Demon Lord reborn as The Hero's Child
Chapter 49: The Hero’s Graveyard
He placed the jagged armor fragment securely inside the inner pocket of his heavy coat.
Then he turned back toward the huddled prisoners.
"You need to leave this valley."
The woman holding the small child looked up at him, her eyes hollow. "Where do we go?"
"Anywhere west. Keep moving until you cross the river."
"And you?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Kōya looked past them, his gaze locking onto the dark silhouette of the eastern mountains. "I am going after them."
The older man stared at him in disbelief. "Boy, there are hundreds of elite demons in that marching column. It’s an entire army."
Kōya’s expression did not change an inch. He was beyond the concept of fear.
"My father died in the mud because they used someone he loved against him." He turned his back on the survivors. "I will not make that same mistake."
The prisoners did not argue. They gathered their meager strength and began limping out of the valley.
Kōya stood in the mud, watching until the very last of them disappeared safely into the tree line.
Only then did he turn his attention back toward the abandoned camp.
Something bothered his analytical mind. The demons had evacuated far too cleanly. There were no discarded supplies. No broken weapons left behind. No heavy, discarded equipment slowing them down. Nothing tactically useful remained.
They had meticulously packed everything of value.
Kōya closed his eyes.
His Demonic senses spilled outward, uncoiling like a heavy serpent. The physical reality of the forest changed. He felt the deep roots moving blindly beneath the soil. The frantic scurry of insects in the rot. The distant, panicked heartbeat of wild animals fleeing the region.
And buried beneath it all, humming like a live wire...
Lightning.
A thin, vibrating, continuous trail of volatile elemental mana stretched relentlessly toward the east, burned into the atmosphere.
Kōya opened his eyes, which were flashing with violet light.
"Found you."
He broke into a run.
His body accelerated through the dense forest, propelled by monstrous physical strength. Heavy branches snapped violently behind him as he tore through the underbrush. The towering mountains grew steadily larger on the horizon. He vaulted across a rushing river, then splashed through another, never losing the faint, ozone-scented trail.
The Lightning Sword possessed too much raw power to be completely hidden; it had left a residual signature his demonic senses could track blind.
Then, Kōya stopped dead.
Smoke. Thick, oily black smoke rose lazily beyond the next ridge of trees.
He approached the crest silently, moving like a ghost.
Another staging camp waited in the valley below. This one was vastly larger, designed for a full military battalion. It was heavily fortified with spiked wooden palisades and watchtowers.
And it was completely empty.
Kōya descended into the stronghold.
Dozens of deep, fresh footprints covered the churned mud. The main demonic force had gathered here very recently to regroup.
Then, he saw the platform.
A raised, gruesome wooden structure stood in the exact center of the camp. Heavy, rusted iron chains were securely bolted deep into its timbers.
Kōya walked slowly toward it. His confident pace slowed to a hesitant crawl.
One of the thick chains was heavily stained with drying blood.
His scarred hand hovered over the iron links.
"Mizuki..."
He pressed his fingers against the cold metal, searching for a trace.
Nothing. No psychic memory flashed. No useful mana trail lingered in the blood.
But as he pulled his hand away, he noticed something caught beneath the heavy links.
A small, torn piece of soft blue cloth.
Kōya carefully, almost reverently, pulled it free from the iron. He stared down at the fabric resting in his palm.
He knew that exact shade of color. He had seen his mother wear that dress a hundred times in the safety of their village.
His fingers slowly closed around the cloth, crushing it.
"They were holding her right here." His voice dropped into a terrifying, hollow whisper. "But where did they take her next?"
A dry twig snapped sharply in the shadows directly behind him.
Kōya spun on his heel, his posture dropping into a combat stance.
Nothing. The camp appeared empty.
His right hand moved smoothly toward the hilt of the borrowed dagger strapped at his side.
Then came another sound.
Footsteps. Incredibly slow. Uneven. Dragging heavily through the mud.
One. Two. Three.
A lone demon stumbled blindly from the tree line. It wore the blackened, scorched armor of the Lightning Demon’s elite vanguard. Its chest plate had been brutally torn open by a massive blade, and thick black blood poured freely between its clutching fingers.
It collapsed heavily onto its knees in the mud, gasping for air.
Kōya approached the dying creature, his boots making no sound.
"Where is the marching column going?"
The demon looked up, coughing blood. Its red eyes widened in sheer, primal panic when it registered the suffocating weight of Kōya’s aura.
"You..."
Kōya seized the creature by its armored collar, his grip like a steel vise, hauling it half off the ground.
"Where is the Demon Peer with the Lightning Sword?"
The scout gave a weak, bubbling laugh, blood spilling down its chin. "You honestly think a boy can..."
