Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 55: The First Night
The emergency alerts did not stop. Instead, they multiplied like a digital plague, filling every monitor on the command deck with screaming red text. Every communication screen across Sol Haven continued flashing with increasingly desperate reports from surrounding cities.
Military channels overlapped with civilian distress signals, emergency broadcasts, and fragmented transmissions from regional hubs that were rapidly losing contact with their central authorities.
Raviah Solomon stood near the observation console, her eyes fixed on the map as bright crimson icons bloomed across the continent. The apocalypse had not given them a grace period. It was not arriving next week, or even tomorrow morning. It was unfolding right in front of them tonight.
Rhyder’s jaw set like iron as another military transmission clicked through his encrypted earpiece.
"Eastern Defense Command to General Drakeheir," a frantic voice crackled over the speaker. "Multiple primary evacuation corridors are becoming entirely blocked. Panicked civilian traffic is overwhelming every major highway."
Rhyder did not hesitate for a single second. He barked his orders with practiced, lethal precision.
"Deploy the Third and Fifth Mobile Defense Regiments immediately."
There was a brief, hesitant pause on the other end.
"To where, General?"
"Cover every major transit route surrounding Sol Haven," Rhyder commanded, his voice cold and unyielding. "Secure the northern highway, the western agricultural road, and the main southern transit corridor."
"Yes, sir!"
"Establish controlled checkpoints," he added, leaning over the console. "No civilian convoy enters the valley without strict biological inspection, but keep those routes open for as long as physically possible."
"Understood, sir."
Rhyder tapped his radio, switching channels in the same fluid breath.
"Eastern Defense Command, authorize emergency fuel and ammunition allocation for every military unit reassigned to the Sol Haven perimeter."
The high-command verification came almost instantly.
"Authorization granted, General."
Raviah watched him coordinate the regional defense effort with frightening efficiency. He was not panicking, and neither was she, but both of them knew the world was collapsing beneath their feet.
She spun around toward the central security console, her voice ringing out clearly over the wailing sirens.
"Activate Fortress Protocol immediately!"
The security officer operating the station sat up straight, his fingers flying across the touch controls.
"Yes, Doctor!"
"Bring every civilian worker inside the primary fortress right now," Raviah ordered, pointing toward the eastern valley. "Shut down the automated machinery and seal the agricultural sectors."
The officer looked up in surprise. "What about the agricultural crews in the lower fields?"
"All of them," Raviah said firmly, leaving no room for argument. "Move the livestock into the reinforced concrete barns, and ensure no one stays outside after sunset."
"Right away, Doctor!"
Screaming emergency sirens erupted across the valley, their high-pitched wails echoing off the surrounding hills. Field workers abandoned their tools, hurrying toward the reinforced underground entryways in organized lines.
Heavy steel blast doors began sliding shut across the agricultural sectors with deafening clangs. Fully armed security teams moved into position along the perimeter walls, their rifles held at the ready.
The massive survival complex that Raviah had spent six long months constructing was finally roaring to life.
Then, the world shifted.
At first, it was barely noticeable, just a faint, rhythmic vibration pulsing beneath the soles of Raviah’s boots. She froze mid-step, her body going completely still as her senses heightened. Rhyder picked up on her sudden stillness instantly, his hand dropping to his sidearm.
"What is it?" he asked softly.
Before she could form a reply, the entire rooftop command deck violently lurched.
BOOM!
The reinforced steel railing rattled wildly against its mountings, and several overhead displays flickered and died. Down in the valley, terrified screams echoed through the command speakers as the earth beneath the eastern greenhouses buckled sideways.
"Earthquake!" someone screamed over the open tactical radio.
A second, more violent tremor struck before the first had even subsided.
The massive concrete foundation of the central fortress groaned under the immense force, absorbing the seismic shockwaves. Outside the walls, the surrounding landscape was thrown into absolute chaos.
Raviah grabbed the metal railing to steady her balance, her sharp medical focus overriding the rising panic.
"Report structural status!" she called out to the engineering desk.
"Greenhouse Three has sustained partial structural damage!" a technician yelled back over the noise. "Livestock Barn Two is holding steady!"
"Western storage warehouse reports minor cracks along the outer masonry, but the primary seals are intact!" another shouted.
Rhyder grabbed the central dispatch radio, his voice cutting through the noise.
