Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking
Chapter 238: You Two Getting Along Is Better Than Anything
Early the next morning, Jane Lancaster awoke to the faint sound of birds chirping.
She pushed open the window, and a cool morning breeze blew in. The birdsong grew clearer, a crimson blush colored the horizon, and the entire mountain seemed to be gradually awakening.
However, this tranquility was soon shattered by a noisy disturbance.
Listening to the commotion at the courtyard gate, Jane Lancaster frowned. It sounded like two groups had clashed and started fighting. She put on a jacket and went downstairs.
She spotted Jasper Sterling’s figure from a distance and quickened her pace toward him.
"What are you all doing?" Looking up at the newcomer, Jane Lancaster suddenly froze.
Caleb Lowell was covered in dust from his journey, but that wasn’t the point. The point was, he had always been meticulous about his image, forever impeccably dressed in a suit.
Now, however, his black suit was a wrinkled mess, stained with dirt.
The bodyguards on both sides were glaring at each other, and some had bruises on their faces. They had clearly been in a fight.
When Caleb Lowell saw Jane Lancaster, he lost some of his composure and cried out, "Jay, so you’re really okay!"
Jasper Sterling said calmly, "I already told you she was fine."
He paused, then explained to Jane Lancaster, "When you fainted, I had someone send a message to Caleb Lowell."
He hadn’t told Caleb Lowell because the man was Jane Lancaster’s former fiancé, and it certainly wasn’t out of generosity.
The order his bodyguards had received was to capture Caleb Lowell at all costs the moment he appeared.
Jasper Sterling had even prepared a knife. Back then, he had genuinely intended to kill, not minding if he had to eliminate the so-called "male protagonist" to test the reactions of the lofty gods above.
Because the order was never rescinded, the moment Caleb Lowell appeared at the sanatorium gate this morning, several bodyguards pounced, starting a brawl with his entourage.
Jasper Sterling’s timely arrival was the only thing that prevented the situation from escalating.
But Caleb Lowell had clearly misunderstood, immediately and self-righteously declaring that he was taking Jane Lancaster away.
Jasper Sterling lowered his gaze and said softly, "But President Lowell’s men seem a bit aggressive. They tried to force their way in the moment they arrived. It scared my bodyguards into thinking a second Jean Hughes had shown up."
Caleb Lowell suppressed his anger and explained, "We didn’t start it. Your men attacked first."
Jasper Sterling’s tone was indifferent. "Is that so? I suppose it must be, then."
Caleb Lowell was about to explode. ’What does he mean, "suppose it must be"? He’s making it sound like I’m lying!’
He had rushed back overnight after getting the news and had come here first thing in the morning with sincere intentions, only to be inexplicably attacked.
And if that wasn’t enough, the other man was now twisting the truth, pinning all the blame on him!
He was furious. If this man hadn’t been the one to notify him in the first place, he would have suspected this was all a deliberate setup.
Jane Lancaster had also figured out what was going on. She glanced at Jasper Sterling.
’Wow, you’re really playing the innocent victim here, aren’t you?’
Caleb Lowell’s heart leaped with joy. ’It seems Jane is still on my side. Jasper’s attempt to frame me is useless.’
"Thank you for taking care of Jay yesterday, and thank you for notifying me so promptly. I will pay a formal visit to thank you properly another day."
Caleb Lowell paused after speaking, then turned to Jane Lancaster with a gentle expression. "Jay, let’s go home."
A murderous glint appeared in Jasper Sterling’s smile. "..."
’Looks like the beating he got was too light,’ he thought. ’If I’d known, I wouldn’t have come out to stop it so soon.’
Jane Lancaster took two steps back, avoiding his outstretched hand. "That won’t be necessary."
Caleb Lowell frowned, his voice growing even gentler. "You don’t want to go home right now? That’s fine. You can come to my place, or I’ll arrange a separate house for you."
He guessed that the online rumors had strained her relationship with her brother, which was why she was being so guarded.
