Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child
Chapter 57: The Years She Had Left
The years passed.
The crystal became significantly brighter.
Yuna became undeniably stronger. Her Heroic Mana grew exponentially.
And the quiet relationship between her and Kōya changed fundamentally with it.
They were no longer simply rivals. They were best friends.
Then, something significantly deeper appeared.
Neither of them spoke aloud about it immediately. But it was undeniably there. In the lingering way Yuna looked at him when he wasn’t paying attention. In the exact way Kōya’s gaze softened when he looked at her. In this way, the silence between them stopped feeling empty.
One quiet evening, they stood side-by-side beneath the stars.
Yuna looked upward.
"Kōya."
"Hm?"
"Do you ever think about what happens after all this?"
"After what?"
"After we graduate. After we become strong enough."
Kōya thought about it carefully. "I don’t know."
"I do."
He looked at her profile.
Yuna smiled softly. "I want a quiet life."
"You?"
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"You fight every day like you are actively preparing for the end of the world."
"Maybe that is why I want something quiet afterward."
Kōya smiled faintly. "What would you do?"
"Travel."
"Where?"
"Absolutely everywhere." She looked toward the distant, dark horizon. "I want to see places I’ve never seen before."
"And after that?"
Yuna thought for a long moment. "Maybe..." She hesitated, glancing at him from the corner of her eye. "Maybe I’d stay somewhere quiet. With someone I trust."
Kōya looked at her.
Yuna looked away quickly.
Neither spoke another word.
The memory faded into the dark.
Then another appeared.
Yuna was older. Much older than the little girl who had first lifted the heavy wooden sword.
She stood entirely alone in the sprawling training grounds.
Stormfront was gripped tightly in her hand. The massive crystal attached to it was brilliant. Years upon years of dense Heroic Mana had accumulated within its core.
Yuna looked deeply at the crystal. Then at Stormfront. Then toward the distant, threatening horizon.
She was exhausted.
Kōya could clearly see it. Not ordinary, physical exhaustion, but something terrifying she had carried silently for years.
Yet, she still stood perfectly straight.
She raised Stormfront high.
Blinding lightning struck the ground nearby, shattering the stone.
Yuna didn’t flinch. She trained again.
And again.
Every single year, she added more. Every minor battle. Every grueling lesson. Every quiet moment of fear. Every bright moment of hope.
She was preparing for a horrific future she could not foresee. And perhaps, somewhere deep inside herself, she subconsciously knew she might never live to reach it.
But she continued anyway.
The memory changed.
Yuna sat quietly beside Kōya.
He was injured. She carefully wrapped a clean bandage around his bleeding arm.
"You should be far more careful," she scolded softly.
"You say that literally every time," he replied.
"Because you never actually listen."
"You worry entirely too much."
Yuna stopped wrapping. Her fingers rested gently against the white bandage.
"I worry about you."
Kōya looked at her.
She didn’t withdraw her hand. For once, neither of them looked away.
"I really do love you."
The words were quiet. Simple. There was no grand declaration. Just the absolute truth.
Kōya’s heart tightened with physical agony.
He had heard her say it before, by the lake. But now he was experiencing the moment from directly inside her own memory. He could physically feel exactly what she had felt.
The fear of rejection. The overwhelming happiness. The crushing uncertainty. The profound hope.
Yuna loved him. Not because he was incredibly powerful. Not because of a prophecy. She loved him simply because he was Kōya.
The memory continued.
More years. More brutal training. More Heroic Mana.
The crystal grew incredibly bright.
But so did the strange, terrifying darkness growing inside Yuna.
There were horrific moments when she struggled to breathe. Moments when her strong body weakened entirely without warning. Moments when she woke violently from sleep with agonizing pain spreading through her chest.
She never discovered why.
She searched the archives. She trained harder. She tried desperately to understand her own failing body.
Nothing ever explained it.
Eventually, she simply stopped asking. Not because she had passively accepted her fate, but because she had decided it would not stop her.
"If I don’t have much time..."
Yuna stood tall before the glowing crystal. Her hand rested firmly against its smooth surface.
"...then I will make every single moment count."
Heroic Mana flowed heavily into the crystal. The light expanded.
"I’ll leave something behind."
More power.
"I’ll protect someone."
More.
"I’ll make sure someone can continue."
More.
The crystal shone like a star.
Yuna smiled.
And for the very first time, Kōya fully understood something fundamental.
The crystal had never simply been a tactical storage vessel. It was Yuna’s defiant answer to absolute uncertainty.
