Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse
Chapter 185 - 182: Electric Current
Chapter 185: Chapter 182: Electric Current
It was an ordinary room, containing only a bed, a computer desk, and a wardrobe against the wall.
Chen Xing checked all the wardrobe doors but found nothing suspicious.
She turned and scanned the room; it didn’t look like there was anywhere to hide.
Finally, her gaze fell on the bed.
This was Cao Guangrong’s home.
Cao Guangrong had been bribed to impersonate her parents.
’So... it’s possible his house has a secret passage, isn’t it?’
When she moved the bed, a square hidden compartment was revealed in the floor.
She reached out, pulled it open, and revealed a small tunnel.
The tunnel wasn’t very wide, but it was still possible that they had used it to take Meng Hu.
’But... whoever carried Meng Hu must be incredibly strong.’
She locked the room’s door from the inside before stepping into the tunnel.
The inside was surprisingly dry. Dim lights lined the walls, illuminating a staircase.
She followed the only staircase, heading down.
The passage led straight down. After descending what felt like at least a dozen flights of stairs, she saw the path ahead suddenly widen.
The surrounding concrete walls gave way to panels of white glass.
It was quite similar to that room in the Agricultural Research Institute, the one she couldn’t bear to stay in.
However, it wasn’t as blindingly bright, and it didn’t fill her with fear.
There was only one door ahead.
Chen Xing took a moment to compose herself before walking over.
The instant her hand touched the door, an electric current shot up her arm and coursed through her body.
But she absorbed the current perfectly, storing it within her body.
She could now perfectly perceive electricity and knew exactly how much was stored in her body—just over half her capacity.
After she absorbed the current, the surrounding power systems seemed to short-circuit, and the lights began to flicker.
The moment she opened the door, the power failed completely, plunging everything into pitch-black darkness.
Temporarily blinded, Chen Xing immediately took a step back to create a safe distance.
Just as she retreated, a powerful force shot straight toward her head.
The blow was so powerful it generated a gust of wind.
If she hadn’t retreated in time, that punch would have likely cost her half her life.
As her eyes focused, they adjusted to the darkness, revealing a tall figure standing before her.
This person was over two meters tall, with a body strong enough to kill a bull with one punch.
He seemed frustrated that he had missed his target.
He swung his fist and attacked Chen Xing again.
His gaze was unfocused, as if he couldn’t quite pinpoint his target.
Chen Xing realized he couldn’t see clearly, so she became less cautious.
She gathered electricity in her hand and sent it flying toward his palm.
Instantly, the tiger-like man collapsed, his skin burned so black he was unrecognizable.
Chen Xing didn’t waste time wondering who he was or why he was here. She immediately pressed further inside.
There was still no sign of Meng Hu, which made her deeply uneasy.
She could only pray that nothing had happened to Meng Hu.
The last time Meng Hu went missing, she couldn’t sense it either.
But it had returned not long after.
This time, it had been missing for much longer.
She suspected Meng Hu had been knocked unconscious; otherwise, there would have been some kind of sign.
Her surroundings were still pitch-black and so silent she could hear her own heart beating.
At this moment, her phone suddenly vibrated.
She took out her phone and saw it was a call from Song Yiguo.
She hung up immediately.
’I can’t be distracted right now!’
In that brief moment of distraction, a bolt of lightning shot straight at her head.
As she dodged, she unleashed her own bolt of lightning in return.
A pained scream echoed as her attack landed, followed by several more bolts of lightning flashing from ahead.
Chen Xing scrambled to dodge the barrage.
At the same time, she didn’t forget to unleash her own current at her attackers.
Her bolt of current reached the other side and instantly split into several streams, striking down everyone there.
Chen Xing was speechless. She had startled even herself.
When she walked over to check, the Superpower Users were charred black, their burns even more severe than the man from before.
’I didn’t realize my electricity was this powerful.’
’I’ll have to make sure to store more electricity from now on!’
She collected the Crystal Cores, stepped over the bodies of the Superpower Users, and entered another area.
It was still dark here.
Inside a series of glass rooms, each contained a hospital bed.
Beside each bed were a computer and various medical instruments.
Seeing these instruments, Chen Xing felt uncomfortable.
When she had first woken up, her entire body had been connected to instruments just like these.
She clenched her fists, refusing to let the memories affect her, and quickened her pace.
Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a figure in one of the glass rooms.
She quickly backtracked and saw that there was indeed a person lying on the bed.
The person’s eyes were closed, their body hooked up to numerous tubes. Their brow was furrowed in agony, likely from the pain.
Her head was shaved bald, and her face was obscured by the equipment, making her unrecognizable.
She forcefully pulled open the room’s door.
But before she could enter, the floor under the bed opened up, and the bed and person fell through.
By the time Chen Xing got inside, the floor had already sealed shut.
Damn!
Chen Xing tried many times, but the floor would not open.
She tried using brute force, but the floor seemed to have become incredibly reinforced; it only dented and refused to break open!
’What do I do?’
Chen Xing stomped her foot in frustration.
Just before the bed disappeared, she had seen the face of the person on it. It was Yan Junxi.
This Yan Junxi no longer possessed her former seductive beauty.
’It looks like things are about to change in the Duole Safety Zone!’
’If Song Yiguo sees what Yan Junxi looks like now... or if Yan Junxi dies just like this...’
’The consequences would be grim.’
She knew how much Song Yiguo cared about Yan Junxi.
If the Lu Family and Song Yiguo were to fight, it wouldn’t just be the two families who suffered, but the ordinary people as well.
There was nothing she could do here. She could only press on with her search.
She knew one thing for sure now: she was on the right path.
Meng Hu’s disappearance was definitely connected to the Research Institute.
’But why capture Meng Hu?’
’The people from the Research Institute must have noticed its abilities.’
’After all, a normal tiger couldn’t be that powerful or intelligent.’
Just as she continued to run forward, a large pack of zombie dogs suddenly appeared ahead.
They were all enormous, drooling as they stared at Chen Xing.
Just as Chen Xing was about to advance, she suddenly heard 00002’s voice from a corner.
In that corner was a small opening, which looked more like a ventilation duct than a door.
Chen Xing immediately crawled in.
Then she saw 00002 staring at the zombie dogs. "I don’t know what’s in here, but they don’t dare to come over!"
Chen Xing looked back. It was just a long, sheet metal ventilation duct.
"What are you doing here?"
looked at her apologetically, his expression dejected. "I saw the intruders knock Meng Hu unconscious. I was too scared to make a sound... so I just secretly followed them here." He hadn’t had the courage to fight back.
Chen Xing nodded. At least he had good intentions, and it had taken guts to follow them here.
Just as they were thinking of a way to leave this place, a strange noise suddenly came from within the duct.
