Chapter 225: Chapter 222: Swarm of Mutated Lemmings

After taking care of a few people, Chen Xing and her two companions emerged from the prison cell.

There was only one man in the next cell, but his incessant crying was louder than several people put together.

After Chen Xing let him out, she pointed toward the way they came and told him to run.

The man thanked her and ran toward the exit.

Chen Xing went to find Meng Hu, while Xiao Long and Wen Yan searched for their supplies.

Their bags had been taken from them earlier, and they needed to find them.

By the time they passed through two doors and reached the main hall, they saw over a dozen people lying on the floor.

The glass cover for the Little Grass that had been stolen from Chen Xing had been opened and was lying discarded on the ground.

’That thing is vicious!’

Chen Xing told Xiao Long and Wen Yan to keep their distance. She went over herself, picked up the glass cover, and placed it back over Little Grass.

As soon as she had stored Little Grass in her backpack, the people on the floor began to stir and get up one by one.

Xiao Long and Wen Yan immediately drew their knives and began to finish them off.

Just then, Meng Hu trotted over with several Crystal Cores in its mouth and dropped them on the floor.

"You’re such a good boy!" Chen Xing praised, feeling a little guilty.

’Once everyone was dealt with, it was time to check out the decor.’

The place was decorated with countless high-end luxury goods. The sofa and curtains were all from expensive designer brands.

’How extravagant!’

’No wonder it’s called Huacheng City. The "Hua" must mean "magnificent."’

"I wonder where the supply depot is?" Chen Xing muttered, splitting up with Wen Yan and Xiao Long to search for it.

Meng Hu tossed its head, motioning for its master to follow.

Chen Xing was speechless. ’...Alright, then.’

Meng Hu led her to a slaughterhouse.

The moment she opened the door, the heavy stench of blood hit her.

Just inside was a massive chopping block, large enough to hold several human bodies at once.

Further in, there was a large basin connected to a long hose.

Next to the basin was a large concrete trough filled with piles of bones.

Chen Xing frowned at the sight and covered her nose.

They were mostly human bones. The hands and feet appeared to have been cleanly chopped off at the wrists and ankles.

Just then, Meng Hu stopped in front of a half-open door.

Chen Xing ignored the bones and walked toward the door.

Upon opening it and seeing the supplies stacked inside, Chen Xing couldn’t help but whistle in appreciation.

The room was nearly a hundred square meters and piled high with all kinds of supplies.

Almost everything was still in its packaging.

This far into the apocalypse, it was almost impossible to find such a large stash of supplies.

’It looks like these people scavenged the supplies from the entire city.’

Chen Xing picked out a few items she was short on and quickly stored them in her Jiezhi Space.

Things like cheese, cream, and various Western spices...

She thought for a moment.

’There’s no way Wen Yan and the others could carry all of this.’

’I might as well take most of it. It’ll be useful for repaying favors in the future!’

She quickly stored the vast majority of the goods.

Just then, the sound of Wen Yan and Xiao Long’s voices came from outside.

Before Chen Xing could warn them, the two of them walked in.

A moment later, she heard the sound of someone vomiting, Wen Yan’s reaction being especially severe.

He stared in horror at the skeletons.

’So... it’s true. In the apocalypse, people really do eat other people!’

"There’s good stuff in here!" Chen Xing called out, deliberately distracting them.

Hearing about the supplies, Xiao Long supported Wen Yan as they entered the storage room.

Staring at what amounted to nearly three truckloads of supplies, both of their eyes went wide.

’So... they’d actually profited from this whole ordeal?’

After his nausea subsided, Wen Yan activated his superpower, a black vortex.

Xiao Long then used his own superpower to start placing the supplies neatly into the vortex.

The process wasn’t fast, but it was incredibly efficient. Within a few minutes, all the supplies had been moved into the vortex.

Meanwhile, Meng Hu had already gone to help its master find a vehicle.

In a small parking area just outside the entrance, there were several trucks.

Soon, all the goods were loaded onto the trucks, but before they could climb aboard...

The mute boy from before suddenly came running out.

He pointed toward the intersection, gesturing wildly.

"Is something coming?" Chen Xing asked him in the common tongue.

The boy nodded, then immediately turned and ran into a nearby building. He poked his head out and waved for them to hurry over.

Chen Xing didn’t waste a second. The group quickly followed him and took cover inside.

Just as they got into hiding, a dark shape flickered into view at the intersection.

It was about the size of a large, fat, orange tabby cat.

Its four legs were so short that its body nearly dragged on the ground, and a short tail trailed behind it.

The strangest thing about it was its pointed, rat-like snout.

’Is... is that an Arctic lemming?’

It looked exactly like an Arctic lemming, but... it was far, far larger.

The boy tugged on the corner of Chen Xing’s clothes and then ran upstairs.

Chen Xing and the others followed him up.

Once upstairs, they closed the door and moved to a window overlooking the intersection.

Everyone felt a cold sweat trickle down their foreheads.

In that moment, Chen Xing was immensely grateful to the little boy, and astounded by his sharp hearing.

The road at the intersection had completely disappeared, blanketed by a swarm of mutated lemmings, with a seemingly endless stream still arriving.

Soon, they reached the three trucks.

In the blink of an eye, the cargo in the trucks was gone.

The boy pressed a finger to his lips, warning them not to make a single sound.

Even watching the supplies they had just acquired vanish before their eyes, none of them dared to make a sound.

’This is terrifying!’

’You call those rats?’

’Even the greediest of pigs couldn’t eat with such efficiency and speed!’

’And their numbers are terrifying.’

’If we accidentally draw their attention, our chances of getting away are pretty slim, huh?’

Just as everyone was holding their breath, not daring to make a sound, a bloodcurdling scream suddenly rang out from downstairs.

The group froze. "...!" Startled, they all looked downstairs.

They saw that a portion of the lemming swarm had been drawn by the sound and was now flooding into the building.

’Fucking hell, talk about dragging people down with you!’

Chen Xing recognized the voice as the man they had released earlier.

’If I had known he’d be such a liability, I would’ve just left him in his cell!’

"Stay here and hide! Don’t come out, no matter what!" Chen Xing had already made her decision.

’What other choice is there?’

’I’m the only one with the Jiezhi Space, so I have to be the one to lure them away.’

’These things... they’re more disgusting than they are scary.’

Chen Xing stepped out, closed the door behind her, and then immediately pulled a large steel plate from her space to barricade it shut.

By the time she reached the second floor, the lemmings were already swarming up the stairs.

As for the man who had caused all the trouble, only scraps remained.

Chen Xing immediately jumped down to the first floor, successfully drawing the attention of all the lemmings.

’Easier said than done, though.’

’Damn it, where am I even supposed to land?’

The seething black mass of lemmings covered the floor like a carpet of fallen leaves in autumn.

’No matter what, I have to lead these lemmings far away and then find a place to hide.’

Luckily, she saw that one of the trucks was now clear of lemmings. She threw the rope in her hand, hooked it onto the side mirror, and used the momentum to vault onto the truck’s roof.

Looking down from her new vantage point, she saw a veritable sea of lemmings.

The others watching from the window above felt their hearts pound in terror.

Chen Xing didn’t dare linger; lemmings were already starting to swarm up the side of the truck.
