Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking
Chapter 239: Why Must Others Bear All the Bad Consequences?
Caleb Lowell was just about to make things clear when his phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the caller ID and decided to answer.
"Cousin, we’re in trouble! You have to come save us, quick!" Pauline Shaw yelled the moment the call connected.
Caleb Lowell’s brow furrowed. He could faintly hear a banging sound from the other end. "What’s wrong? What happened?"
"We’re in trouble! A group of people are here with an IOU, demanding money from Luna! They’ve blocked us in our car!"
Caleb Lowell’s expression instantly soured. "How much do they want?"
"Three million in cash! They won’t let us leave unless we pay!" Pauline was frantic.
The Shaw Family was short on cash right now. She had already sold off much of her own jewelry to cover their shortfalls and simply couldn’t produce that much cash to help Luna Morgan.
To make matters worse, she couldn’t get ahold of Gordon Dawson, and with no other options, she had resorted to calling her cousin.
The men were menacing, clutching the IOU written by Luna Morgan, and they weren’t intimidated in the least.
It never rains but it pours. Just as this was happening, Mr. Shaw had also sent people to harass her. In her attempt to shake them, Pauline Shaw had driven into a dead-end alley and was now trapped.
BANG! BANG! BANG! A series of violent blows suddenly struck the windshield.
Pauline looked up at the man sprawled across the hood, her voice trembling involuntarily. "Cousin, they’re climbing onto the car..."
With one hand on the steering wheel, an idea popped into her head. She desperately wanted to just slam on the gas.
Caleb heard the banging and, at the same time, the sound of an engine that hadn’t been turned off.
"Pauline, listen to me. Turn off the engine right now. Stay put, don’t open the car doors, and wait for me." Caleb made an instant decision.
Jasper Sterling was standing close by, and Pauline’s voice was high-pitched, so he overheard most of the conversation and immediately understood what was happening.
The two ladies had been cornered in their car by debt collectors and were likely quite terrified.
’Still, three million doesn’t seem like a debt Miss Morgan would incur. If I’m not mistaken, I’m probably the one who caused this mess.’
When the elder sister-in-law of the Lucas Family had come looking for them the other day, he was the one who revealed that Luna Morgan was the sponsor.
Jasper Sterling feigned ignorance. "President Lowell, you seem to be in a hurry. What’s the matter? Have you decided against insisting on taking my dear senior away today?"
Caleb’s expression was grim. He wanted to, but the situation wouldn’t allow it.
Luna Morgan had just been discharged from the hospital. Her wounds had only just begun to heal, and she couldn’t withstand any pushing or shoving.
Those debt collectors were most likely creditors that the Morgan family’s parents had provoked. Back then, Luna Morgan had suffered a great deal, trying to study, take care of Jane Lancaster at the hospital, and hide from debt collectors all at once.
One night, she arrived at the hospital two hours late. He had been sarcastic and mocking back then, thinking, ’You said you’d come massage Jane every day. It’s only been a short while, and you can’t even stick to it because of a little rain?’
Luna Morgan’s face was deathly pale at the time, but she didn’t offer a single word of explanation and just skillfully got to work.
It wasn’t until she finished and stood up to walk that he noticed a long trail of footprints on the floor.
At first, he thought it was rainwater, but a closer look revealed it was blood.
Luna Morgan had been cornered by the debt collectors and had cut her leg while escaping. But she was so worried about Jane Lancaster that she had rushed to the hospital without treating the wound.
She was wearing wide-leg pants and pretending nothing was wrong, not realizing the blood had soaked through to her shoes, leaving the bloody prints.
The very next day, Caleb Lowell found those debt collectors, paid off all of Luna Morgan’s debts for her, and gave the men a harsh lesson, finally resolving the matter.
But in the end, Luna Morgan was left with a scar on her leg. When she occasionally wore a skirt, the ugly mark was faintly visible.
He was worried that Pauline Shaw, in her unstable state, would do something foolish like drive into them. And to stop Pauline, Luna Morgan would inevitably get out of the car herself...
At least for now, Jane Lancaster was safe with Jasper Sterling. She looked well, too—not at all like someone who had just fainted, as Jasper had claimed.
So, the part about her being unconscious for hours was most likely an exaggeration on Jasper’s part, designed to make him panic and lose his composure.
Having made his decision, Caleb Lowell immediately turned and walked out, not bothering to engage with Jasper Sterling’s passive-aggressive taunts.
Jasper Sterling called out, "But I’d advise President Lowell to be cautious about handing over that three million. Who knows if it’s extortion? I suggest you call the police."
Caleb walked straight out without pausing for a second. He’d have to be a fool to believe a word Jasper said.
Jasper Sterling watched him leave with a smile.
’I offer a rare piece of sincere advice, and of course, he doesn’t take it seriously.’
Just as Jasper turned around, he saw Jane Lancaster walk out again, looking a little anxious. "Where’s Caleb?"
The gentle, elegant smile on the young man’s face almost faltered. "Senior, what are you looking for him for?"
’Could it be? Did she choose Caleb Lowell again?’
’If that’s really the case, I should have just joined the fray and beaten Caleb to a pulp. Let’s see if he can still seduce anyone then.’
He had always been a deep thinker. After a few thoughts flashed through his mind, he decisively grabbed Jane Lancaster’s wrist, pulled her into his arms, and held her fast, giving her no chance to leave.
"Are you sure you want him to see us like this?" he asked, looking down at her, a dark undercurrent swirling in his eyes.
Jane Lancaster looked up at him. "Are you jealous?"
Jasper Sterling came to his senses. He had probably been an idiot. How could Jane Lancaster possibly fall for a muddle-headed fool like Caleb Lowell?
He nonchalantly averted his gaze. "No."
Jane looked at his slightly flushed earlobes. "..."
’He obviously is, but he’s too stubborn to admit it.’
"...Fine, I am," Jasper admitted, his gaze shifting back to her.
His eyes were focused and gentle. This time, it was Jane Lancaster who looked away. "Let go of me first."
She was having a hard time resisting!
’How is he so good at flirting! With those eyes, he could make a dog feel cherished!’
Jasper Sterling: "..."
’What does she mean, I could make a dog feel cherished? I’m only like this with her.’
"You found out that Pauline Shaw and Luna Morgan are trapped in their car by debt collectors?" He loosened his hold on her, but then, unwilling to let go completely, he took her hand and intertwined their fingers.
Jane Lancaster nodded. Pauline Shaw had just sent her a text. She wasn’t sure if it was a mistake or a deliberate test, but the message was retracted a few minutes later anyway.
"Caleb has already gone to help, so you don’t need to worry, Senior."
Jane thought for a moment. "You’re overthinking it. I just want to watch the show."
’How can there be so many coincidences? We just leaked that Luna Morgan was the sponsor, and in the blink of an eye, she’s being chased for a three-million-dollar debt.’
’The people from the Lucas Family are truly insatiable. How shameless of them to demand so much money.’
’They’re probably going to fail this time. Caleb Lowell doesn’t show mercy. I’d quite like to go and kick them while they’re down.’
Jasper smiled. "If you’re worried, just say you’re worried, Senior. No need to pretend you just want to watch the show. Since you want to go, let’s go take a look."
He also wanted to take this opportunity to clarify a few things. People shouldn’t think they could just sling mud at Jane Lancaster for everything.
Luna Morgan’s kindness might not be hypocrisy, but it invited a lot of trouble, implicated others, and even led to someone’s death.
’She can play the living Bodhisattva if she wants, but on what grounds should others have to bear all the negative consequences?’
