Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child
Chapter 58: The Truth Behind Yuna’s Curse
Searing red and blue lightning split the sky. A massive bolt struck the highest outer tower of the Hero’s Lair, branching into jagged veins that illuminated the flooded fortress in strobe-like flashes.
Freezing rain fell through the broken vaulted ceiling, pooling on the ancient masonry. The stone groaned beneath the atmospheric pressure.
In the center of the ruined chamber, Kōya stood still.
His left hand glowed. He carried Yuna’s energy now. Everything she had accumulated over a decade. Every fragment of Heroic Mana she had stored inside that crystal had become a permanent part of him.
His right side remained wrapped in a suffocating, violet-black Demonic Aura.
His left side radiated pure golden Heroic Power.
The two catastrophic forces remained distinct, splitting his physical vessel down the middle. They moved together. Not effortlessly—it still felt as though he were trying to hold two opposing hurricanes inside his ribs—but enough.
His ragged breathing steadied into a calm rhythm. His wounded body stopped trembling. The crushing physical exhaustion that had nearly forced him to his knees receded just enough for him to stand his ground.
Across the flooded chamber, Zeref stared at him.
Stormfront remained gripped tightly in the demon’s armored hand. Lightning crawled across the dark blade.
For the first time since the battle began, the Demon Peer did not attack.
His red eyes remained fixed on Kōya’s glowing left hand. Then, his gaze shifted past the boy to the empty crystal resting on the altar. The darkened vessel lay dead. Its brilliant blue radiance was gone. Its tragic purpose fulfilled.
A mask of pure dread settled over Zeref’s face.
"So," he said quietly, his voice cutting through the thunder. "She really gave you everything."
Kōya said nothing.
He remembered her final, whispered words fading into the light.
*Keep going.*
Yuna’s voice existed perfectly inside him as a living memory. An absolute reason to endure.
Zeref’s massive, leathery wings spread wide. Thunder exploded directly above them.
"You should be dead, boy."
Kōya raised the massive Hero Sword. Blinding golden light crawled along its razor edge.
"I have heard that before."
Zeref disappeared.
The stone floor directly beneath Kōya exploded.
Kōya moved on blind instinct.
Stormfront came crashing down from directly above his skull. Kōya crossed the heavy Hero Sword horizontally against it in a two-handed guard.
The kinetic impact sent a shockwave ripping through the chamber.
The ancient stone shattered beneath Kōya’s boots. His knees bent under the sheer weight of the Demon Peer. The physical force threatened to drive him straight into the bedrock.
Zeref pushed harder, roaring over the storm. Searing blue lightning poured from Stormfront, spreading like a deadly web across the flooded floor.
Kōya released a highly compressed, point-blank burst of Demonic Aura directly from his right side.
The violet-black energy exploded outward. The repulsive force allowed his body to slide rapidly backward across the slick stone instead of being crushed beneath the strike.
He broke the grinding blade lock. Zeref’s heavy sword fell through the empty air, burying itself deep into the masonry.
Kōya didn’t stop moving. He stepped onto the side of a broken, leaning pillar. One step. Two. He launched himself upward.
Zeref wrenched his sword free and turned.
Too late.
Kōya’s Hero Sword struck in a devastating horizontal arc directly across the demon’s broad chest.
A massive golden slash tore through the curtain of rain.
Zeref twisted his upper body backward with unnatural speed. The holy blade barely missed piercing his heart.
A thick line of black blood appeared across his armored side.
Zeref was thrown backward by the kinetic shock, tumbling through the air before landing heavily in the puddles. He slowly pushed himself up, staring at the fresh blood coating his gauntlet. Then, he looked up at Kōya.
"You..."
Kōya landed perfectly balanced on a ruined, elevated balcony. His chest rose and fell evenly.
"I told you." He tightened his grip on the golden hilt. "I am taking my mother home."
Dark recognition settled over Zeref’s features.
"You still foolishly think this is about your mother."
Kōya froze.
Zeref stood to his full height and raised Stormfront. Blinding lightning gathered around the dark blade, illuminating his cruel smile.
"You came all this way because you blindly followed the sloppy trail she deliberately left behind. You arrogantly thought my vanguard simply captured her during the chaos."
Kōya’s eyes narrowed. "They did."
Zeref smiled. "No."
The single word hit Kōya harder than any physical blow.
His fingers tightened agonizingly around his sword.
Zeref lifted his head proudly. "She was no casualty of war. They were explicitly instructed to take her."
Kōya’s expression hardened. "By whom?"