"Deploy emergency response squads to Sector Three immediately."
Armed soldiers rushed down the metal stairwells toward the damaged sectors.
Then, a third tremor hit.
This one was far stronger than the previous two combined. The entire horizon seemed to roll like a wave, bending trees and snapping heavy power lines like thin thread.
A distant hillside collapsed in a thunderous avalanche of rock and topsoil, burying a section of the outer highway under tons of debris.
Raviah stared at the falling mountain in sheer disbelief.
"This isn’t supposed to happen yet," she murmured, her voice lost in the roaring earth.
Rhyder looked down at her, his eyes sharp.
"What do you mean?"
She shook her head, her mind racing through every memory of her past life.
"In my previous timeline, the first major earthquakes hit months into the collapse," she explained quickly, her pulse hammering. "And they were never this strong."
The fading evening light was suddenly swallowed whole as the sky turned a dark, unnatural crimson. Thick, bruised clouds twisted violently across the atmosphere, glowing with a strange, sickly energy.
Every surviving communication tower along the ridge began flickering rapidly, their lights dying one by one.
Then, the screens went completely black.
[REGIONAL POWER GRID FAILURE]
The cold red warning text flashed across the surviving secondary monitors. Another system alert popped up a second later.
[COMMUNICATION NETWORK INTERRUPTION]
Then a third, final notification appeared.
[SATELLITE CONNECTION LOST]
Raviah’s skin turned pale under the harsh red emergency lighting.
"It’s beginning," she whispered.
Rhyder stepped up beside her, staring out at the bleeding sky.
"Beginning?"
"This exact atmospheric phenomenon happened right before the total environmental collapse in my past life," she said, her fingers tightening on the railing.
A series of bright explosions lit up the distant horizon, casting long shadows across the valley. Main power stations were blowing out, and massive transmission towers were collapsing like dominoes into the dark.
Entire towns across the valley vanished into total blackness within seconds.
Yet, despite the chaos outside, something felt fundamentally wrong about the readings. Raviah slowly walked over to the seismic monitoring workstation, her eyes scanning the data streams.
The numbers were not dropping. They were climbing at an exponential rate. That defied every law of tectonic science she knew.
She leaned over the technician’s shoulder.
"Run a deep-structure scan right now."
The young technician hesitated, his hands hovering over the keys.
"Doctor, the regional seismic sensors are completely overloaded by the surface shocks."
"Bypass the automated filters and run it manually," Raviah commanded coldly.
"Yes, ma’am!"
The technician typed frantically, recalibrating the internal sensors beneath Sol Haven. For several agonizing seconds, the primary monitor displayed nothing but static and wild noise.
Then, the screen cleared, revealing a massive, continuous waveform.
Raviah’s breath caught in her throat. The technician froze, his eyes wide with terror as he stared at the readout.
"Doctor..." he stammered.
Rhyder closed the distance between them, stepping up to the glass screen.
"What am I looking at?"
Raviah could not answer him immediately.
The massive waveform was not moving in the jagged, predictable back-and-forth pattern of shifting fault lines. It was pulsing rhythmically, moving with a deliberate, terrifying intent.
It was moving like something alive.
Something colossal was carving a path deep beneath the Earth’s mantle.
The seismic computer suddenly let out a sharp, high-pitched warning chime.
[UNKNOWN SUBTERRANEAN MOVEMENT DETECTED]
A second line of red text rendered across the bottom of the screen.
[DEPTH: 8.7 KILOMETERS]
Before anyone could speak, the depth tracking number rapidly ticked down.
[DEPTH: 8.2 KILOMETERS]
Raviah’s dark eyes widened as she realized the horror of what the sensors were tracking.
"It’s not a fault line shifting," she whispered, her blood running ice-cold. "It’s ascending."
Rhyder’s stoic expression hardened into absolute iron.
"How fast is it moving?"
The technician stared at the rapidly changing coordinates on his radar grid, his face completely drained of color.
"General..." the young man choked out, his voice trembling violently.
"Speak, soldier," Rhyder ordered.
The technician swallowed hard, pointing a shaking finger at the screen.
"Whatever that massive energy signature is..."
The seismic map suddenly flashed brightly as a thick red trajectory line cut upward through the subterranean layers of the continent.
It was heading straight for the surface beneath their feet.
"...it’s coming up!"
