Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child
Chapter 53: The Stormblade’s Domain
Kōya bared his teeth, blood dripping from his lip. "Not yet."
He forced the sphere to compress one final time.
Then, he detonated it outward.
The explosion shattered the lightning spear. The resulting shockwave tore through the chamber, obliterating statues and blowing out the remaining walls.
Kōya was thrown backward by the backlash. He crashed through a heavy stone railing, tumbled through the air, and landed hard on a lower, ruined platform.
He lay there, his chest rising and falling in ragged gasps. He slowly lifted his right hand. The Demonic Aura burning around it had thinned significantly.
That single counter-attack had consumed far too much of his core reserves.
High above, Zeref landed on the edge of an intact tower. His massive wings folded neatly behind his back. He looked down at the battered boy.
"You spent that much of your core power just to stop a single attack?"
Kōya painfully pushed himself upright, leaning heavily on the Hero Sword. He wiped the blood from his chin. "I stopped it."
Zeref glared at the defiance.
Kōya offered a faint, exhausted smile. "That’s enough for me."
The Demon Peer disappeared.
Kōya’s smile vanished. He scanned the ruined space.
Nothing. The rain poured through the hole in the roof.
A jagged blade flashed from his immediate left blind spot.
Kōya snapped the Hero Sword up, blocking on pure instinct.
Lightning erupted from the impact. Kōya twisted his body away to absorb the shock, but Zeref was too fast. The demon stepped inside the guard and drove an armored knee directly into Kōya’s ribs.
Crack.
Kōya flew sideways off the platform. As he fell, he desperately reached out, his scarred hand catching a thick, dangling iron chain.
The rusted chain groaned, then snapped under his sudden weight.
He fell further. His fingers caught the jagged edge of a lower stone platform.
Zeref descended immediately, following the blood in the water.
Kōya pulled himself up over the ledge.
The crackling Lightning Sword came crashing down in a lethal overhead strike.
Kōya raised his golden blade horizontally to block.
The impact cratered the stone beneath Kōya’s knees.
Zeref didn’t pull back. He pressed harder, leaning his massive weight into the bind. Kōya’s boots sank agonizingly deeper into the fracturing floor.
Kōya released his right hand from the hilt and slammed his bare palm directly into the cracked ground.
Demonic Aura detonated point-blank beneath the masonry.
The entire section of the floor shattered. Jagged stones shot upward.
Zeref jumped backward to avoid the blast. Several heavy fragments of stone flew toward his face.
He cut through the first. The second. The third.
A fourth, smaller stone slipped past his guard, striking his shoulder.
A thin line of dark blood appeared on his armor.
Zeref stopped, looking down at the minor wound. A flicker of genuine shock crossed his ancient features.
Kōya saw the microscopic opening.
He moved.
One step. Two. He launched himself from the broken floor, the Hero Sword raised high in his left hand.
Zeref lifted his blade to parry.
Kōya didn’t commit. He changed direction in mid-air. Suffocating Demonic Aura wrapped around his right side, instantly halting his forward momentum. He spun rapidly on a dime.
The heavy Hero Sword swept horizontally across Zeref’s exposed side.
Zeref twisted his torso with impossible speed. The holy blade missed his physical body by a fraction of a millimeter.
It cut cleanly through his heavy, dark cloak. A very thin line of blood appeared across the demon’s ribs.
Kōya landed a few paces away.
Zeref stood still, staring down at the shallow, bleeding wound on his side.
Neither warrior spoke. The freezing rain fell steadily between them, washing the blood from the stone.
Zeref looked profoundly interested. The arrogant boredom had vanished.
"You can actually hurt me."
Kōya raised his glowing sword, settling into his stance. "I noticed."
Zeref reached down and touched the blood with his fingertips, examining the color. He looked up at Kōya. "You learn quickly, boy."
Kōya’s expression remained perfectly cold. "I do not have the luxury of time to learn slowly."
Zeref laughed. A single appreciative bark.
A massive bolt of lightning struck the tall tower directly beside him. He vanished seamlessly into the blinding flash.
Kōya looked up, tracking the architecture.
The Demon Peer was gone.
Thunder rolled across the ruined Lair.
Kōya lowered his sword, his breathing growing heavier. His arms ached with a deep, systemic fatigue. His golden Heroic reserves were draining fast. The ancient Hero Sword channeled devastating power, but every major holy attack demanded an enormous toll.