Zeref looked directly into the boy’s dual-lit eyes.
"By someone who understood exactly what she secretly was."
The massive chamber went deathly silent for half a heartbeat.
Then, Kōya moved.
He crossed the distance between them in a violet-black blur.
Zeref met him head-on.
The holy Hero Sword collided brutally with the corrupted Stormfront. The deafening sound of shattering steel rang clearly through the ruined Lair.
Kōya struck with blinding speed. Zeref blocked.
Kōya struck again, pouring golden mana into the blade. Zeref twisted his body.
A massive lightning arc flashed across the room. Kōya ducked beneath it. The bolt tore through a stone statue directly behind him, obliterating it.
He stepped onto the statue’s falling shoulder and launched himself sideways.
Zeref followed his trajectory.
Their legendary blades collided again in mid-air. Kōya leveraged his momentum and drove the Demon Peer straight backward through a solid interior wall.
The ancient stone exploded outward in a shower of gravel.
Zeref emerged coughing through the other side of the breach. His massive wings snapped open. He rose into the air.
Kōya looked upward from the rubble.
The sky still belonged to Zeref.
Zeref raised Stormfront high. The dark sword began pulling ambient lightning directly from the heavy clouds above.
The entire ruined fortress responded. Every remaining tower. Every broken metal conductor. Every exposed iron chain. The massive, localized storm network came completely alive.
Zeref disappeared into the blinding grid.
Kōya stood still in the rubble, waiting.
One second. Two. Three.
Lightning struck directly from above.
Kōya jumped horizontally. The massive bolt passed inches beneath him, superheating the air.
Zeref materialized directly behind the blast. Stormfront swung in a lethal, silent arc aimed squarely at Kōya’s spine.
Kōya twisted his body in mid-air. His free right hand released a compressed burst of Demonic Aura directly against the air pressure.
The kinetic force redirected his trajectory. The crackling blade passed harmlessly inches from his shoulder.
Kōya continued his rotation perfectly. The heavy Hero Sword struck Zeref brutally across his extended arm.
Zeref recoiled with a hiss of pain, black blood spraying into the rain.
Kōya landed smoothly on a thick, hanging iron chain. The rusted metal swung under his weight.
Zeref hovered several yards away, clutching his bleeding arm, looking at the boy in genuine assessment. "You learned my aerial patterns quickly."
Kōya stared coldly back. "I have had an exceptional teacher."
Zeref’s eyes narrowed. "Who?"
Kōya thought briefly of Yuna. Of the grueling hours in the courtyards. Then of Seiya. "People you do not deserve to know."
Zeref’s expression darkened. He raised Stormfront again.
"Then perhaps you deserve to know something else entirely."
The ambient lightning stopped.
It did not disappear. The entire raging storm remained unnaturally suspended in the dark sky, locked in place.
Kōya’s combat instincts flared.
Zeref lowered the tip of his sword slightly, his posture relaxing into cruel arrogance. "You asked me where your precious mother was."
Kōya tracked the demon’s every micro-movement. "Yes."
"I can tell you."
Kōya did not move an inch from the swinging chain. "Then talk."
Zeref offered a cold, empty smile. "But you may not like the answer."
Kōya stepped forward onto a solid stone ledge. "I don’t care."
Zeref looked deeply at the boy for a long moment. Then, he delivered the killing blow.
"I knew Yuna."
Kōya stopped.
The pouring rain continued falling around them. The simple words seemed insignificant compared to the apocalyptic storm.
Yet, something inside Kōya changed.
"You knew her?"
Zeref nodded slowly. "Long before she ever knew you."
Kōya’s grip tightened so hard around the Hero Sword that the leather groaned. "How?"
Zeref’s ancient eyes became distant. "She was very young. I clearly remember her father."
Kōya said nothing.
"Her mother too." The words dripped with malice. "I killed them."
Kōya’s eyes widened in sheer shock.
The heavy rain struck the cold stone between them.
"You..."
Zeref continued, his voice perfectly calm. "I personally killed Yuna’s parents."
For a suspended moment, there was no lightning. No rolling thunder. No battle.
Only those echoing words.
Yuna. Her parents. Zeref.
Kōya vividly remembered her bright smile by the lake. The desperate, stubborn way she trained in the mud. The incredibly gentle way she had bandaged his bloody injuries. The way she had proudly declared she loved him.
His scarred left hand began to tremble.
"Why?"
Zeref looked down at him. "Because they were standing in the way."
Kōya’s eyes darkened into abyssal voids.
