Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 149 - 141: Burning the Horde of Corpses, Taking Control of the Situation
Chapter 149: Chapter 141: Burning the Horde of Corpses, Taking Control of the Situation
After a brief escape window, those with a strong will to survive had already made it into A Port.
Those who didn’t jump in time, who reacted too slowly, who tripped... all became food for the zombies, their flesh torn apart.
The thick stench of blood blanketed the entire port. The air grew viscous, and every breath carried the scent of their own kind. An irrepressible wave of nausea rose in every survivor’s throat.
Even the police officers and firefighters, who were mentally tougher than most, couldn’t hold it in. They vomited at the sight of the carnage before them.
Most of the living were vomiting, and an even more acrid smell began to spread.
A few zombies that hadn’t managed to feed yet pressed against the barricades, roaring and reaching through. They didn’t care that their bodies were being impaled on the steel spikes. Some zombies slammed their heads directly onto the spikes, which pierced through their eye sockets into their skulls, killing them on the spot.
Throngs of zombies swarmed against the 500-meter-long line of barricades, but the makeshift defensive line was relatively sturdy and holding for now.
Just then, Yu Dong ran out of the checkpoint.
"Officer Wang, Officer Jing, and... you, the fire captain! Get all survivors under control immediately! Check everyone for wounds, especially those who just got in!"
"Sun Shan, you guys come help too! Hurry!"
"All survivors, check yourselves first! If you have a wound, move to the right side for quarantine! If you don’t have any wounds, move to the left!"
"Now!!!"
Yu Dong shouted through a megaphone as he ran, with Officer Wang right behind him.
Jing Yanwei, fire captain Liu Hao, one other police officer, and two firefighters—the five surviving officials—all instinctively looked to the more authoritative Officer Wang.
"Draw your weapons! Do as he says!"
Jing Yanwei and the other male officer immediately drew their guns and aimed them at the survivors.
"Please move quickly!"
The group, having just leaped over from a horde of zombies, had no time to rest. They had to get up and move immediately. With guns pointed at them, everyone was afraid.
Besides, these were orders from police officers and firefighters; almost no one would disobey.
Dragon Country People have an innate reverence for order.
Hearing the command, Sun Shan quickly checked on his four coworkers. They had actually climbed out of a shipping container not long ago, only to immediately run back in. Their speed was second only to Jing Yanwei’s group. The zombies hadn’t fully turned yet when they made it inside, so they were all safe.
"We’ll help too!"
The ten of them immediately followed Yu Dong’s directions and began to separate the survivors.
Yu Dong and Officer Wang also ran to the front line.
Yu Dong first inspected the outer barricades and shipping containers. Seeing no issues with the defenses, he pulled out a walkie-talkie and yelled:
"Zhou, bring the incendiary bombs over!"
Behind him, Zhou dragged a large plastic crate out of the warehouse. It was filled with thick glass bottles, each with a long fuse.
Yu Dong uncapped one and took out a lighter. Before he could light it, the sound of a pistol’s safety being disengaged clicked beside him.
"Yu Dong! What are you doing! Put it down!"
Officer Wang was shocked by Yu Dong’s actions. ’There were so many people outside, including police officers from the Huangyang Port Police Station. He was just going to burn them all?’
’What kind of fucking top-tier executioner is this guy!’
’A thug!’
"Officer Wang! Those aren’t people anymore! They’ve become zombies... It’s irreversible! We have to take them out before they break through our defensive line!"
"Bullshit! They were all good people just a moment ago! How do you know they can’t be saved? Only a doctor can make that call! Put it down!"
Wang Dingbei’s mindset hadn’t yet shifted to distinguish between people and zombies.
Yu Dong sighed and pointed to a zombie that was still flailing and roaring, despite having a steel spike run through its heart.
"Officer Wang, have you ever seen a human being still full of life with their heart pierced through? They’re eating people! They’re going to eat us! You should be pointing your gun at them, not me!"
Wang Dingbei looked at his colleagues, now baring their teeth as they feasted on corpses. The police uniforms they still wore, contrasted with their frenzied actions, made Wang Dingbei’s resolve waver.
’These things... can you really still call them human?’
Just then, a section of the barricade was pushed forward a short distance. The zombies outside were still desperately trying to squeeze through.
