Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 150 - 142: Harm Someone, Then Save Them?
Chapter 150: Chapter 142: Harm Someone, Then Save Them?
Yu Dong quickly took out his phone and saw it was from Yan Yikai.
A trace of disappointment flashed in his eyes.
"What is it, Kai?"
"Brother Dong, you all seem so busy out there. Let me come out and help. After all... I have nothing left."
Just moments before, Yan Yikai had been watching the security footage from his home. He had watched as everyone in his family turned into zombies; they were now wandering around the house, every last one of them.
The sight brought Yan Yikai a wave of sadness, but... there was no gore. It was just a simple transformation, as if they had suddenly become sick.
Yan Yikai accepted it quickly. He knew in that moment that if Yu Dong hadn’t come for him, he would have been at home right then, torn to shreds by his own loving family.
’What Yu Dong said was true. He really is a Reincarnator!’
’In that case, I have to fight with everything I have to survive alongside Brother Dong!’
Hearing Yan Yikai’s voice, Yu Dong felt a daze come over him, as if he were seeing the Yan Yikai from his past life...
He was always the first to charge in.
Now, in this new life, he was still the same.
"Kai, we don’t need anyone else out here. There’s still danger in the cabins, so I have a mission for you... Protect everyone for me. Don’t let anything happen to our people."
"Alright, I will!"
After hanging up, Yu Dong glanced at the time. It was already 7:15.
Ten minutes had passed since the 7:05 time he had agreed upon with Xufeng.
He pressed his lips together and dialed Xufeng’s number.
RING... RING... RING... RING...
The long, unanswered ringing on the other end seemed to say that this number would never be picked up again.
After calling three times, Yu Dong couldn’t take it anymore and slammed his fist hard against the shipping container.
"Fuck!"
"Why!"
"Why didn’t even this work! Is this really a virus?"
Yu Dong’s eyes grew red. This time, he’d had the resources and a plan to save Xufeng, Ding Ming, and the others, but ultimately, he had still failed.
The lack of any news from them could only mean one thing: even in that highly controlled laboratory environment, the zombification had still happened.
It was as if the S-virus had planted a timer in everyone’s body, set to go off right at 7:00.
BANG!
A gunshot rang out from behind him.
The man who had just attacked Jing Yanwei had turned, and Wang Dingbei had put a bullet straight through his head.
The other seven injured people trembled in fear.
Yu Dong took a deep breath, forcefully suppressing the heavy feeling of powerlessness and grief in his heart, then opened the nearby A-50 warehouse.
He took out a pre-cocked Death God Repeating Crossbow.
"Let me do it. Don’t waste bullets..."
There were exactly seven Crossbow Arrows in the magazine.
Yu Dong aimed his crossbow at the seven remaining people. They felt their blood run cold.
"Don’t move. If you move, you die. If you stay still and don’t turn into a zombie within ten minutes, you should be fine. We’ll bandage your wounds and help you survive."
Yu Dong’s voice was so calm it was rigid; he was suppressing extreme grief.
’Even after being reborn, I still couldn’t change Xufeng and Ding Ming’s fate...’
Just then, one of the injured women’s heads turned stiffly. Suddenly, blood began to pour from her nose... DRIP... DRIP...
THWACK!
A short Crossbow Arrow pierced the back of her head, and the woman fell silent.
Yu Dong pulled the special lever arm with both hands, cocking the crossbow in a swift three seconds before aiming at the remaining six people.
Wang Dingbei stared in surprise at the compound repeating crossbow in Yu Dong’s hands.
"You actually managed to get your hands on one of these..."
’This thing is highly illegal!’
Crossbows were already contraband, let alone a repeating one... In terms of killing power, it was no worse than a handgun.
That last shot was proof enough of its power.
But more than the crossbow itself, Wang Dingbei was astonished by how skillfully Yu Dong handled it. Even if this weapon was relatively easy to use, the way he held it steady, aimed true, and had the confidence to kill with a single shot... that wasn’t something you could learn in a day or two.
’Yu Dong has definitely seen real combat!’
