Chapter 785: Chapter 673: Revelation of the Lord

"Would the poor who have gained power silence the poor? So, I’ve now gained power as well, but I... no, I definitely won’t become that kind of person!"

Chen Fengrui did not argue with his father’s words any further, only silently swearing to himself.

Seeing that his son seemed convinced by him and finally obediently lowered his head and ate his meal.

The middle-aged man no longer continued this heavy topic and instead instructed:

"After all, the Lower City now is a bit better than in your grandfather’s time; at least everyone can register as a citizen.

Today, you go and register quickly, then report to the Executive Government. Your dad has asked your third uncle to pull some strings to get you a temporary job there."

Chen Fengrui paused his congee-drinking motion, and a surge of rage flared up inside him, prompting a return to his earlier displeased attitude:

"Third uncle? Hah—, he’s just a gatekeeping guard at the Executive Government; what connections could he possibly have? Tell me, how much money did he take from our family this time..."

"Shut up!"

The middle-aged man growled, his temple veins bulging,

"That’s your blood uncle; would he really cheat our family? Besides, you understand nothing. Being a security guard at the Executive Government is not the same as being with us.

I’ve asked around; there was a temp worker in the mailroom who accidentally got electrocuted and died on the way home on a rainy day. That created an opening.

Your uncle spent money and asked around to squeeze your name in there, and even so, you’ll have to compete with two other people. Only one will make it.

You... better do your best and perform well to secure a permanent spot, or else..."

The man’s voice lowered, weary:

"Or else, we can’t afford any more for you to mess around, and you’ll really have to... end up burning corpses at the incineration plant or scavenging the garbage mountains at sanitation.

People don’t live long in those places..."

The middle-aged man rambled on, leaving Chen Fengrui utterly irritated.

The annoyance was not entirely directed at his father’s cowardice, but more at the Upper City, the Executive Government, and this damn world.

If he had a choice, he definitely wouldn’t want to work for the Executive Government.

He considers himself to have a fairly upright worldview, seeing the injustice toward the Lower City people as caused by the Executive Government; working for them is aiding and abetting the evil.

He didn’t want to!

At that very moment, his mouth suddenly froze, and the refusal that was ready to burst out was halted.

A cold, authoritative voice penetrated his mind—It was the voice of the "Master," the guidance from the "Master."

"Agree to him, infiltrate the Executive Government!"

The great "Master" not only granted him power for free but also bestowed upon him a revelation of wisdom.

This revelation, to him, was akin to a divine decree.

Chen Fengrui was dumbstruck, his pupils momentarily enlarged and unfocused.

A few seconds later, an overwhelming joy nearly spilled over his usual sarcasm and indifference as he hastily bowed his head, hiding the tumultuous wave within him under the guise of drinking congee.

He took a deep breath, forcing his racing heart to calm, then put down the bowl and chopsticks, lifted his head, his expression transforming into an unusually serious demeanour with an unprecedented gravity:

"Dad, don’t worry. I’ll get the job permanently and stay with the Executive Government."

The middle-aged man had prepared a speech to properly educate his son, but unexpectedly his son suddenly became so...compliant?

Listening to his son’s ambitious words, he ought to have been relieved, yet a faint unease surfaced within him.

Was it his lectures that finally made his son come around?

He opened his mouth, eventually forcing out a dry statement:

"It’s good you understand. As long as you can stay in the Executive Government building, you’ll be different from others."

Chen Fengrui nodded with agreement:

"Yes, I’m different from others now!"

He quickly finished the remaining congee in his bowl, casually wiped his mouth with his sleeve, and stood up abruptly:

"I’ll go register now, then head directly to the Executive Government to find my third uncle."

His movement was so quick that it almost knocked over the chair.

He grabbed the worn-out coat draped over the chair back and hurried towards the door, his steps so light they were nearly bouncing.

To Chen Fengrui, the moment the "Master" delivered the oracle, the entire world turned upside down.

Before the oracle, working for the Executive Government was willingly falling from grace, aiding in wickedness, a pathetic compromise with this rotten world.

But with the oracle, it became... fulfilling an order to infiltrate the enemy ranks.

Indeed, among the 44 Deputies, Chen Fengrui might not be the strongest but was certainly the one with the most upright worldview, with a deeply rooted sense of mission.

Perhaps naive, perhaps superficial...but he truly wanted to accomplish something great.

Chen Fengrui was a genuine born rebel.

The great Feng Mu never expected that among his Deputies lay hidden a seed of revolution.

Revolution is awesome!

Isn’t revolution just humanity’s self-cleaning process?

...

Chen Fengrui strode briskly down the crowded, noisy street.

The air was an acrid mix of burning low-quality energy, greasy aromas wafting from food stalls, mingled with the sweaty, tired odour of countless people.

This was the everyday air of the Lower City, murky and heavy, having nothing to do with the "sweet" air advertised.

The streets were lined with densely packed, makeshift shanties and old buildings, various pipes and cables weaving through exterior walls like exposed veins and nerves, leaking unknown coloured liquids at many junctions, forming suspicious puddles on the ground.

Yet, none of this filthy environment could diminish the almost overwhelming joy surging inside Chen Fengrui.

"Master, the Master has responded to me!"

This thought echoed wildly in his mind, like the most inspiring war drum, making his heart race and blood boil.

He restrained himself from shouting in the street, expressing it instead through fervent internal declarations:

"Master! I comply with your commands! I shall infiltrate the Executive Government and won’t disappoint your expectations!"

Semi-possessed in Chen Fengrui’s consciousness, Feng Mu listened somewhat helplessly to the incessant, breathless declarations of loyalty.

"Saying it once is enough... I’m not deaf; there’s no need to repeat it over and over,"

he muttered to himself.

But he didn’t stop this enthusiasm.

Probably... this is the "Saint" trait of inherent fanaticism, right?

It’s pretty good.

After all, from Feng Mu’s perspective, he had only bestowed a tiny amount of power for free and done nothing more.

Yet the recipient was already blindly and fervently devoted to him, making the return on this investment so high that Feng Mu himself felt a bit... embarrassed.

The key was now essentially semi-possessed, sensing every emotional fluctuation of the other party, perceiving an unmatched loyalty and a strong will to die for him.

By comparison, this individual’s level of loyalty was akin to that of Guan Chong.

Utterly absurd.

Guan Chong, after all, was often by his side, constantly influenced by him, but what was this person’s reason?

He couldn’t fathom it.

Feng Mu could only attribute it to the "Saint"’s special constitution, naturally inclined to be influenced by the "Master".

No longer bothering to ponder over this issue, Feng Mu composed himself, responding in a fitting detached and transcendent tone for a "Master", within Chen Fengrui’s tumultuous sea of consciousness:

"It is not I asking you to infiltrate, but it is the answer you seek, the path you pursue, that lies there."

Upon hearing this, Chen Fengrui’s face instantly flushed, as if receiving profound encouragement and enlightenment.

He shouted back with even greater fervour in his heart:

"I understand entirely! The Master’s intent is clear to me! The Master doesn’t need me to do anything; the Master is merely enlightening me."

Feng Mu: "..."

Was that what I meant?

Well, why not!

Feng Mu found Chen Fengrui’s understanding and interpretation of His words... quite spot-on, aligning perfectly with what a "Master" should exude.

Hence, Feng Mu graciously accepted this interpretation and replied:

"The path lies beneath your feet. I cannot walk it for you, but I can provide you a faint light to guide you."
