Chapter 886 - 885: Lighting Another Bonfire
Chapter 886: Chapter 885: Lighting Another Bonfire
The large bonfire was lit under the Angel Giant Tree, its blazing flames illuminating the temporary barracks on the island in the middle of the lake.
Lighting a bonfire during celebrations has become a habit for the children of Fairy Tales. Having finished a major task, built a new house, or when new "elders" come of age or younger siblings awaken and master their powers, these are all worthy reasons for them to light a grand bonfire.
However, such celebrations left the newly born Dark Moon People somewhat at a loss.
It had been so long since they had a reason to "celebrate" — to the point where laughing loudly beside a bonfire felt like something recorded only in books.
When the bonfire was lit, many Dark Moon People didn’t even stop their tasks; they continued moving materials and digging ditches by the lamplight until Red and Sela personally dragged them away from the construction site.
"Come take a break and eat something," the long-haired princess happily said, dragging someone she didn’t even know, "You’ve hardly eaten anything all day, just gnawed on those military rations at noon... There’s roasted meat here, all brought from the cafeteria!"
The red-eyed woman she dragged along came to the bonfire in confusion, seeing a group of kids who helped during the day singing and dancing around the fire, and a young girl with long straight black hair excitingly shouting in the bonfire, her entire body seemingly composed of flames, like a pure fire-formed demon spirit.
A large number of skewers were stuck in the ground beside the bonfire, pierced with chunks of meat, vegetables, sauce-coated buns, and mushrooms from the Black Forest.
The fox girl squatted on all fours beside the pile of skewers, drooling with firelight reflecting on her face.
Yu Sheng sat next to Red, holding a skewer of roasted mushrooms: "Hey, let me tell you, the green-haired rabbits on the plains are poisonous, so be careful when you go hunting... Don’t ask how I know this."
"There’s more to watch out for than just that," Sela said seriously, sitting on the other side of Red, "This is an unfamiliar world, filled with animals and plants we don’t recognize, so everything must be carefully identified when obtaining food... And I can’t imagine anyone would just catch and eat something randomly in such a place, right?"
A mushroom got stuck in Yu Sheng’s throat, unable to go up or down, nearly choking him, while Erin, perched on his shoulder, laughed uncontrollably, slipped and fell to the ground, her head rolling off her neck, spinning along the ground.
The puppet’s head rolled past Yu Sheng’s feet, through the flickering firelight, past the Star Sea Witch folding a paper extinguisher by the bonfire, and stopped upon hitting a large rock by the lakeshore, blinking up at the sky.
The pumpkin carriage was parked atop the Angel Giant Tree, revealing the curtain of auroras in the night sky between the tree branches, with tiny spots of light escaping from the tree crown, dancing around the giant tree in the night sky.
"Alright then..."
The puppet’s head said softly.
Luna came over from the lakeshore, looking down to pick up the small head. She spotted Yu Sheng looking for the head with the puppet’s body in his arms and smiled: "I found this here."
Yu Sheng put Erin’s head back on her body, while not far from the bonfire came the beautiful and lyrical singing of the Mermaid.
The piercing, frightening laughter of the "Fire Stick" dancing in the fire was finally subdued.
Hu Li came over carrying two large skewers of roasted meat, her mouth glistening with oil, eyes glowing brightly.
Red followed by her side.
"Savior, the meat is ready!" Hu Li cheerfully handed a skewer to Yu Sheng, "I added an extra layer of sauce for you!"
Yu Sheng rubbed the fox girl’s fur behind her ears while accepting the skewer and placing Erin back on his shoulder.
"The location for the city is set; it’s in that direction," Red pointed solemnly across the lake to Yu Sheng, "Though there’s not even a foundation yet, I’ve already thought of a name: New Moon City."
Yu Sheng pondered and asked curiously, "I’m not quite clear... is it New·Moon City or New Moon·City?"
"It’s New·Moon City," Red couldn’t help but laugh, then spoke with a hint of nostalgia and sentiment, "Moon City was once our capital. A long, long time ago, our home planet had a natural moon, and the earliest blood kin awakened under its light, giving our capital its name..."
As Hu Li listened, she suddenly looked enlightened: "Ah, no wonder your Earth Core reactor back then was called the Moon Engine..."
Red sighed softly.
"Yes, ’moon’ has been an incredibly important part of our worldview and culture from the beginning. Yet, on the day the world twisted, our moon burst like a bubble in space, and Moon City soon after turned to ruins...
"Before the Sanctuary closed, I promised my people I would lead them out and build a new Moon City. I never imagined this promise might be fulfilled in this way today."
Red pursed her lips, suddenly turning to Yu Sheng, bowing deeply.
Her solemn bow came so unexpectedly it caught Yu Sheng off guard. His right hand was gripping a skewer, his left on Erin’s shoulder, and he bent down to help Red, nearly dropping Erin, so he quickly pulled back to steady her, instinctively extending the meat skewer...