His Demonic power was also dropping dangerously low.
Zeref had barely begun using his full ability.
If this engagement continued as a straightforward battle of endurance, Kōya would mathematically lose.
He needed another tactical option.
He analyzed his surroundings, taking in the entire scope of the Lair. The towering stone pillars. The metal conductors embedded in the walls. The ruined balconies. The headless statues. The dangling chains. The raging storm above.
Everything.
Another bolt of lightning struck a different conductor on the far wall.
Kōya noticed the underlying architectural pattern.
The metal conductors connected in an intricate web. Zeref wasn’t simply utilizing the natural storm above for power. He actively used the architecture of the Lair itself to seamlessly project his lightning across the battlefield.
Kōya looked toward a load-bearing stone support column near the center of the hall.
He sprinted directly toward it.
Zeref materialized in the air high above him. Lethal lightning descended in a blinding curtain.
Kōya swung the Hero Sword with devastating force, cutting cleanly through the thick stone column.
The massive structure broke. A terrifying section of the stone ceiling collapsed between them, throwing up a massive cloud of dust and debris.
Zeref’s descending lightning struck the falling debris, shattering it harmlessly into gravel.
Kōya used the chaos to jump through the newly created opening in the ruins. The debris masked his trajectory.
He landed smoothly on another elevated platform. Zeref emerged gracefully from the thick smoke, searching for his target.
Kōya immediately cut through another support pillar. Then another.
He surgically removed specific, crucial pathways, isolating the metal conductors Zeref relied on.
Zeref realized the tactic and flew toward him to stop the demolition.
Kōya moved. Zeref changed direction to intercept. Kōya redirected his path, forcing the Demon Peer toward a heavily obstructed corridor.
Zeref recognized the shifting pattern. "You are trying to systematically limit my aerial movement."
Kōya didn’t waste breath answering. He jumped.
Zeref flew upward to cut off the arc.
Kōya had expected the counter. He slammed his heavy boot against a passing wall and launched himself entirely sideways, altering his trajectory by ninety degrees.
Zeref changed his altitude, dropping to meet him.
Kōya redirected again, bouncing off a broken statue.
The Demon Peer stopped in mid-air. His massive wings beat once, and he rose almost perfectly vertically, bypassing Kōya’s intricate web of calculated movements.
Kōya’s mathematical prediction failed.
Zeref came crashing down from a blind angle.
The crackling Lightning Sword struck Kōya forcefully on the right shoulder.
Blood sprayed across the stone.
Kōya crashed into a standing pillar, the impact driving the air from his lungs. The kinetic shock nearly knocked the heavy Hero Sword from his numb fingers. He managed to catch the hilt by the very edge.
Zeref hovered in the air directly above him, his sword crackling.
"You are trying to force predictability onto this battlefield," Zeref sneered. Blinding lightning gathered around his dark sword. "I will not allow you that luxury."
He fired point-blank.
Kōya threw himself into a desperate roll.
The condensed lightning struck the thick stone pillar, obliterating it.
Kōya jumped through the smoking opening. Another massive bolt followed instantly, scorching his heel. He jumped again. Another blast.
The Lair shook with every impact. Zeref was now actively destroying the very architecture Kōya relied on for mobility.
Kōya landed heavily, sliding behind a ruined altar. His breathing was ragged, his chest heaving. Blood ran freely down his arm from the deep wound on his shoulder.
He looked around the ruined, burning battlefield.
Then, he heard it.
A sound buried beneath the deafening roar of the thunder.
A faint, rhythmic pulse.
Once.
Kōya froze.
Again.
A distant, subtle vibration traveling through the ancient stone floor. A profoundly familiar pulse cut through the chaos.
He opened his eyes wide.
He knew that exact feeling. He had felt that precise arcane signature before. At the Academy training grounds. In the practice sword. In the quiet, fleeting moments when Yuna had stood shoulder-to-shoulder beside him.
The memory was so faint, so deeply buried beneath his grief, that he almost dismissed it as a hallucination born of blood loss.
But the rhythmic pulse came again. Stronger this time.
Kōya turned his head, looking past the immediate battlefield toward the deepest inner section of the ruined Lair.
There.
Hidden behind layers of ruined stone and debris.
A faint, pulsing blue light.
His pulse skipped.
"Yuna..."
The name escaped his cracked lips.
Zeref, hovering above the altar, heard it clearly. His expression changed.
