Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Chapter 52: Zeref, the Lightning Demon Peer

  • Next Chapter

The corrupted Hero’s Lair trembled beneath the raging storm.

Freezing rain poured through the shattered sections of the vaulted ceiling, running in dark rivers down the white stone walls that had once belonged to the world’s legendary champions. Searing blue lightning flashed beyond the broken towers, illuminating the cavernous central chamber in strobe-like bursts.

Kōya stood balanced in the center of the apocalypse.

He held the Hero Sword steady in his left hand, its golden light humming a holy resonance. Thick, violet-black Demonic Aura curled around his right arm, devouring the rain that dared to touch it.

Across the ruined hall stood the architect of his misery.

The Demon Peer.

Zeref. The Lightning Sword.

Suspended between thunderclaps, neither warrior moved. The tension in the massive chamber was suffocating.

Kōya kept his gaze fixed on the crackling, stolen weapon in the demon’s hand.

"Mizuki." The name barely carried over the storm. Kōya tightened his grip on the golden hilt. "Where is my mother?"

Zeref did not answer. His calculating gaze remained locked on the Hero Sword resting in the boy’s left hand.

The exact legendary blade that had once belonged to Seiya. A holy relic whose presence should have been biologically impossible in the hands of a boy radiating such dense Demonic Aura.

Zeref scrutinized the weapon. "Where did you get that sword?"

Kōya’s expression hardened into absolute stone. "My father left it for me."

A subtle shift crossed Zeref’s face. "Your father." He evaluated the lines of Kōya’s jaw. "Seiya."

Kōya said nothing. The silence served as his weapon.

Zeref lowered the crackling tip of the Lightning Sword until it rested against the slick stone floor, sending sparks dancing across the puddles. "So, the great Hero is finally dead."

He spoke the words casually, his attention briefly shifting toward the storm outside.

Something cold and jagged moved through Kōya’s chest. The memory surfaced. The abandoned house. The untouched final meal. His dying father’s heavy, scarred hand resting against his head. The shallow, muddy grave dug beneath the freezing rain.

And the final request Seiya had made with his dying breath.

Save your mother. Bring her home.

Kōya raised the Hero Sword, aiming the tip directly at Zeref’s throat. "He died protecting the people he loved." His voice dropped into a sub-zero register. "And I am going to finish exactly what he started."

Zeref smiled, the expression of a predator confirming a piece of tactical intelligence.

"You really are his son."

Kōya’s posture stiffened. "Tell me where she is."

Zeref’s massive, leathery wings stretched wide. The sudden movement sent a spray of collected rainwater slashing across the stone floor.

"You walked all the way here," Zeref noted, his voice carrying effortlessly.

Lightning flashed behind him, casting his monstrous shadow across the hall.

"You crossed the eastern forest alone." Another flash. "You slaughtered my vanguard guarding the route." His long fingers tightened around the grip of the Lightning Sword. "And now, against all logical probability, you stand inside a sacred place where Heroes once prepared for global war."

The erratic blue lightning crawling along his blade intensified, hissing.

"Yet, despite everything you have seen today, you still foolishly think this is simply a matter of finding your mother."

Kōya lowered his center of gravity into a rooted stance. "I do not care what this place is." His suffocating Demonic Aura spread across the flooded floorboards, turning the water black. "I will tear through everything between us if I have to."

Zeref’s clinical smile vanished.

"Then come."

He vanished.

Kōya snapped the Hero Sword upward in a desperate parry.

CLANG!

The kinetic impact detonated through the cavernous chamber.

Kōya’s heavy boots slid backward across the slick stone, carving grooves into the floor. The bones in his arms shook under the strain.

Zeref had materialized directly in front of him, his crackling Lightning Sword pressed flush against the flat of the golden blade.

For one suspended moment, the two legendary weapons remained deadlocked.

Searing blue lightning crawled across Zeref’s dark sword. Kōya gritted his teeth as the high-voltage electricity traveled through the holy steel and struck his left arm. His muscles involuntarily tightened.