Jasper Sterling shot Caleb Lowell a faint, mocking smile. He was very tempted to ask just where Caleb planned on taking her.
Unexpectedly, it was Jane Lancaster who asked first. "Where exactly is ’your place’? The Lowell family villa, or the river-view penthouse?"
Caleb Lowell was caught completely off guard.
Jane Lancaster gave him a knowing look.
’So, what you mean is, both of those places are inconvenient? Ah, I get it now.’
Jasper Sterling chuckled softly and lowered his gaze. He knew she must have figured it out long ago.
According to the plot, she should have already known about the river-view penthouse. It was where Luna Morgan had once been kept as a hidden mistress.
As for the Lowell family villa, that was because Caleb Lowell had brought the pregnant Mrs. Everett there to look after her during her pregnancy.
Mrs. Everett had been abusing poppy husks, and Clayton Lowell had become addicted. To make matters worse, according to his doctor’s diagnosis, Clayton was now most likely unable to have any more children.
Therefore, even though Clayton Lowell was clamoring to have the child aborted and make Mrs. Everett rot in prison, Caleb Lowell still got her out and settled her in his own villa.
However, Caleb Lowell rarely returned to the villa after that, as he didn’t want to face Mrs. Everett.
The incident had made him see Mrs. Everett’s schemes for what they were, and he couldn’t bear to face her "concern," which was clearly tainted by self-interest.
Perhaps because so much had happened recently, and because he had been traveling for work and hadn’t been home, he had momentarily forgotten all about the Mrs. Everett situation.
"Since it’s inconvenient, Young Master Lowell should see himself out," Jasper Sterling said, bluntly telling him to leave.
Caleb Lowell took a deep breath. He admitted he hadn’t thought this through, but he absolutely could not let Jane Lancaster live out here all by herself.
"Come home with me!" He stepped forward and grabbed Jane Lancaster’s wrist. "Jay, your father entrusted me to take good care of you before he went abroad. I can’t leave you here!"
Jasper Sterling grabbed Caleb Lowell’s shoulder, his eyes turning cold. "Let her go!"
Caleb Lowell ignored him, looking directly at Jane Lancaster with utter seriousness. "You’ll be the only one at the house. No one will bother you."
He had already decided to send Mrs. Everett away immediately. He wouldn’t let her show her face in front of Jane Lancaster again.
Jane Lancaster said, "Okay."
The moment the word left her lips, she felt Jasper Sterling’s gaze fall upon her.
It was like a tranquil lake suddenly whipped into a terrifying, violent storm.
A look of immense relief washed over Caleb Lowell’s face. He tightened his grip on Jane Lancaster’s hand like a victor and asked, "Are you hungry? I’ll take you to get breakfast."
Jane Lancaster’s voice was gentle. "But Zion, you’re hurting me."
Caleb Lowell froze, and his grip loosened. Jane Lancaster immediately snatched her hand back and turned to leave.
’Seriously, I’m not getting into a "battle" with you two here. Why don’t you two just get together and live happily ever after? That’d be better than anything.’
Caleb Lowell grew anxious. "Jay!"
He tried to follow, but Jasper Sterling’s hand, still clamped on his shoulder, held him back.
"Why must you make things difficult, President Lowell?" Jasper Sterling asked. He waited until Jane Lancaster was a good distance away before finally releasing his hand.
Only then did Caleb Lowell feel the sharp, stabbing pain in his shoulder. The other man’s grip had been so tight it felt like he had been trying to crush his bone.
"I have to take her with me today!" he said, looking coldly at Jasper Sterling. "Do what you will to me, but I’m warning you—don’t you dare get any ideas about her!"
The two of them were mortal enemies, so it was no surprise that Jasper Sterling would oppose him. But using Jane Lancaster—that crossed a line.
Jasper Sterling gave him a strange look. "And what is it you think I want to do to her?"
’Aren’t you just trying to steal my woman, to undermine me as a way to get back at me?’
