Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 56: The World Goes Dark
The colossal entity shifting deep beneath Sol Haven continued its relentless ascent. Raviah Solomon stood transfixed before the main seismic workstation, watching the pulsing red vector track upward with horrifying consistency.
A suffocating, heavy silence hung over the underground command bunker. The initial wave of earthquakes had already fractured surrounding access roads, shattered civilian communication towers, and severely destabilized the regional power grid.
Yet, whatever was carving a path through the earth beneath them belonged to an entirely different class of threat.
"Seal every subterranean access point immediately," Raviah ordered, her voice cutting sharply through the quiet room.
The chief security officer’s fingers flew across his console as he relayed the command.
"Keep Sector Seven completely isolated," she added, her gaze fixed on the subterranean schematics. "No excavation, no drilling, and absolute lockdown on the lower levels until we understand what is coming up."
General Rhyder Drakeheir stepped beside her, his expression grim as he looked at the security feed.
"Execute her orders," Rhyder commanded without hesitation.
Before the tactical officer could respond, every active screen in the command center flickered erratically.
[REGIONAL POWER FAILURE EXPANDING]
A high-ranking military intelligence officer materializing on the main holographic feed was pale and visibly shaken.
"General Drakeheir, we have lost primary electrical grid connections across multiple metropolitan sectors," the officer reported rapidly.
Rhyder’s dark eyes narrowed as he stepped closer to the display.
"Give me the extent of the blackout."
"Major cities are experiencing cascading power failures," the officer replied, his voice strained. "Civilian power plants are collapsing one after another, and regional emergency backups are being completely overwhelmed."
A series of emergency alerts began popping up across the primary diagnostic board in rapid succession.
[HOSPITAL EMERGENCY POWER ACTIVATED]
[AIRPORT OPERATIONS SUSPENDED]
[NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION NETWORK DISRUPTED]
Raviah felt a cold tightness grip her chest as she read the incoming reports.
The sequence of the collapse was accelerating far beyond the timeline she remembered from her past life. Before her rebirth, infrastructure had crumbled gradually over months, granting governments precious time to organize evacuations and establish defense perimeters.
This time, the entire civilized world was unravelling in a matter of hours.
"Expand the feed to show the main transportation corridors," Raviah requested, her tone unnaturally calm.
The technician tapped the console, expanding the regional transit map.
Major highways were glowing bright crimson, clogged with dense gridlock. Tens of thousands of vehicles sat bumper-to-bumper, trapped on narrow roads leading away from the dark urban centers.
Terrified civilians were fleeing in droves, yet there was no safe destination waiting for them.
Massive landslides had already swallowed entire stretches of mountain roads, while abandoned vehicles blocked the remaining escape routes.
Automated emergency broadcasts repeatedly instructed citizens to shelter in place, but sheer panic had rendered official orders completely meaningless.
Rhyder’s personal military communicator chimed loudly, breaking his focus.
"General!" a panicked officer called out over the secure channel.
"Report," Rhyder answered instantly.
"Three regional military outposts have gone completely silent within the last ten minutes!"
Rhyder’s jaw set like iron.
"Which outposts?"
The officer rapidly recited the base designations, each one representing a critical tactical node along the eastern border.
"Have you attempted backup radio channels?" Rhyder demanded.
"Every frequency is completely nonresponsive, sir."
Rhyder’s stoic countenance turned as hard as marble.
"Keep cycling the encrypted frequencies until you reestablish contact."
"Understood, General."
As the channel cut out, Raviah slowly scanned the glowing command room.
Sol Haven remained operational and secure. Its internal generators hummed smoothly, its independent water filtration systems were online, and the subterranean medical bays were fully functional.
The vast food reserves, crops, and livestock she had gathered over six months remained safely tucked behind heavy concrete walls.
Yet, the outside world was rapidly slipping into total dark, severing their connection to humanity.
They were becoming an isolated island in a sea of chaos.
"Restrict our external communications," Raviah said, turning to face Rhyder.
Rhyder looked at her, his brow furrowing slightly.
"A total dark outage?"
"Not completely," she clarified, stepping toward the communications array. "We maintain primary military links, but civilian transmission bandwidth will drain our power arrays unnecessarily."
She turned her sharp gaze to the communications technician on duty.
"Establish strict, scheduled transmission windows for external data," she ordered firmly. "Emergency military traffic receives absolute priority, while all nonessential outgoing civilian channels are suspended immediately."
"Understood, Doctor," the officer replied, keying in the command protocols.
"Initiate full fortress lockdown now," Raviah added.
A heavy, expectant silence fell over the command deck. The officer hesitated for a fraction of a second before slapping his palm against the master lock switch.
[FORTRESS LOCKDOWN INITIATED]
Deep hydraulic locks engaged with echoing thuds throughout the complex. Massive titanium blast doors slid into place, sealing off the underground sectors, while outer perimeter gates locked behind thick layers of reinforced steel.
