Chapter 148: The Shadow Legion Reaches Fifteen Thousand

  • Next Chapter

The ocean surrounding the Sovereign-Class Dreadnought Vanguard-Zero was dark, silent, and thick with mist.

Two miles off the port bow, eighty-four foreign merchant vessels sat idling in long, disciplined columns along the fifty-mile demarcation line. Their navigation lights blinked red and green against the grey twilight, their auxiliary diesel engines humming as their captains waited for clearance to enter the deep channel leading to District One.

On the dreadnought’s forward deck, Chief Quartermaster Miller held his radio receiver with shaking hands, his spectacles fogged by the cold sea dampness.

"The anchorage is completely choked, Sovereign," Miller reported, his voice tight with fatigue. "The harbor masters at Pier Four have six freighters tied alongside, but there are no dock crews left to unload the timber and petroleum barges. The men in District One have been working eighteen-hour shifts without sleep."

Renan stood at the forward rail, his woolen coat open against the offshore breeze.

Inside his chest, the twin-chambered Sovereign core beat in slow, heavy cycles, radiating twenty-two thousand units of core density through his marrow.

"Victor," Renan spoke into his lapel microphone, his voice calm and unhurried.

"Listening, Sovereign," Boss Victor answered from the quayside control room in Sector Zero, the sound of clattering teletype machines and shouting dock foremen audible in the background.

"Order the merchant ships to hold their moorings at the fifty-mile marker," Renan commanded. "Tell them their cargo will be cleared before midday tomorrow."

Victor let out a rough, gravelly chuckle. "Clear eighty ships in twelve hours? Unless you have seven thousand extra dockworkers hiding under your coat, Sovereign, those Greek captains are going to sit on their hatches until next week."

"The dockworkers are not under my coat, Victor," Renan said softly, looking down into the black water beneath the dreadnought’s hull. "They are beneath my keel."

Renan raised his right hand, spreading his fingers wide over the open ocean.

[Skill Activated: Mass Abyssal Extraction] [Current Sovereign Core Density: 22,000 Units] [Target: Sunken Human and Monster Remains within Nero Trench (Depths 10 to 60 Fathoms)] [Consolidation Protocol: Tier-4 Unlimited Authority]

"Arise," Renan decreed.

The single word did not echo across the waves.

It sank like forty tons of lead directly through the salt water, striking the cold, black silt forty fathoms below where the scuttled wrecks of forty-two British and American warships lay half-buried in the seabed mud.

For five seconds, the Pacific Ocean held its breath.

Then the water beneath Vanguard-Zero began to boil with dark, liquid midnight.

RUMBLE!

A subterranean vibration shook the seabed, sending concentric shockwaves ripple-patterning across the surface.

From the dark silt, thousands of black fluid threads erupted, slicing up through forty fathoms of water like ink escaping a cracked bottle. The sunken bodies of six thousand British sailors, American damage control specialists, and mercenary divers who had drowned during the Seventh Fleet’s invasion broke through the surface of the black foam.

They did not float like corpses.

Their skin, uniform cloth, and leather boots dissolved into smooth, light-devouring obsidian armor.

Their eyes ignited with steady, subordinate argent embers as their feet settled onto the mirror-like surface of the ocean, forming tight, disciplined rank-and-file battalions that stretched across two square miles of open water.

Beside the human sailors, the sunken bones of eight hundred deep-sea trench beasts and armored sea-drakes rose from the mud, their skeletons reknitted with star-iron plates and necrotic resin.

[Extraction Audit Complete] [Extracted Units: 6,800 New Shadow Constructs] [Class Distribution: 4,200 Shadow Logistics Engineers, 1,800 Coastal Skirmishers, 800 Deep-Sea Beast Guards] [Total Sovereign Legion Active Strength: 15,000 Units]

The six thousand eight hundred newly born shadow soldiers lowered their heads in absolute, silent unison.

The heavy clatter of their gauntlets striking their breastplates sounded like a thunderstorm crashing over an iron roof, shaking the salt spray from the dreadnought’s anchor chains.

Shadow Colossus Vance stepped onto the forward deck, his forty-four-foot frame bringing the dreadnought’s bow three inches lower in the water as his horizontal visor flared with bright, approving argent light.

"Six thousand eight hundred fresh constructs, Sovereign," Vance reported, his acoustic diaphragm humming. "Four thousand of them hold technical ratings in naval engineering, crane operation, and high-voltage line maintenance. We can double the unloading capacity of Pier Four, Pier Six, and the new fuel terminals at District Three simultaneously."

Renan looked across the vast black army standing upon the water, his violet pupils reflecting the cold argent embers burning in their visors.

"Vance," Renan commanded.

"Standing by, Sovereign."

"Deploy three thousand logistics constructs to the quays in Sector Zero immediately," Renan ordered, his voice carrying the quiet, unshakeable certainty of a hegemon organizing his kingdom. "Assign two thousand to Chief Miller to complete the refit of the secondary destroyers in the trench basin. The remaining eighteen hundred will form the outer patrol line along the fifty-mile marker."

Vance bowed his massive, crested helm. "It shall be done, Sovereign."

With a single gesture from Renan’s arm, the six thousand eight hundred shadow soldiers turned in perfect unison.

Three thousand logistics constructs glided across the water toward the quays of District One like dark mist, leaping onto the concrete piers to seize the portal cranes and cargo winches alongside the exhausted human dockworkers.

Within twenty minutes, the sound of heavy electric motors and pneumatic drivers echoed across the harbor with newfound, terrifying speed.

Boss Victor’s voice came back through the lapel radio, breathless and laughing in genuine disbelief.

"Sovereign!" Victor shouted over the roar of three gantry cranes operating at maximum speed. "Three thousand shadow dockhands just took over the winches at Pier Four! They are unloading forty tons of Australian wheat every ninety seconds! The Greek captains are standing on their bridge wings taking photos!"

Renan stood at the railing, watching his shadow legion transform the peninsula into an impenetrable industrial fortress.

His total active legion count now stood at fifteen thousand units, backed by an unlimited consolidation protocol that meant no battle, no fatigue, and no loss of material could deplete his rank-and-file forces.

Chief Quartermaster Miller stepped to Renan’s side, holding an encrypted satellite receiver that was flashing a crimson alert cipher from the European underground network.

"Sovereign," Miller spoke, his tone turning grave as the industrial celebration in the harbor faded into the background. "A priority transmission just arrived from Sylas at the Parisian safehouse."

Renan turned his head slightly, his violet eyes locking onto the paper in Miller’s hand. "Speak, Miller."

"The Swiss banking consortium has officially convened an emergency summit in Zurich," Miller reported, reading the decoded lines. "They have placed a forty-billion-dollar bounty on your head and dispatched three regional European hunter guilds to seize the Alpine trade passes. Boss Victor’s global intelligence network has finalized the target map for their primary vaults."

Renan reached out, taking the paper from Miller’s hand as the cold offshore wind whipped his woolen coat behind his shoulders.

"Tell Victor to assemble the briefing room in Sector Zero," Renan said softly, his voice dropping into a quiet, deadly whisper that cut through the roar of the cranes. "It is time we stop defending our sea, and start counting their money."