Absolute darkness erupted around Kōya.
The crushing atmospheric pressure of his Demonic Aura drove the scout face-first into the mud, burying its snout in the dirt.
"Answer me," Kōya commanded, his voice devoid of mercy.
The scout’s mocking laughter evaporated into terror. "The Stormblade..." He coughed, struggling to breathe under the psychic weight. "He took the main force... moved the prisoner..."
Kōya tightened his grip, hoisting the demon higher. "Where?"
The demon’s lips curled into a bloody sneer. "He went to..." Its voice weakened, rattling in its ruined chest. "The Hero’s..."
Its red eyes rolled back, going completely blank. The heavy body went limp in Kōya’s grasp.
Kōya released the collar. The corpse fell heavily back into the mud with a wet thud.
He stood there silently in the empty camp, the dying words echoing in his mind.
The Hero’s...
His dark eyes moved slowly toward the towering eastern mountains, piecing the geography together.
Then, horrific understanding struck him.
"The Hero’s Graveyard."
The words left his mouth quietly, carrying the weight of blasphemy.
The legendary place where the greatest Heroes of the old world had been laid to rest. The sacred ground of the warriors who had once fought the ancient Demon Lords to a standstill. The revered people whose names and deeds had survived across generations.
Kōya remembered hearing the stories as a child. The Hero’s Graveyard was not a military fortress. It was a serene resting place. A vast, quiet monument meant to honor the dead.
And the Stormblade had taken a demonic army there.
But why?
Kōya’s gaze hardened into glacial ice.
Then Kōya understood.
The Hero’s Graveyard itself was not a fortress.
It was sacred ground.
The final resting place of the legendary Heroes who had once fought the ancient Demon Lords. But the Demon Peer had taken control of the area. And he had built a castle there.
Kōya’s expression hardened.
"He built a castle..."
Not a temporary camp.
Not a military shelter.
A permanent stronghold erected directly upon the sacred grounds. A place where the legendary Heroes were supposed to be honored.
Instead, a Demon Peer had claimed the area for himself and turned it into his own castle.
He had deliberately built his stronghold among the graves of the very Heroes who had once fought against his kind.
Kōya’s eyes narrowed.
It wasn’t simply a fortress. It was an insult to the dead.
Kōya looked down at the torn piece of blue cloth resting in his hand.
His mother’s blood. His father’s final, desperate battle. The stolen Lightning Sword. The terrified prisoners marched like cattle. And now, the desecration of the Hero’s Graveyard.
The chaotic pieces of intelligence were finally beginning to connect, forming a dark tapestry. But there was something else buried beneath it. An underlying motive he still couldn’t clearly see.
Kōya carefully placed the blue cloth inside his coat, positioning it safely against his chest, close to his heart.
Then, his hand reached smoothly over his shoulder to the hilt of the Hero’s Sword.
He drew it.
The ancient, immaculate blade sang as it cleared the scabbard, giving off a faint, pure golden radiance that pushed back the gloom.
At the same time, suffocating darkness gathered aggressively around his right side. His Demonic Aura rose violently through his body, dense, heavy, and lethal.
The two catastrophic powers remained entirely distinct. The warm, golden Heroic power resonated perfectly with the holy sword resting in his left hand. The dark, destructive Demonic power surged wildly through his right.
Neither force attempted to replace the other. Neither tried to consume its opposite. They simply, impossibly existed within him in perfect, terrifying equilibrium.
Kōya looked toward the dark eastern horizon.
The jagged mountains stood tall beneath the moon, a massive stone wall separating him from whatever nightmare waited beyond.
"The Hero’s Graveyard..."
He tightened his grip around the golden hilt.
"If you’ve taken her there..."
His golden left side brightened, illuminating the mud. His violet-black right eye burned with abyssal fire.
"...then that is exactly where I am going."
Kōya stepped forward, leaving the slaughtered camp behind.
The dead scout remained rotting in the mud. The abandoned palisades disappeared slowly into the darkness as he marched.
Ahead lay the treacherous mountain pass. Beyond those peaks stood the desecrated Hero’s Graveyard.
And somewhere among the ruined graves of the legendary Heroes, an arrogant Demon Peer had built a castle meant to mock the dead. A dark fortress where Mizuki was currently being held captive.
And waiting inside that castle was the Stormblade. The Demon Peer who had proudly stood against Seiya. The thief who wielded the stolen Lightning Sword. The monster who held the answers Kōya needed.
Kōya’s scarred fingers tightened further around the Hero’s Sword.
"Stormblade."
His voice carried clearly into the silent, listening forest, a promise of impending violence.
"Keep her alive."
He began the long, steep climb toward the mountains.
"Because I am coming for you."