Zeref continued. "They were fiercely protecting her. They believed she was simply a talented child."
Kōya let the pressure build in his chest.
"They were entirely wrong." Zeref’s gaze moved toward the pulsing blue core of Stormfront. "Yuna possessed something extraordinary."
Kōya’s voice was dangerously low. "Don’t."
Zeref ignored him. "Her massive Heroic Mana. Her exponential growth. Her boundless potential."
"Stop."
"Her soul."
The single word struck Kōya harder than any physical weapon ever could.
His Demonic Aura flickered dangerously.
Zeref’s smile disappeared, replaced by cold pride. "I planted something deep inside her that day."
Silence.
Kōya stared at the monster. "What?"
"A seed." Zeref casually tapped the center of his own armored chest. "A tiny curse-seed."
Kōya’s expression became terrifyingly empty.
Zeref continued his confession. "It was so small and subtle that even the highest-tier mages at the Academy who examined her soul failed to notice it."
Kōya’s fingers curled so tightly around the hilt that his knuckles bled. "What exactly did you do to her?"
"I simply gave it time." Zeref looked proud of his atrocity. "That was the most important variable."
Kōya stepped slowly forward. Zeref remained perfectly still, confident in his high ground.
"I did not need to control her." His voice was conversational, clinical. "I allowed the dark seed to remain dormant."
Kōya dragged the air into his lungs. "Why?"
"Because I wanted to see what it would become."
He spoke the words like a gardener discussing a crop.
Kōya stared at him, paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of the cruelty.
Zeref continued. "The curse grew as she grew."
Another massive flash of red lightning illuminated the ruined chamber.
"It grew directly into her soul."
Kōya’s jaw tightened painfully.
"With her Heroic Mana."
The pure golden aura burning around Kōya’s left side began to brighten.
"With her physical strength. With her endless potential."
Zeref looked directly into Kōya’s eyes. "And with everything she eventually became."
Kōya’s voice was barely a whisper over the rain. "Her pain..."
Zeref nodded slowly. "Part of it."
The golden light burning around Kōya’s left hand trembled. "The sudden weakness."
"Part of it."
"The suffocating pressure."
"Part of it."
Kōya’s breathing became entirely erratic. "The horrific exhaustion after she used her power."
"Yes."
Kōya looked down at his trembling hand.
He remembered the agonizing memories. Yuna sitting alone in the dark. Yuna desperately wondering what was broken inside her body. Yuna stubbornly training anyway, pushing through the agony. Yuna meticulously storing her power. Yuna bravely deciding that if she did not have much time left, she would make every single moment count.
His dark eyes slowly lifted.
"You knew."
Zeref said nothing.
"You knew exactly what was happening to her inside."
"I knew enough."
"You sat back and watched her suffer."
"Yes."
"You watched her grow."
"Yes."
"You watched her fall in love."
Zeref’s ancient eyes remained perfectly cold. "Yes."
Something deep inside Kōya irreparably cracked.
"You watched her become happy."
Zeref answered flatly: "Yes."
The single word echoed through the cavernous chamber.
Kōya stared at the monster. "And you did nothing."
Zeref tilted his head slightly. "I was waiting."
"For what?!"
"For the fruit to fully ripen."
Kōya’s dual-lit eyes burned.
Zeref raised one clawed hand. "The curse eventually became something far more substantial than the simple seed I originally planted."
His fingers curled slowly into a fist. "It wrapped entirely around her soul."
"Vines," Kōya whispered.
Zeref smiled faintly. "So, you saw them during the transfer."
Kōya remembered the horror. The invisible, agonizing pain. The unexplained weakness. The terrible thing Yuna could never logically identify or fight.
He had assumed it was simple physical exhaustion from overtraining. He had desperately hoped perhaps there was some minor, correctable flaw in her arcane body.
It had been a deliberate, engineered parasite. A highly complex curse.
Zeref continued, basking in the revelation. "The seed rapidly became a structural foundation. A soul-vine. It completely surrounded her core."
Kōya’s golden aura intensified, burning away the rain.
"It held her powerful soul securely in place."
The solid stone floor beneath Kōya’s boots cracked.
Zeref watched the power build. "And when the optimal time finally came, I fully intended to harvest everything."
Kōya’s voice was almost a silent whisper. "Harvest."
"Her accumulated power." Zeref proudly raised Stormfront. "Her magnificent soul. Everything the curse had patiently accumulated over the years."
Kōya’s eyes became completely still. "And you call that parasitic rot power?"
Zeref smiled. "I call it flawless preparation."
