Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 986: Specimen Creation
Lu Chuan took a deep breath the first time he saw the case file.
The main reason was that the criminal methods in this case were especially cruel; the perpetrator had performed special treatment on the body after the murder.
"Everyone, familiarize yourselves with the basic details of the case. The case was discovered yesterday, and due to the unusual circumstances at the scene, the provincial department has asked our major crimes unit to intervene directly."
Li Donglin frowned deeply, his tone extremely serious. This case was personally ordered for immediate intervention by the director of the provincial public security department, with the requirement for a rapid investigation.
Originally, the case should have been handled by the criminal investigation team of the provincial capital’s public security bureau, as it occurred in the provincial capital. However, due to a major hosting event in the city, failing to resolve the case promptly could impact the event.
Thus, the provincial leaders attached great importance to it, ordering the provincial department to resolve it within a limited time. Upon receiving the order, the provincial public security director immediately had Li Donglin convene the major crimes unit for rapid intervention.
What Lu Chuan and his team now had were some photos from the crime scene. After the report, the capital’s criminal investigation team had been there but was stopped before a crime scene investigation could be conducted. Found yesterday, the major crimes unit assembled to head to the scene right after reviewing the materials.
The entire major crimes unit assembled by 10:30 a.m. on the second day after the incident.
They then entered the crime scene.
The crime scene was located in an abandoned logistics park in the North Suburb.
The so-called logistics park was essentially a large field with two factory buildings now completely abandoned, lacking security personnel and any company presence.
"Who reported the case?"
Standing outside the crime warehouse, Lu Chuan asked the local criminal investigation team detective.
The person replied wryly, "Honestly, there’s hardly anyone here. If not for a coincidence, the body might not have been discovered for some time."
The detective then briefly explained the report situation.
It turned out that the report was made by a live-stream host.
The host recently wanted to organize an outdoor adventure live-stream event.
So, this host was scouting some abandoned factory buildings for a suitable location.
When they arrived at the North Suburb logistics park, they smelled something rotten outside the warehouse, went in for a look, and immediately reported discovering a decaying body.
Lu Chuan listened to the explanation while starting to put on his forensic gear, including gloves and shoe covers.
From the current understanding, the scene was relatively preserved, with only the host having entered the factory, and no local forensics conducted.
Though the person inside had been dead for some time, the scene seemed largely undisturbed.
The putrid smell was nauseating.
Although it’s winter, the deceased has been dead for likely over half a month.
The body has started to decompose.
The first step of forensics: taking photographs.
The warehouse, about 500 square meters, had the body placed in the center.
Lu Chuan began taking photographs from the warehouse door, capturing every detail without omission.
Apart from Lu Chuan, others waited outside; the forensic doctor had yet to enter until Lu Chuan finished surveying the surroundings.
After over an hour of work, Lu Chuan completed the environmental documentation, leaving mainly the examination of the body.
This was why Lu Chuan felt nauseous after seeing the preliminary materials: the killer had uniquely treated the body after the murder.
The body lay flat on a long table.
The cause of death is currently undetermined.
What was shocking was the state of the body.
Though somewhat decomposed, it was clear the body had been sliced into many thin sheets.
It resembled a specimen, pieced together into a complete body.
The major crimes unit lacked a forensic doctor, so the capital’s criminal investigation forensic team handled the body examination.
"Bone saw."
Lu Chuan carefully examined the body.
The body had been cut into 128 pieces with very neat edges.
Among the machines Lu Chuan had encountered, only a bone saw seemed capable of such tidy segmentation.
"Traces of freezing."
The body showed clear signs of freezing, which had only started to decompose long after softening upon being left here.
No clothing was found at the scene. Fortunately, due to the low winter temperatures, though the body had decayed, it wasn’t too severe, allowing a faint recognition of the face.
"Male, height is 1.72 meters, weight..."
This time, Lu Chuan was the main responsible for the body examination, with the forensic doctor assisting him.
The basic information of the entity is currently being verified.
Meanwhile, the major crimes unit members are busily engaged.
Lu Chuan had already surveyed the scene, with others examining the surroundings and identifying the body.
Since the body was found yesterday, though the provincial department’s forensic team hadn’t entered, awaiting the major crimes group, they had prepared some preliminary work.
"The identity of the body is currently unidentified."
The capital’s criminal investigation team captain reported to Li Donglin that the body’s identity remained unverified; matching against construction workers hadn’t yielded results yet.
There were few surveillance cameras except on the main road leading out of the logistics park, which the criminal investigation team had retrieved.
However, no significant progress had been made.
Though abandoned, the logistics park lay along a major traffic artery entering and exiting the capital.
Traffic flow was consistently heavy.
Furthermore, the precise time and location of the victim’s murder remains uncertain, leaving open whether the murder and body handling occurred here or elsewhere.
Thus, checking surveillance involves a significant workload, appearing somewhat unfruitful currently.
As the afternoon approached, Lu Chuan nearly completed the on-site examination.
Removing his gloves, Lu Chuan immediately reported to Li Donglin the related findings.
"The body shows freezing marks, likely frozen for easier slicing. The precise time of death isn’t certain, but likely between 15 to 20 days ago."
Determining a frozen body’s time of death post-thawing is highly challenging, usually providing only a probabilistic time range.
"The cause of death remains unclear; the forensic team needs a detailed examination."