Wang Dingbei then recalled what Yu Dong had said... ’A Reincarnator?’
Wang Dingbei thought it sounded absurd, but Yu Dong was definitely no ordinary college student. His combat prowess was off the charts!
As Wang Dingbei sized up Yu Dong’s form with the crossbow, he and his men kept a close eye on the remaining 64 seemingly uninjured people, ready for any unexpected incidents.
「Ten minutes later...」
In total, Yu Dong had fired five Crossbow Arrows, killing five people who had turned into zombies.
Including the one shot by Officer Wang, a total of six of the eight injured people had turned into zombies.
Although the two remaining people were also bleeding, their injuries hadn’t actually been caused by zombie bites or scratches.
Yu Dong put away his Death God Repeating Crossbow, retrieved the Crossbow Arrows from the back of the five corpses’ heads, and called out to the two survivors:
"Congratulations on surviving. Get up."
Instantly, the two of them slumped to the ground, gasping for breath and drenched in sweat.
’That was too close...’
They hadn’t even known for sure if they’d been scratched by a zombie or not; they could only wait for the outcome.
Based on Yu Dong’s experience, these kinds of direct wounds led to a rapid transformation. If you didn’t turn within ten minutes, you were in the clear.
Of the remaining 64 people Officer Wang was watching, one person with a hidden wound turned into a zombie and was killed on the spot by the officer. The other 63 all survived.
"This time, we saved a total of 65 people... That’s pretty good."
Yu Dong was quite satisfied with this number.
Before the outbreak, he had seen about a thousand people gathered outside the port. Based on his past experience, only about a hundred of them would have normally survived without turning into zombies.
For 65 people to have survived in such a dense crowd was nothing short of a miracle.
After all, in his past life, it had taken Officer Wang three months just to gather 100 survivors.
And now, right at the start of the apocalypse, not even counting his own team, he had already saved 65 people.
If he included his own team, along with Officer Wang, Sun Shan, and the others, that number grew.
Right now, their group totaled 91 people.
And that wasn’t even counting the engineers and sailors who had been specifically left behind on the ship.
There were over a hundred people there, too. He had no idea how many of them would ultimately make it.
Yu Dong hoped as many of them as possible would survive... enough to keep the cruise ship operational.
Seeing Yu Dong and Officer Wang’s group lower their weapons, the 65 survivors finally dared to speak.
"Ow... ow, ow, ow, I think I got scratched while I was running."
"Some bastard shoved me, and I fell right at a zombie’s feet. Scared the hell out of me..."
The two injured survivors cried out in pain.
Fire Chief Liu Hao immediately pulled a roll of tape from his pocket.
"Here, let’s get them bandaged up."
Three firefighters used some relatively clean scraps of clothing to tie off the wounds, making simple bandages to stop the bleeding for the two of them.
The other survivors, still in shock, began to talk amongst themselves. Those who found people they knew even hugged each other and started to cry.
"Thank God someone was telling us what to do, otherwise I’d definitely be dead."
"Thank you, officers, and the... the professor with the megaphone! Thank you!"
"Did you see those zombies? They suddenly went all... GACK... GACK... GACK... like that. Scared me to death. I don’t even know how I got over here. My mind went numb; I just heard the megaphone and jumped."
"It’s a good thing the bomb drew the zombies away. Otherwise, I would have been completely surrounded. I couldn’t even move..."
The survivors instinctively huddled together for comfort, talking with strangers about what had just transpired.
Just then, a woman in the crowd spoke up, her tone dripping with sarcasm:
"If someone hadn’t made such a huge scene over here, we’d all still be safe in our homes, and none of this would have happened. Luring people into danger and then ’saving’ them... Hmph."
As soon as she said this, the expressions in some of the survivors’ eyes changed subtly...
After all, many of them weren’t supposed to be here at all. They should have been at home, or in their guest houses or hotels. They had only come over because they were drawn in by all the commotion.
If they had stayed home, wouldn’t they have been better off than this?
The way several people looked at Yu Dong began to turn hostile.