He twisted his wrist, dropping his shoulder to break the bind. The blades separated with a screech of grinding metal.

Zeref immediately swung a devastating horizontal arc.

Kōya parried perfectly.

Another blistering strike aimed at his ribs. Kōya blocked, the force rattling his teeth.

A third strike. Kōya recognized the feint and stepped laterally. The Lightning Sword cut through the empty air inches beside his face, the ozone burning his cheek.

Kōya countered. He stepped inside the guard. The Hero Sword flashed a brilliant gold in a lethal upward slash.

Zeref tilted his upper body backward with unnatural flexibility. The golden edge of the holy sword passed within a fraction of an inch of his armored chest, slicing only the rain.

Zeref stepped away, re-establishing tactical distance.

Kōya followed him.

Their blades collided again. Then again. A blistering exchange. The ruined chamber filled with the deafening sound of shattering steel and rolling thunder.

Kōya’s breathing remained measured. His brilliant mind actively studied Zeref’s mechanics.

The Demon Peer’s swordsmanship differed fundamentally from the feral demons and assassins outside. He wasted no motion and made no theatrical swings. Every movement, every shift in weight, possessed a calculated purpose. Every strike deliberately forced Kōya into a compromised physical position.

Every time Kōya adapted his footwork, Zeref flawlessly changed the angle of attack.

Kōya moved to block a downward strike. As the blades met, Zeref released a localized explosion of lightning directly from the point of contact.

The trap sprang. Kōya released his right hand from the long hilt, throwing his body sideways to avoid the blast.

The concentrated lightning tore through the space he had just occupied, striking the stone wall behind him.

Kōya landed heavily on one knee, sliding through the puddles. He looked back over his shoulder. A smoking, spider-webbed crack stretched across the ancient stone wall.

The sword was not the demon’s only primary weapon.

Zeref materialized directly above him.

Kōya looked up. The Demon Peer’s massive wings extended fully, allowing him to hover effortlessly beneath the shattered ceiling.

The difference between fighting a high-tier demon and fighting a true Demon Peer became clear.

Ordinary variants possessed raw strength. Some possessed blistering speed. Others wielded high-tier destructive magic.

Zeref was a complete combatant, combining centuries of battle experience with overwhelming physical power, devastating elemental magic, flawless weapon mastery, and aerial superiority.

He combined all of those elements seamlessly without a single hesitation.

Zeref folded his wings and plummeted in a blinding streak.

Kōya threw himself into a desperate roll.

The Lightning Sword struck the stone floor exactly where Kōya’s knee had rested.

BOOM!

The ancient stone exploded outward. Kōya used the kinetic force of the blast wave to launch himself backward, flipping to his feet.

Zeref didn’t pursue on the ground. His massive wings snapped open with a sharp crack, catching the air. He rose back into the sky.

Kōya watched him climb. The physical distance between them rapidly grew.

Then, Zeref disappeared into the thick darkness above the ruined, vaulted ceiling.

Kōya scanned the upper shadows. Nothing. Only the pouring rain and rolling thunder.

The darkness flashed a brilliant blue.

Zeref descended at terminal velocity.

Kōya moved on pure instinct.

The Lightning Sword crashed into the floor, obliterating several large tiles.

Kōya ran.

He didn’t run away from the engagement. He sprinted directly toward a ruined stone support pillar. He planted one heavy boot firmly against the vertical stone.

His violet-black Demonic Aura surged into his right leg.

He pushed off the pillar with bone-shattering force. His body launched sideways, defying gravity. He sailed through the air and landed perfectly on an elevated stone balcony above the flooded floor.

Zeref turned effortlessly in the air, tracking the movement.

Kōya didn’t stop. He jumped again. A ruined, headless statue stood ahead. He landed flawlessly on its broad stone shoulder. Pushed off. Caught the jagged edge of a shattered stone archway with his free hand. Swung his momentum. Turned. Launched himself cleanly toward a higher platform.

Zeref hovered, watching the maneuver.

