Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 226 - 223: The Factory Area Under Attack
Chapter 226: Chapter 223: The Factory Area Under Attack
Chen Xing’s rope snagged a large, bare tree a little farther away. With a pull, she leaped into its branches.
Naturally, the lemmings weren’t about to give up on their prey. Another wave gave chase.
She only paused for a second or two to find the next object she could leap to.
After a few more leaps, she disappeared from the sight of Wen Yan and the others.
She had also lured the lemmings onto another street.
When she felt she had drawn them far enough away, she entered her Jiezhi Space.
She hid inside for a long time before the swarm finally passed completely.
After emerging from the Jiezhi Space, Chen Xing immediately ran back to the building where Wen Yan and the others were hiding.
The group inside saw that the swarm had retreated and wanted to go look for Chen Xing, but Meng Hu blocked the door.
No matter what they said to Meng Hu, it refused to move.
It was following its master’s orders not to let them open the door.
A large iron wall blocking the entrance would have been too hard to explain.
"He’s probably just worried it’s too dangerous for us to go out!" Wen Yan explained to the other two, stroking Meng Hu.
Before long, the door opened, and Chen Xing returned, completely unharmed.
"Sister Xing, are you okay?" Wen Yan and Xiao Long asked. Even though they knew Chen Xing would make it back safely, they couldn’t help but worry.
Chen Xing nodded.
The boy stared at Chen Xing in utter disbelief.
He had seen lemming swarms many times, but Chen Xing was the only person he had ever seen survive after being targeted by one.
’It’s incredible!’
’And such a huge, majestic tiger is so docile around her.’
Chen Xing thought that Song Yiguo would probably take a liking to this boy if she brought him back. It would also give the boy a safe place to stay.
"Do you want to have a full meal every day and a safe place to sleep every night?"
The boy nodded, but his eyes were filled with disbelief as he looked at her.
His gaze seemed to ask, ’Does a place like that even exist anymore?’
"Yes! In our Huaxia safe zones, you can live without fear! If you want, you can even become a soldier like them and learn to protect yourself!" she said, pointing to Wen Yan and Xiao Long.
A smile spread across the boy’s face, and he nodded emphatically.
He had already let his guard down around them from the moment Wen Yan gave him the bread.
His parents had turned into zombies after the apocalypse began. He had been on his own for so long, and no one had ever shown him such kindness.
If it weren’t for his incredible hearing, which allowed him to sense and avoid danger ahead of time, he never would have survived this long.
The boy mentioned that there was an airport about seventy or eighty kilometers away.
He didn’t know the exact route, only the general direction.
「Two hours later.」
They arrived at the airport. After contacting a pilot, they waited in the airport control tower for over ten hours before finally boarding a plane back to the Capital City.
Back in the Capital City, the tense atmosphere between the Song and Li Families had eased considerably.
The Li Family knew it was impossible to completely uproot the Song Family.
Since Song Yiguo didn’t oppose Li Ruixiao’s bid to become the new chief, Li Ruixiao, in turn, dropped his hostility toward the Song Family.
As far as Song Yiguo was concerned, as long as he wasn’t the direct target, he couldn’t be bothered to intervene—with the sole exception of the Lu Family.
If Li Ruixiao wanted to be chief, then let him. He could serve as a useful shield and take some of the heat.
During this period, Captain Lu had remained in the Capital City and had been a great help to Song Yiguo.
He helped enforce discipline and cleared out monsters beyond the city walls.
The remnants of the Military Department were also reorganized and fully integrated into the Song Family Army. This not only gave them a new home but also bolstered the Song Family Army’s strength.
Song Yiguo also made a tactful announcement to the public: the Crystal Core trade at the factory was connected to the Song Family Army.
He didn’t state it outright, but the implication was more effective than any direct declaration.
The few groups that had been eyeing the factory immediately dropped their plans to raid it and obediently moved on to other territories.
This, of course, did not include the Migratory Clan.
They had already learned that Captain Lu’s main team was in the Capital City, leaving the factory in a vulnerable state—the perfect time to attack.
The very night Chen Xing arrived in the Capital City, the factory was attacked.
The attack was sudden, and the enemy force numbered in the hundreds.
Brother Xiao spotted them as they approached the factory’s perimeter.
With Captain Lu away, there was no need to risk a direct confrontation.
So, everyone retreated into the underground disaster shelter.
This was the same place where they used to store supplies.
Brother Xiao had been renovating it ever since they moved in.
He had the shelves removed and brought in numerous beds, quilts, and other necessities for taking shelter.
At the very least, the elderly, women, and children would have beds to sleep on.
The elevator entrance on the surface had been sealed and disguised as a wall. No one but their own people knew where the entrance was.
As for their supplies, they had expanded the original secret storage room, carving out a much larger space that was divided into several separate zones.
That way, even if they were unlucky enough to be robbed, they would only lose a portion of their stockpile.
Naturally, only a few completely trusted individuals knew the location of this core storage area.
The Migratory Clan had come to kill and plunder, but they didn’t find a single person—only some used bedrolls.
After searching all night to no avail, they had no choice but to leave in frustration.
With the powerful Song Family Army backing the factory, they didn’t dare to linger for long.
That night, both Chen Xing and Captain Lu received a call.
This was absolutely intolerable!
Besides, if they dared to attack once, they would dare to do it again!
The next day, Chen Xing told Song Yiguo that she was returning to Hualai City, and she left with Captain Lu and his team.
Pier, the boy with the speech impediment, couldn’t bear to see Chen Xing leave.
Chen Xing could only promise that she would come back to see him very soon.
Fortunately, Wen Yan was taking special care of him, so Chen Xing wasn’t too worried.
Before she left, Chen Xing placed a container of spring water in his room and told him to remember to drink some every day.
Pier could hear and make sounds, so with enough effort, he should eventually be able to speak properly.
The spring water was only meant to provide a small bit of help.
Song Yiguo kept his word and actually gave Chen Xing the helicopter.
It wasn’t huge; just the right size to be hauled by a large truck.
As for how to fly it, Song Yiguo had thoughtfully provided a set of computer-based tutorials.
Naturally, No. 00002 and No. 00003 went with Chen Xing.
As for Li Chen and Carson, they had gotten along well with Captain Lu during their time in the Capital City. Knowing they would soon be living alongside him, they had already integrated into his team.
A heavy snow had just fallen, so their vehicles couldn’t travel very fast.
Night fell, but they were still several hours away from the factory.
They didn’t stop, simply switching drivers whenever someone got tired.
By the time they reached the factory, it was nearly midnight.
The factory, however, was lit up as bright as day.
All the floodlights were on, making it seem like daytime.
Figures darted about the factory grounds, and someone was shouting loudly, demanding that everyone "get the hell out."
The Migratory Clan had assumed the factory’s inhabitants would be unprepared for another sneak attack on the second night.
But they had come up empty-handed once again.
This time, however, they had gotten lucky and captured two people who hadn’t managed to hide in time.
They were two recent recruits: a young man and a woman in her forties.
They had been captured near the laundry building.
The laundry building was some distance from the emergency shelter, so by the time they received the warning, it was already too late for them to make it.
To avoid revealing the shelter’s location, the pair didn’t run for the entrance. Instead, they hid inside the laundry building, where they were eventually discovered and dragged out.
