Then, without waiting for Mabel Quinn to say anything more, Jeremiah May quickly turned around and left.

Beside her, Kyle Kinston closed the door to the room and said to Mabel Quinn, "Alright, you can be at ease now. Jeremiah, that kid, seems like he’ll be able to comfort our daughter to sleep well."

"It’s really difficult for the child, too," Mabel Quinn replied. At the age of 12, he was still just a kid himself, yet he had to take care of a five-year-old.

"It’s more like he’s received an enormous blessing," Kyle Kinston corrected her, "What he’s gained is our little Princess, and in the future, when he falls in love with Ivy, he’ll understand just how fortunate he really is."

However, Mabel Quinn was still worried, "How do you know he’ll definitely fall in love with Ivy? What if he doesn’t?" This was what she feared the most. After all, matters of the heart aren’t something that can be controlled.

"He will, definitely," Kyle Kinston said with certainty. In the few days they’d been together, he’d come to understand some of Jeremiah May’s nature, "Someone with Jeremiah’s type of personality, either he doesn’t care at all, or if he does, the intensity will far exceed his expectations. Based on his current attitude towards Ivy, he’s bound to fall in love with her in the future."

The only thing Kyle was somewhat concerned about was whether someone with Jeremiah’s character would be willing to admit to loving someone? Would he be willing to accept this fate, or would he remain unable to see his true feelings clearly?

All of these, however, were still things that needed time to be proven.

When Jeremiah May returned to the room with a fairy tale book, he told five stories in total before the little one finally fell asleep. This allowed him to breathe a sigh of relief. Raising his other free hand, he felt his face, which seemed a bit warm. He never knew that coaxing a child to sleep could be so difficult.

He tucked her in, then lay down next to her. Turning off the light, darkness descended upon the room. Even though he closed his eyes, he still didn’t feel sleepy.

Tonight, so much seemed to have happened, leaving him with an inability to fully process it all.

He had once thought that perhaps he might fall in love with someone in his life, but also felt that loving someone held no real meaning.

Like how Dad loved Mom, but in the end, died alongside her. Uncle loved Lady Li, yet only watched over her quietly from a distance, continually experiencing the pain of unrequited love.

If that’s the case, then wouldn’t it be better to live a life without love?

But today, he was told the little one liked him and it was the type of liking that meant being together for a lifetime.

Even if she might not understand the meaning of that liking now, her body had already given the answer.

As for him, upon hearing it, he felt only surprise and strangeness, but no rejection or aversion.

If he really were to spend a lifetime with this little one... Just as he was thinking about it, he suddenly felt the small body beside him move, curling over towards him, snugly nestling into his arms until she seemed to be reassured and stopped moving.

Jeremiah May’s eyelashes lightly trembled as he slowly opened his eyes. After looking at the little one beside him, even though it was dim, he could still see her sleeping face in the sliver of moonlight. His eyes flickered for a long while before he slowly closed them again, letting himself drift off to sleep just like that.
