Endless Debt
Chapter 1551 - 83: Days Gone By
"The Dawn War, a distant and harsh memory, almost took over my entire childhood," Olivia’s voice shifted, and she asked, "Did Serey ever tell you my mother’s story?"
Bologue nodded and replied, "Serey told me about her, but it was just bits and pieces."
"Like what?"
"Back then, Serey was traveling around the world, drifting from one warm embrace to another. He thought he would always live in such indulgence until he met your mother. It seemed this wanderer truly fell in love with someone and was willing to wear shackles."
Looking back now, Bologue found this experience to have a certain romantic undertone.
If this were a movie, it would be the perfect ending, yet unfortunately, life is not a movie. It doesn’t end because a certain event concludes; the story continues to unfold until it becomes unrecognizable.
"Oh, I understand now."
From Bologue’s account, Olivia roughly understood what Serey’s story was all about.
"Did he lie to me?" Bologue asked.
"No," Olivia shook her head, "He didn’t lie about the overall outline of the story... The real conflict happened afterward, after the two of them fell in love."
After speaking, Olivia sighed tiredly, as if trying to expel every bit of air from her lungs.
Too much had happened today, one thing after another, leaving no time to react.
As the true bartender of the Undying Club, second to Sai Zong in management, Serey remained behind the door, while Sai Zong conversed with him... perhaps saying some encouraging words, hoping to motivate this despondent and timid undead to step forward.
Olivia had little hope for that.
Nesanel sat in the shadows of a corner, silent, perhaps contemplating the next decision by the Order Bureau, whether to ally with the Undying Club and perhaps muster most of the forces to wage a war sweeping through the Land of Eternal Night.
Bode busied himself behind the bar, and the others were weighed down by the serious atmosphere. Palmer, on the other hand, completely oblivious to the mood, quietly ordered a portion of fries from Bode.
To Palmer, nothing seemed wrong. A storytelling session was slowly starting, and nothing accompanied it better than a hot serving of fries.
"Aisha, Aisha Tash, that’s my mother’s name."
Olivia downed her drink in one go. She enjoyed the feeling of intoxication, where her senses dulled, making it easier to accept the past she was reluctant to face. She wasn’t sure if this trait was inherited from Serey.
"Continuing with your story, Serey and my mother fell in love, adventured together, traveled across the world, and as time went by, they kept playing their games with each other."
Bologue recalled, "You mean the game where she told Serey one piece of information about herself every day?"
"Yes, that boring game."
Olivia smiled helplessly, assessing her parents’ matters from her viewpoint gave her a sense of absurdity.
"I always thought Serey didn’t love my mother; he was just curious about her, like a child eager to know what’s inside a blind box, willing to spend extensive time and energy on it, after all, he’s an undead.
Mother understood what kind of guy Serey was. She devised this game to keep Serey in constant expectation, making him curious about her, thus binding him to her."
Whenever she mentioned her mother, Olivia’s face would glow with a tranquility, as if she had found a spiritual sanctuary.
"Similarly, I don’t think my mother initially loved Serey; she just found this undead quite useful. Not only could he dismiss boredom on a lonely road, but he also possessed various extraordinary powers to move mountains and fill seas for her."
Palmer raised an eyebrow, saying inappropriately, "A love master meets a love master, isn’t this a match of equals?"
Olivia rolled her eyes at Palmer. If she had just met him, she would have sternly taught him a lesson. Now, Olivia and Palmer were more or less old acquaintances, and after the subsequent battles in the Land of Secrets, she deeply realized what kind of person Palmer was.
Palmer wasn’t bad, just a bit witless.
"Quiet."
Olivia said, as she reached out to slide the plate in front of her, speared a fry, and dipped it into the ketchup on the edge of the plate.
"She lost," Bologue ignored Palmer, "from what happened later, she still lost to Serey."
"That’s normal, she was just an ordinary person, while Serey is a guy who has lived for hundreds of years. Given the difference in their lifespans, no matter how steadfast one’s mind is, how could anyone refuse a companion who stayed with them for decades?"
Olivia lamented, "She was different from Serey; she wasn’t a cold-blooded person."
Palmer used his eyes to signal Bode, who was just taking a break, to quietly turn around, ignite the stove, and fry a new batch of fries.
"They spent a period of peaceful, ordinary days, but as the years passed, Serey remained youthful while her face grew lined with wrinkles."
"The difference in lifespan," Bologue said softly, "Did she desire immortality?"
"No, how could she? She was my mother. Rather than selling her soul, she would rather die."