If the barricades were breached, all the zombies would pour in!
And the seventy-odd people who had just barely managed to escape inside, including Jing Yanwei, Liu Hao, and the others, would all die.
Wang Dingbei slowly lowered his gun.
CLICK~
Yu Dong lit a Molotov cocktail and hurled it outside.
BOOM!!!
The bottle exploded over the zombies’ heads, splattering a large amount of jellied gasoline that coated their upper bodies...
Instantly, a small patch of fire erupted!
The intense heat swept over the area, forcing Yu Dong to take two steps back.
The zombies were on fire!
Many of the zombies, engulfed in flames, continued to roar and crawl forward, looking as grotesque as monsters from hell. The fire clung to them, burning fiercely!
"Such a powerful flame..."
Officer Wang glanced at Zhou Jian Country behind him, a grave look in his eyes. ’To think someone made something so dangerous in my jurisdiction. He must be an expert in chemistry.’
"And you are?"
"A chemistry teacher. Zhou Jian Country. From now on, we’re friends."
"No wonder."
Yu Dong shoved a Molotov cocktail into each of their hands. "There’ll be plenty of time for pleasantries after we deal with the zombies."
Yu Dong had already thrown the first bottle, and the sight of the zombies, still bloodthirsty and frenzied even while engulfed in flames, convinced Wang Dingbei... these things were no longer human.
He took the Molotov, copied Yu Dong’s actions—light, throw, BOOM!
The men quickly tossed the Molotovs over the barricades onto the heads of the massive zombie horde, setting that entire section of the tide of corpses ablaze!
Billowing flames rose outside, and the stench of burning human flesh filled the distorted, shimmering air.
After they had thrown them all, Yu Dong looked at Wang Dingbei.
"Officer Wang, I hope you won’t be pointing your gun at my head again in the future... I’m your friend, not your enemy. We both have the same goal."
Officer Wang’s eyes narrowed slightly. ’He recalled how Yu Dong had gone to great lengths to get him transferred to Huangyang Port. Yu Dong could have just left him behind... He really is doing everything he can to save people.’
"I’ll try."
Then, the two of them turned and ran quickly over to where Officer Jing was.
"Get on the ground now! Don’t come any closer! One more step and I’ll shoot!"
Jing Yanwei was pointing her gun at a young man with a bleeding leg.
"Help me! I’m begging you, help me! I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die! Don’t just throw me over there to die... I’ll pay you! My dad’s rich! He’ll pay anything! Don’t give up on me..."
He refused to stay on the right side and kept moving toward Jing Yanwei, putting on a pitiful act.
Jing Yanwei’s repeated warnings didn’t stop him. In fact, he was getting closer and closer...
He knew he’d been bitten by a zombie, but he refused to accept his fate. ’Who says a bite guarantees infection?!’
He felt his blood burning hot.
"My fate is my own, not decided by heaven!"
He lunged directly at Jing Yanwei, trying to snatch her gun.
BANG!
Officer Wang shot the man down, then walked over and kicked him aside.
Instantly, anyone else who had been getting ideas quickly lowered their heads and didn’t dare to move. Even those with wounds now stood obediently on the right side.
"Remember, when you have to shoot, you shoot."
Wang Dingbei grabbed Jing Yanwei’s hand and squeezed it hard.
"I know..."
Wang Dingbei took over the inspections himself. He quickly found two people hiding their wounds and dragged them to the right. When one resisted, he immediately struck them with his baton, making them cry out in pain.
His commanding presence made all the survivors fall in line.
"Total of 72 survivors. 8 are wounded, 64 have no visible injuries."
"You eight, stand apart! Hold your hands out where I can see them!"
"As for the rest of you, don’t celebrate just yet! Split into seven groups and stand over there quietly!"
Officer Wang had taken complete control of the situation. Everyone else obediently stood in their designated spots according to his instructions.
Wang Dingbei projected a convincing aura of authority that you wouldn’t find in an ordinary police officer.
Yu Dong nodded slightly.
’This is the Officer Wang I was hoping for.’
Outside, the zombies in the flames gradually fell silent. Inside, the survivors were quickly brought under the control of the police team.
Everything was going according to the script Yu Dong and his team had prepared in advance.
RING RING RING~
Yu Dong’s phone rang.