The Demon Peer had expected Kōya to remain grounded, fighting a defensive battle from the floor. Instead, the boy utilized the entire three-dimensional architecture of the massive Lair. Walls. Pillars. Balconies. Statues. Broken walkways. Dangling iron chains.

Every piece of ruined architecture became another localized anchor point from which Kōya could unpredictably change his trajectory.

He built a mathematical, kinetic path through the air.

Zeref scowled in irritation.

Kōya vaulted from a high balcony, launching himself across the open chamber.

Zeref descended on an intercept vector.

Kōya twisted his body and kicked off the side of a passing stone tower. His trajectory changed instantly, dropping his altitude. ℯℯ𝘭.

Zeref passed harmlessly inches beneath him.

Kōya turned flawlessly mid-air. A violet-black Demonic Aura wrapped around his right side, creating localized drag. He spun, redirecting his own momentum.

He brought the heavy Hero Sword crashing down.

Zeref raised his Lightning Sword in a reverse grip to block.

CLANG!

The weapons collided mid-air. Zeref’s massive wings beat hard against the air pressure, stabilizing his position. The kinetic rebound forced Kōya backward, sending him into a controlled fall.

As Kōya landed in a crouch on a narrow stone platform below, his tactical mind hummed. He had just learned a vital piece of intelligence.

Zeref’s flight granted absolute three-dimensional freedom, yet it also gave Kōya something strictly governed by physics to mathematically predict.

Zeref pushed away from the brief clash, rising higher.

Kōya readied his stance, tracking the vector.

Zeref climbed higher. Up toward the shattered roof. The raging storm swallowed him completely.

Kōya stared upward, his grip tightening.

A low rumble moved through the heavy storm clouds. The sky directly above the ruined Lair tightened, the atmospheric pressure dropping sickeningly.

Chaotic arcs of lightning gathered around Zeref’s hovering silhouette.

The old stone towers of the Lair reacted. The ancient metal conductors deeply embedded within the architecture glowed with residual electrical energy.

The scale of the trap became clear. The storm outside was more than a natural weather event. The Lair itself actively fed the tempest. Kōya could only guess whether the ancient structure had been designed for a purpose like this.

High above, Zeref raised his Lightning Sword toward the heavens. Raw lightning crawled eagerly along its length.

The thick black clouds tore open.

A blinding bolt descended from the sky. It struck the very tip of Zeref’s raised blade with perfect precision.

For one agonizing instant, the world turned a featureless white.

Kōya shielded his vision.

Zeref pointed the supercharged sword downward, locking his gaze on the boy.

A devastating spear of compressed lightning formed around the blade, a concentrated lance of thunder.

Kōya planted his boots firmly into the stone platform.

Viscous violet-black Demonic Aura erupted from his right side in a massive column. He drew the chaotic energy sharply inward.

He compressed it.

His right hand clenched into a tight claw. The dark aura pooling around his palm became incredibly dense.

The surrounding rain bent around the localized gravity well. Loose stone fragments near his boots began to levitate.

Kōya forced even more Demonic Aura into the compressed sphere. The veins in his arm bulged, and his muscles shook under the catastrophic strain.

The density threatened to tear his magical pathways apart, but he needed that critical mass to meet the attack head-on.

Zeref released the spear.

The lightning descended with the roar of a dying god.

Kōya thrust his right hand forward.

The hyper-compressed Demonic sphere launched upward on a flawless intercept trajectory.

The two attacks collided in the dead center of the chamber.

Thunder erupted.

The kinetic impact shook the entire foundation of the ancient Hero’s Lair.

Searing blue lightning collided brutally with the dense, crushing violet-black gravity of the Demonic energy.

The stone platform cracked beneath Kōya’s boots. He began sliding backward, his heels carving deep trenches into the masonry.

He pushed harder, roaring against the blinding light. His arms trembled.

The Demonic sphere began losing structural integrity under the overwhelming electrical pressure. The lightning spear continued relentlessly driving downward, inches away from breaking through.
