesture registered in her hollow core.

POOF.

A secondary, much smaller solar flare spontaneously erupted all around them.

It was not a violent explosion. It was not a blast of corrupted dark matter. It was a startled, involuntary burst of warm, glowing white-gold starlight.

The sudden flash illuminated the clouds like a camera bulb, a pure, magical reaction to a completely overloaded emotional circuit.

The release valve had finally blown, carrying away the last remnants of the war’s heavy tension.

They separated slightly, gasping for breath in the thin air. Estella’s face was burning a brilliant, vivid crimson.

Draven kept his arms wrapped securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. They held each other suspended in the night sky by nothing but his fading, persistent power. They were exhausted, battered, and finally, perfectly still.