Automated defense turrets along the watchtowers raised their barrels, switching to autonomous tracking modes.
For the first time since its construction, Sol Haven ceased operating as a private agricultural project. It had officially transformed into an impenetrable fortress.
Raviah stood silently as the last active military communication channel flickered on the primary screen.
A weary military operator appeared through a haze of signal noise.
"Sol Haven, this is Eastern Defense Command," the operator static-choked voice called out. "Do you copy?"
Raviah reached out, pressing the open frequency key.
"Sol Haven receiving loud and clear."
"Regional command requires your immediate status report."
"Fortress is fully operational," Raviah answered clearly. "Internal power grids are stable, water filtration systems are nominal, and medical facilities are fully prepped."
A harsh burst of electromagnetic static tore through the transmission, distorting the operator’s image.
"...Understood..." the voice cracked through the interference. "Maintain..."
"Repeat, Eastern Command, you are breaking up," Raviah urged, leaning toward the mic.
"...Maintain current position..." the operator managed before the signal warped entirely.
The transmission died with a high-pitched whine, and the monitor went completely pitch black.
Raviah stared at the blank glass display, her hand hovering over the control deck. She waited for several long seconds, hoping for a sign of life. She manually reengaged the frequency, but only dead static answered her call.
The outside world could no longer reach them.
The realization settled over her shoulders, feeling heavier and far more oppressive than the earthquake that had shaken the valley hours before.
Hours passed in a surreal blur as night settled over the isolated valley. Outside the thick, reinforced glass observation windows, the sky retained its sickly crimson hue, bathing the darkened fortress in an eerie, blood-red light.
Most of the civilian workers had been safely evacuated into the deep residential bunkers, while heavily armed security teams patrolled the high perimeter walls. Deep within the earth, the massive industrial generators maintained a low, reassuring vibration.
Inside the central command room, Raviah remained alone in the dim light.
The primary monitors were still covered in tactical maps displaying cascading regional power outages, highway gridlocks, and dead communication networks. Every fading indicator represented another piece of human civilization being erased in real time.
Raviah stood motionless before the central display, her arms wrapped tightly across her chest as she absorbed the sight. She was so deeply absorbed in the data that she failed to hear the heavy command room door slide open.
Rhyder stepped inside, his soft footfalls making almost no sound against the polished floor.
"You’re still working," he said softly, breaking the heavy silence.
Raviah did not turn around, her dark eyes remaining fixed on the flashing red maps.
"Someone has to monitor the perimeter."
Rhyder walked up beside her, his tall frame blocking out the harsh light from the side terminal.
"You’ve been standing in this spot for six hours without rest."
"I don’t have time to sleep right now," she murmured, her voice tight.
"Raviah," he called quietly, his tone devoid of its usual stern military edge.
She finally turned her head to look up at him. His dark eyes were unusually gentle, filled with a quiet understanding that caught her off guard.
"You don’t have to carry the weight of the entire world on your shoulders alone," Rhyder said softly.
Raviah’s gaze hardened slightly, a stubborn warmth rising in her chest.
"If I don’t carry it, who will?" she countered.
Rhyder closed the small gap between them, stepping directly in front of her. For a moment, he simply stared down into her tired eyes without saying a word.
Then, slowly and deliberately, he reached out and took her cold hand in his own. His broad palm was warm, solid, and reassuring against her trembling fingers.
"Then let me carry half," he whispered.
Raviah froze, her breath catching in her throat as a sudden stillness washed over her. She looked down at their joined hands, feeling the steady heat radiating from his skin.
For six agonizing months, she had planned, hoarded, and built in complete isolation, bearing the terrifying burden of the apocalypse by herself. Even after revealing her past life to him, a part of her had believed she was destined to carry the nightmare alone.
Yet Rhyder was standing right beside her. He was not standing there merely as a high-ranking general or as the fallen soldier from her memories, but as the man who had chosen to stand by her side in this life.
Her fingers slowly tightened around his, clinging to his warmth.
"Rhyder..." she breathed softly, looking back up into his dark eyes.
Before he could respond, a deafening roar tore through the night sky.
BOOM!
A colossal explosion erupted far beyond the southern mountain range, shaking the very foundation of the underground fortress. The entire command room shuddered violently, and every active monitor flickered as secondary shockwaves rattled the glass panes.
Raviah’s head snapped toward the reinforced observation windows. A massive, fiery orange mushroom cloud erupted into the night, illuminating the crimson sky with terrifying brilliance.
Rhyder instantly released her hand, his military instincts taking over as his palm dropped to his sidearm. Raviah stared at the towering column of fire rising over the southern ridge, her face turning dead pale under the flickering lights.
"That wasn’t an earthquake," she whispered, her voice laced with ice.
A second rumble echoed across the valley as another secondary blast tore through the distant night. Something catastrophic had just occurred right beyond Sol Haven’s southern defense perimeter, and whatever force caused it was rapidly sweeping toward them.
