Chapter 294: What the Sky Cannot Hold (1)
Draven held her tightly against his chest. The violent, swirling nebula of dark cosmic energy whipped aggressively against his black coat.
He expected the physical contact to anchor her. He expected the familiar warmth to pull her back from the edge of the void. He was wrong. The safety of his embrace did not calm the storm. It acted as the final, devastating trigger for the collapse.
For weeks, Estella had been locked out in the cold. She had been forced to endure a heavy, suffocating silence while the boy she loved fought a war without her. Now, held securely against the chest of the boy who had carried her out of the Cult’s underground prison, the massive dam inside her mind finally burst.
She felt the silver ring on her left hand pressing hard against his jacket. It was the ring he had given her in the hospital room, accompanied by a vow to always be her shield. The memory of that promise twisted like a rusted blade in her gut.
Estella did not melt into his arms. She broke.
She shoved her hands violently against his chest, screaming as thick, hot tears streamed down her pale face. The raw, unfiltered agony she had been holding back since she read the Vanguard document poured out of her all at once. The file was no longer the issue. The betrayal ran infinitely deeper than a piece of paper.
Estella pushed him backward, putting distance between them.
The white-gold starlight of her aura sputtered and died, replaced entirely by a violent, weeping darkness. She looked into his pitch-black eyes, searching for the monster the document described.
"Was any of it real?" Estella shrieked. Her voice tore through the heavy air, ragged and broken.
Draven stood perfectly still, his back against the shattered remnants of his oak desk.
"Answer me!" she demanded, stepping forward. "The night in the hallway... before you went to fight Neville. You kissed me back. You told me you were clearing obstacles so the people you cared about could survive."
She pointed a trembling finger at his chest.
"Was that just management?" Estella asked, the accusation dripping with pure heartbreak. "Did you calculate that kiss? Did you look at your ledger and decide that holding my hand would increase my loyalty by ten percent? Am I just an asset you were polishing for the battlefield?"
She accused him of the cruelest sin imaginable. She accused him of viewing her love as nothing more than a biological mechanism to be exploited.
She realized that every smile, every soft word, and every gentle touch over the past few months might have been a carefully orchestrated performance designed to forge her into a living bomb.
Draven did not answer her immediately. His silence was the spark that finally ignited the powder keg.
The crushing grief inside Estella mutated instantly into pure, blinding rage. The Astral-Collapse flared back to life with ten times the intensity of its initial spark.
The white-gold starlight was completely swallowed by deep purples and aggressive, swirling blacks. The air in the room grew unspeakably heavy. The localized gravitational pressure skyrocketed as her corrupted mana core began to violently vent its unstable energy.
CRACK.
The heavy stone walls of the dormitory began to buckle under the sheer magical strain. The wooden floorboards splintered and turned to fine dust beneath her boots. Books, glass, and metal objects lifted off the ground, floating aimlessly in the crushing anti-gravity field generated by her fury.
The room genuinely could not contain the expanding void. She was not just crying anymore. She was detonating. If the Astral-Collapse reached its final stage inside this building, the resulting cosmic explosion would vaporize the entire Academy wing and everyone sleeping inside it.
Draven recognized the catastrophic physical limits of the stone room.
He made the call instantly.
[Vector Manipulation]
He did not attempt to suppress her magic. He did not try to shield the walls. He seized the invisible kinetic vectors surrounding both of their bodies, locking them into a singular, unified trajectory.
CRASH.
Draven pulled them violently backward. The force launched them straight through the shattered glass window of his quarters.
They shot upward like a cannonball. They soared high above the stone courtyards of Bastion Seven, tearing rapidly through the freezing night sky.
Draven pushed the vector output to its maximum limit, ripping them thousands of feet into the air to ensure the sprawling city below took zero damage from the apocalyptic storm she was about to unleash.
They breached the high cloud line. The freezing, biting wind whipped wildly around them.
Estella did not hesitate. The moment they were clear of the city, she unleashed her wrath. She thrust her hands forward, firing a massive, hyper-dense beam of corrupted cosmic energy directly at his chest.
Draven twisted his wrist. He generated a localized gravity well just inches from his body, catching the lethal beam and bending its trajectory harmlessly upward into the clouds.
The fight began in earnest thousands of feet in the air.
Estella fired volley after volley of dark starlight. Needles of purple energy sliced through the clouds. Draven danced through the chaotic barrage, utilizing precise momentum shifts to dodge, parry, and redirect her catastrophic output.
He was not trying to hurt her. He was desperately trying to bleed the excess pressure out of her core before it shattered her from the inside out.
From the ground, the late-night sentries of Bastion Seven looked up in awe. They saw two brilliant points of light clashing violently in the dark sky.
One was a swirling storm of white-gold and purple, the other a sleek, darting shadow of pure kinetic force. It looked like a beautiful, terrifying meteor shower, completely masking the profound heartbreak fueling the storm.
CLANG.
Draven caught her wrist mid-air. He generated a massive, zero-gravity pocket around them, halting their chaotic flight and forcing them to hover face-to-face in the freezing wind.
"Let me go!" Estella screamed, thrashing against his grip. "Tell me the truth!"
Draven looked into her furious violet eyes. He delivered the hardest, ugliest truth of his entire life.
"The plan came first," Draven shouted over the roaring wind.
Estella stopped thrashing. The words hit her like physical stones.
"You were a high-value asset," Draven confessed, refusing to soften the reality. "I found you in that Cult basement because I knew the Star of Ruin was a weapon I needed to win this war. I fed you, I protected you, and I kept you close because you were the most powerful piece on the board."
He did not say he had always loved her. He did not offer a clean, romantic lie.
"But it changed," Draven continued, his voice cracking slightly under the immense emotional strain. "I kept telling myself it was just a strategy. I told myself I was managing a variable to keep the timeline stable. But somewhere along the line, the lie vanished."
Draven tightened his grip on her wrist.
"I lost the ability to tell the difference between the manipulation and the reality," Draven admitted openly. "I looked at you, and I did not see a weapon anymore. I just saw you. And it terrified me."
He looked away, staring into the dark clouds.
"Caring about you frightened me more than losing the war ever did," Draven whispered. "So I pushed you away. I isolated you. Because I thought it was the only way to keep the plan intact."
Estella violently ripped her arm out of his grasp.
The answer was not clean enough. It was a messy, bleeding, deeply human compromise, and her shattered heart simply could not process it.
"If you could not tell the difference, how am I supposed to?!" Estella cried out.
She summoned a massive, spinning array of dark cosmic needles around her floating form. The corrupted starlight hummed with lethal intent.