Red was just about to articulate words of heartfelt gratitude when she found a thunderstorm skewer in her face, stunned as she looked at Yu Sheng in confusion.
Yu Sheng felt awkward for less than half a second, then laughed joyfully.
"Eat and drink without worries, don’t let anything weigh on your heart. You need to eat more meat. Look how thin you are," he said casually, retrieving the skewer, "Of course not this one, this one’s from Hu Li."
The fox girl was instantly delighted, her tail sweeping up a storm of dust on the spot.
Red stared fixedly at the scene, and then a smile finally reappeared on her face.
"Thank you for your concern," she didn’t bend down again, but her words carried even more sincerity than before, "Thank you for everything you’ve done for us—starting today, you are not only my personal friend but also a forever friend of the entire Dark Moon Royal Court. Whenever there is a need for our services, you can speak up at any time."
"Alright, I’ve noted that down," Yu Sheng nodded happily, then his gaze swept across the giant tree under the night sky, raising his eyebrows slightly, "If that’s the case, you all might actually have a mission starting from today."
Red’s expression immediately turned serious: "Mission? Please tell."
"Protect this tree well, and in the future, you need to protect the things on this tree as well," Yu Sheng said unhurriedly, "I had a talk with Lucrecia. Given the current state, the best ’construction site’ for the Calibrator is precisely this Angel Giant Tree..."
He paused at this point, continuing to explain: "The World Bridge is the foundational blueprint for the Calibrator, and the Tree Angel was one of the original designers and constructors of the World Bridge. Additionally, the Tree Angel may also carry the decryption key for those calibration data back then. With the connection established by the Soul Wilderness Crystal Tree now, considering multiple aspects, we believe integrating the data structure of the ’Calibrator’ directly with the Tree Angel will achieve the highest operational efficiency and the most stable system structure."
Yu Sheng spoke with a professional face, but just as he finished, Erin on his shoulder suddenly perked up: "This is actually all Sister Lucy said; Yu Sheng doesn’t understand this at all..."
Yu Sheng instantly turned his head: "But I expressed my wise and divine approval!"
Red’s gaze moved between Yu Sheng and Erin, quickly understanding what Yu Sheng meant, her expression turning serious.
"I understand, then the newborn Dark Moon People will become the guardian race of the Angel Giant Tree and the Calibrator—until the day the World Ark crosses the Sea of Annihilation."
Yu Sheng smiled, nodding to Red.
And by the distant bonfire, a radiant golden-haired figure was vigorously waving at him.
"Brother! Do you want to eat roasted pea pods? We’ve roasted a ton here!"
Snow White sat on a stone next to the long-haired princess, holding a super-long tree branch in the bonfire, roasting something. Upon hearing the long-haired princess’s shout, she didn’t even lift her head: "We eat this stuff every day in the valley, haven’t you had enough?"
"Nonsense, of course, I’ve had enough," the long-haired princess murmured as she leaned over, "So I was thinking if I could drag Brother into the pit too... What are you roasting over there?"
Snow White pulled the long branch back a little, shaking the small piece of fruit on it: "I don’t know what it is. I saw those ’Dark Moon People’ cutting some large pieces of fruit into smaller pieces like this and roasting them to eat, so I asked for some. It looks like fruit, but after roasting, it feels like a chewy cake. It’s quite tasty."
The long-haired princess blinked, looking into the distance, and after a while suddenly exclaimed: "Oh my gosh! They’ve cut and eaten the shell left after they resurrected themselves!"
Snow White thought for a moment: "But I feel it’s quite tasty."
"...Let me have a taste too."
"You ask them yourself! I roasted this with great difficulty."
Lucrecia listened to the sounds of noisy arguments around her, while seriously folding another extinguisher canister out of paper and placing it beside the large root of a tree behind her.
The sound of children’s voices are indeed noisy, some adults’ voices are pretty noisy too.
But unknowingly, she had already gotten used to these noisy argument sounds.
It reminded her of the liveliest times on the Lost Home.
The fairy tale children gathered around, and when they saw Lucrecia folding colored paper, they instantly became as excited as if they’d discovered a new continent.
"We want it too! We want it too!"
The Star Sea Witch smiled gently: "Alright, what do you want?"
The children began shouting loudly—
"Frog!"
"Little rabbit!"
"Little turtle!"
"Thunderstorm Tornado Dragon Ship of the sixth generation god-mechanical battle team!"
minutes later, Baili Qing, who was originally meditating by the lakeside, suddenly opened her eyes, staring at the mechanical dinosaur speeding across the lake, uttered a puzzled mumble—
"Why is there a Thunderstorm Tornado Dragon Ship of the sixth generation god-mechanical battle team here?!"
