Chapter 1032: Chapter 486: First Meeting, Second Meeting, Third Meeting (First Update)_2
Lawrence Winters let out a derisive snort and shook his head. "Mr. Zhuge, I think you’re jumping to conclusions way too rashly."
"How is it rash? Are you saying what I said isn’t true?" Mr. Zhuge smiled without smiling, using Lawrence’s own tactic to counterattack.
"Did Mr. Yu and Mrs. Wright meet through their parents and then fall in love at first sight?"
"Did they get married and have children very quickly?"
"Did Mr. Yu and Miss Tang’s mother never have the chance to actually get involved with each other?"
"And did Miss Tang’s mother then have Miss Tang with someone else?"
That string of questions, one after another, basically required a "yes" for each one.
But Lawrence was not so easy to fool.
Ignoring Mr. Zhuge, she took out her "scientific spirit" and started digging down to the roots.
"Mrs. Wright, just now you said you and Mr. Yu met through your parents, fell in love at first sight, then quickly got engaged and married. May I ask, how quick is ’quick’?"
A blush rose to Mrs. Wright’s face; she looked a bit shy. "...Is that really important?"
"It is! It’s the best way to prove just how strong Mr. Yu’s love-at-first-sight was for you! I’ve always thought that the greatest expression of a man’s love for a woman is being willing to marry her—and not signing a prenup." Lawrence nodded with a cheeky grin.
Mrs. Wright covered her mouth, laughing. "Heavenly Master Lawrence, you really do know how to talk. There’s nothing I can’t say here. Back then we hadn’t known each other for long—about a month, I think—before he proposed. We got engaged, and we were married within a year."
Mr. Zhuge immediately chuckled loudly. "Now that’s fast! Mr. Yu must truly love you!"
Lawrence smiled without saying anything.
After Mr. Zhuge finished his flood of honeyed words, Lawrence calmly tossed out another question: "Mrs. Wright, then may I ask when exactly you and Mr. Yu first met? And when you got married? Or, to put it another way—how many years ago did you meet, and how many years ago did you marry?"
Mrs. Wright: "..."
The blush drained quickly from her face; she frowned slightly. "Is that really important?"
"Of course it is. According to what you just said, you and Mr. Yu fell in love at first sight, got engaged after a month, and married within a year. Your children are still young—the older one is only four or five, the younger two or three. That suggests you waited many years after marriage to have kids, which is perfectly possible. But when exactly did you two meet?"
Mrs. Wright looked a bit ill at ease and said coolly, "I don’t think that question has anything to do with my commission. I’m entitled not to answer."
Lawrence raised an eyebrow. "Mrs. Wright, this question has a great deal to do with your commission. If you feel the need to conceal even this, we’ll have to treat everything you just told us with suspicion."
"For example, this whole business about love at first sight, engaged at second sight, married at third sight..."
"It’s that serious?" Mrs. Wright glanced at Mr. Zhuge, hinting at something. "...Wasn’t it Mr. Zhuge who took my commission? Do you think this is a question I should answer?"
Mr. Zhuge smiled. "As far as I’m concerned, there’s no need. But Lawrence and I aren’t on the same team; she may have other ideas, you never know."
Mrs. Wright fell silent.
There was no way Lawrence would just roll over because Mrs. Wright didn’t want to talk.
She pulled out her phone and did a quick search online. Without even looking up, she said with a smile, "Mr. Yu and Miss Tang’s mother met thirty-five years ago. According to the information we have, Mr. Yu was fourteen thirty-five years ago."
"And Mr. Yu and Mrs. Wright got married..." Lawrence dragged out her tone, the tail of her sentence hanging there, like she was waiting for the second shoe to drop upstairs, making everyone’s hearts tighten and chill.
Mrs. Wright folded her hands in front of her and raised her voice. "Heavenly Master Lawrence, why are you looking up our marriage date?"
"Don’t tell me your marriage date is a ’privacy’ issue too?" Lawrence suddenly laughed brightly. "Found it! The wedding announcement for Mr. Isaac York and Miss Anna Wright! It’s right here in black and white in the local newspaper!"
Back then, local papers overseas liked to publish things like wedding announcements, birthdays, and obituaries.
After the internet came along, traditional print media digitized their old issues and put them in freely searchable archives.
So with a casual search, Lawrence found the item in a local Chinese-language newspaper.
"...Let me see the date... Mm... This doesn’t look like thirty-five years ago. It’s actually..." Lawrence lifted her head and smiled at Mrs. Wright. "Do you want to say it, or should I?"
Mrs. Wright seemed to have forgotten about that. She said in surprise, "When Mr. Yu and I got married, the internet hadn’t even been born yet. Where would any online news come from?"