She couldn’t control what was happening inside her own body. She couldn’t understand the agonizing pain. She couldn’t know what nightmare tomorrow would bring.
But she could choose what to do with today.
So she trained. She loved deeply. She prepared. She stored her immense power.
And she stubbornly kept moving forward.
The final memory appeared.
Yuna stood entirely alone in the armory.
Stormfront rested beside her. The massive crystal was nearly full to capacity.
She looked at it for a very long time. Then, she touched the crystal with both hands. Her eyes closed.
A massive, final amount of pure Heroic Mana began flowing rapidly into it. The golden-white light expanded, filling the room.
Kōya watched her expression intently. There was profound sadness there, but absolutely no surrender.
Yuna whispered something softly.
The memory was too faint for him to catch the words. He moved closer in the light.
Her voice became clearer.
"If you’re seeing this..."
She paused, taking a shaky breath.
"...then I couldn’t finish what I started."
Kōya’s breath caught in his throat.
Yuna smiled, a beautiful, heartbreaking expression.
"But that’s okay."
The crystal glowed brilliantly.
"I’ve already left absolutely everything I could."
The light began to swallow her form.
"I hope you use it well."
The memory began to collapse rapidly.
Kōya reached desperately toward her fading image. "Yuna!"
She looked at him.
For one impossible, final moment, she seemed to truly see him. Not the younger Kōya from her memories. Him. The Kōya standing inside the ruined Lair, standing inside the crystal’s inheritance.
Her expression softened completely.
"Keep going."
The world shattered.
Kōya snapped his eyes open.
The ruined, flooded Hero’s Lair returned all at once. Freezing rain. Rolling thunder. Broken stone. The scent of blood.
His knees nearly buckled under the sudden return of gravity. He caught himself, planting his boots firmly on the wet stone.
His left hand was still pressed flat against the now-dark crystal resting on the altar.
The massive crystal that had once held years of Yuna’s immense Heroic Mana was entirely empty. Every microscopic trace of its stored power had entered him.
Kōya breathed slowly and steadily.
His right side burned violently with suffocating Demonic Mana.
His left side carried the immense, radiant weight of Yuna’s Heroic legacy.
For several long seconds, he said absolutely nothing.
Across the ruined chamber, Zeref stared at him in absolute silence.
The Demon Peer had not moved an inch. His arrogant expression had changed into something resembling dread. He had watched the entire transfer. He had physically felt the immense Heroic Mana disappear completely from the crystal.
And now, he could feel it radiating directly inside Kōya.
But there was something else.
Kōya slowly lifted his head. His dark eyes were wet. He wiped the tears away with the back of his scarred hand.
Zeref narrowed his eyes. "You saw her."
Kōya didn’t answer.
"You saw Yuna."
Kōya slowly stood up straight.
The heavy Hero Sword lay nearby on the stone floor. He reached down for it.
The instant his fingers touched the hilt, blinding golden Heroic light spread along the entire length of the blade.
The sword resonated perfectly, recognizing the massive power now flowing through him.
Kōya looked down at the glowing weapon. Then, he looked up at Zeref.
"I remember absolutely everything."
Zeref’s expression hardened.
Kōya casually picked up the Hero Sword.
His right side remained wrapped in a suffocating, violet-black Demonic Aura.
His left side glowed brilliantly with pure, golden Heroic Power.
Neither disappeared. Neither consumed the other. They remained distinctly separate. But for the very first time, they moved in perfect synchronization, without tearing his physical body apart.
Kōya tightened his grip on the hilt.
Yuna’s precious memories were still echoing loudly inside him. Her voice remained a beacon in his mind.
Keep going.
He looked past the Demon Peer, toward the dark direction where Mizuki had been taken.
His father’s final request returned to him.
Save your mother. Bring her home.
Kōya took one heavy, deliberate step forward.
Zeref roared and raised Stormfront. Blinding lightning violently exploded through the ruined Lair, shattering the remaining pillars.
The battle was not over.
But something fundamental had changed.
Kōya no longer stood there carrying only his own lonely, inherited power. He carried years of Yuna’s desperate preparation. Years of her unyielding determination. Years of her profound love.
And everything she had chosen to leave behind.
He raised the Hero Sword high.
Blinding golden light flashed brilliantly across the ruined chamber, battling the storm.
Zeref’s eyes narrowed into slits. "So, that is what she left you. Power."
Kōya looked directly into the demon’s eyes.
"No." His voice was incredibly quiet, yet it cut perfectly through the thunder. "She left me a reason to keep going."
Blinding lightning crashed violently between them.
And Kōya stepped directly into the storm.
