Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child

Chapter 50: The Hero’s Lair

  • Next Chapter

The wounded demon’s final, gasping words remained anchored in Kōya’s mind long after the creature stopped breathing entirely.

The Hero’s...

The rest of the sentence never came.

The mangled body of the scout lay motionless among the heavy roots and broken branches, its thick black blood slowly, inevitably disappearing into the damp, thirsty earth.

Kōya stood silently over the corpse for several seconds.

His scarred fingers slowly tightened around the hilt of the Hero Sword resting over his shoulder.

The Stormblade had taken the main demonic force east, toward the fortress hidden in the mountains. Toward the exact place where Mizuki had been taken in chains.

His mother was somewhere ahead in the dark.

That was the only tactical variable that mattered now.

Kōya turned away from the cooling corpse. The forest stretched endlessly before him, an ocean of black timber.

Dark. Dense. Unnaturally quiet.

But beneath that oppressive quietness, something else remained buried in the atmosphere.

Lightning.

He could feel it crawling across his skin. A faint residual arcane pressure lingered in the damp air, almost impossible to notice beneath the ordinary ambient mana of the ancient forest. Yet, Kōya’s senses had become terrifyingly sharper after awakening his Heroic Aura. The holy weapon acted as an amplifier for the power already inside him.

He closed his eyes, trusting his dual senses.

There.

A thin, vibrating thread of volatile mana. Then another, intersecting it.

Lightning Mana.

The energy was perfectly controlled. Brutally deliberate.

Kōya opened his eyes, the violet-black void of his right iris burning. "So, you are arrogant enough to leave a trail."

He began walking.

The eastern forest swallowed him completely. The further he pushed through the dense underbrush, the more violated the ancient trees became.

At first, he only noticed a few scorched branches lying in the mud. Then entire trunks appeared violently blackened. Some had been split entirely from the inside out by explosive force. Others had been cleanly melted along one side, their ancient bark turned into a smooth, glass-like black material by unimaginable heat.

Kōya stopped beside one particularly enormous silverwood tree.

A deep, perfectly straight, charred line ran from the high crown all the way down into the exposed roots.

He reached out and placed his bare palm flat against the scorched wood.

A faint, biting electrical sensation immediately traveled up his hand, numbing his fingertips.

His eyes narrowed in assessment. "This isn’t ordinary, atmospheric lightning."

Lightning released naturally during a storm would spread unpredictably, seeking the path of least resistance to ground itself. This strike had absolute direction. Pure, lethal purpose. The volatile mana had been massively compressed before being unleashed.

Someone had controlled it. Someone terrifyingly powerful.

Kōya removed his hand from the glassed bark.

"The Stormblade."

He continued aggressively east.

Every few dozen steps, another violent scar appeared in the forest. A shattered branch. A completely burned boulder. A patch of earth where a lightning strike had hit hard enough to leave a shallow, smoking crater.

The trail would not be obvious to an ordinary traveler or mercenary. But Kōya was not following muddy footprints. He was tracking the residual arrogance left behind by the monster who had created them.

And buried deeply beneath the ozone scent of the lightning...

There was something else. A second, much weaker presence.

Kōya slowed his pace. He looked down at the forest floor.

The damp ground had been heavily disturbed. Not by the chaotic footwork of a battle, but by dragging, exhausted movement. Something heavy had been pulled aggressively across the soft soil.

He crouched low and gently brushed aside the damp, dead leaves.

A faint, desperate thread of familiar mana remained trapped in the mud.

His expression changed instantly, the cold tactical mask slipping. He knew that exact feeling.

"Mom..."

The word escaped him quietly, catching in his throat.

He touched the ground again, letting the mana wash over his fingers. The heavy Hero Sword strapped across his back gave a faint, resonant pulse in response to the holy signature, vibrating with his left side.

Kōya remained perfectly still. The residual mana was incredibly weak, fading fast, but unmistakable.

Mizuki had passed through this exact spot. Recently.

He stood up, his jaw set. His dark eyes moved toward the east. The forest seemed darker and far more hostile in that direction.

"Wait for me."

He started walking again.

His measured pace quickly became faster. Then faster still. Kōya moved through the dense, dark trees like a phantom. He didn’t bother carefully avoiding the thorny branches anymore. When one blocked his direct path, he effortlessly cut it away with his dagger. When a massive fallen trunk stood in his way, he vaulted entirely over it. When the rocky terrain became steep, he climbed without breaking his rhythm.

The residual lightning trail grew significantly stronger.

The horrific physical evidence of an entire captive group followed soon after.

Shattered wooden wagon wheels. Discarded fragments of bloody rope. Pieces of broken black demon armor. Pools of old, congealed blood soaking into the moss.

Small scraps of torn cloth snagged on thorns.

Kōya stopped and picked one up from a bush.

Blue.

His scarred fingers tightened around the fabric. He knew that specific color. He had seen it a thousand times in his childhood. His mother’s clothing.

He closed his eyes tightly for a moment, steadying his breathing. The agonizing memory of Seiya’s final, gasping words returned, echoing relentlessly in his skull.

Save your mother. Bring her home.

Kōya opened his eyes, staring at the blue fabric. "I will."

The ancient forest became absolutely, terrifyingly silent.

It was not a peaceful quiet. It was the heavy emptiness of a graveyard.

Kōya stopped in his tracks.

There were no birds calling. No insects buzzing in the underbrush. No wind rustling the high canopy. There was only the distant, erratic crackle of residual electricity.

He looked ahead.

A narrow, treacherous valley appeared through the mist, situated between two enormous, sheer cliffs. Violent lightning scars covered the stone faces on both sides, plunging deep into the valley.

Kōya stepped cautiously inside the perimeter.

The moment he crossed the threshold, his expression shifted.

There had been a battle here. A massive, apocalyptic engagement.

Hundreds of ancient trees had been violently ripped from the ground. Several massive stone boulders had been sliced perfectly, cleanly in half. The damp earth had been deeply scorched in long, chaotic, winding patterns. Deep, catastrophic sword marks crossed the bedrock.

Kōya walked slowly through the devastation.

He recognized the specific cuts and the heavy, lingering mana.

His father’s.

A faint, desperate trace of pure Heroic Mana remained deeply embedded in the torn soil.

Kōya knelt in the mud. He placed his bare hand directly against the scarred earth. Faint, golden light immediately flickered to life beneath his fingers, answering his touch as the Heroic Aura within him resonated with the remnants.

He held still.

"Father..."

For one brief, agonizing moment, he could almost imagine the man standing there.

Seiya. Completely alone. Surrounded by a sea of elite demons. Bleeding heavily from a dozen fatal wounds. Exhausted beyond human comprehension.

Still fighting.

Kōya’s eyes lowered to the mud.

He knew his father had fought these monsters. He knew Mizuki had been used as cruel leverage against him. But physically seeing the catastrophic evidence of the struggle made the horrific truth so much heavier.

Seiya had not simply surrendered or disappeared quietly into the dark. He had fought like a cornered god until his physical vessel could fight no longer. And somewhere during the absolute chaos of that battle, Mizuki had been dragged away.

Kōya stood up. His left hand moved over his shoulder, gripping the hilt of the Hero Sword.

The ancient weapon felt strangely, comfortingly warm against his palm.

"You fought here," Kōya whispered to the blade.

He looked toward the looming eastern mountains.

"And she was taken from here."

The Hero Sword gave another faint, validating pulse of golden light.

Kōya started walking.

The valley narrowed sharply. Then, the dense trees finally began to thin out.

Something incredibly ancient appeared, jutting out from beneath the massive tree roots.

Carved stone.

Kōya stopped.

A massive, sweeping staircase was half-buried beneath the forest floor. Most of the ancient stone had collapsed or eroded, but enough of the grand architecture remained to reveal that an enormous structure lay just below the ridge.

He stepped closer, examining the masonry.

The white stone was covered with intricate, glowing symbols. Ancient, holy symbols.

Kōya recognized some of the script. The Heroic crest. He had seen similar, dormant markings etched near the protected domain immediately beyond the Bridge of Hope.

But this place felt entirely different.

The Fortress had functioned as a sanctuary, built meticulously to protect terrified people.

This felt like something else entirely.

Kōya brushed a thick layer of damp moss away from one of the massive standing stones.

There was a faded, intricate image carved beneath it. A group of ancient Heroes standing proudly before a massive, towering structure. One figure carried a broad sword. Another held a tall staff. Another stood vigil with a longbow.

The finer details had been erased by centuries of rain and time. But the message remained absolutely clear.

This place had once belonged to the Heroes of the old world.

Kōya looked farther ahead up the overgrown path.

Colossal ancient stone pillars rose from the encroaching forest. Broken white walls emerged from the earth. Massive, half-buried statues of forgotten champions stood silent vigil between the silverwood trees.

Some of the statues had been violently destroyed by blunt force. Others had been cruelly defaced with dark, demonic runes.

One grand statue of a kneeling swordsman had thick, black iron chains wrapped tightly around its stone neck.

Kōya stared at the desecration.

"Why would the demonic high command actively occupy an ancient Hero site?"

He didn’t have the tactical answer. But he had a sinking feeling he was about to find out.

He followed the ruined old road upward.

The path gradually widened. The ancient paving stones beneath his boots became less damaged the higher he climbed.

Then, he felt it.

A strange, fleeting sensation. A faint, distant pulse of ambient lightning mana.

Kōya stopped in his tracks.

His left hand moved instinctively toward the hilt of the Hero Sword.

The faint pulse came again. For only an instant.

It was not aggressively threatening. It was not a warning.

It was...

Familiar.

Kōya’s eyes widened slightly in confusion.

He couldn’t explain the sensation. There was something buried deep within that specific electrical signature that reminded his subconscious of someone.

Someone he had just lost.

"Yuna?" he whispered into the empty air.
