Chapter 320: We Can’t Take The Same Road Again

[FROLO]

Sergei had been working for over seven hours now. But he wasn’t even close to being done, and frankly, that was a little too much.

He considered calling Volkov to ask about when the fuck Katya’s workload had gotten that big, but he figured he needed to keep going.

So, the eighth hour went by, with Sergei thriving on coffee cups and hope that he needed to be good for his omega.

The ninth hour passed.

By the tenth, he noticed the pattern.

The workload was not realistic.

Not because they were endless reports, but because Sergei noticed one of the reports was for a project meant for three months from now. It made no sense for it to have been forwarded to Katya’s junk folder of pending mail and work.

And the alpha checked the timers for all the received work. Most of them had been sent today from the fourth hour.

That was six hours inside this office for work that was not urgent. Six hours of dealing with things that he could have sorted out at a later time.

Someone wanted him in that office for as long as they could. Which could only mean that something else had happened.

And Sergei...

The alpha got up and walked out of the inner office only to find Volkov gone. Anya’s office was closed. Rahim had long gone home for the day.

Sergei checked the timestamp on his watch, and fuck was it startling.

Eleven o’clock at night.

Eleven.

Sergei didn’t call out for anyone. He knew he had stayed up so late that it made no sense. He knew his Solnyshka must have slept because Sergei had cooked enough food earlier before he’d burnt himself, and Katya forced him to change.

He hoped that Katya had at least taken dinner before bed, fuck.

Of course, he didn’t use the elevator going up. He wanted to see his omega. He didn’t want him to hear the sound of the elevator dinging. It was a simple thing that meant so much for Sergei.

Because if Katya was asleep, Sergei didn’t want to wake him up, especially now that he was suspicious of why Anya had pushed forward all the workload from as far as three months ahead.

It was not realistic.

Well...

Until he opened the penthouse door.

Until he turned the light on in the dark house. His penthouse lights were never out completely. The lights usually dimmed with time because Sergei sometimes slept on the couch and was too lazy to get up and turn that shit off each time.

But today... There was nothing.

Darkness.

Absolute darkness.

But then the lights came on and Sergei’s breath held.

"No... Sol... Solnyshka," Sergei breathed desperately as he rushed in.

Only to find Katya’s phone on the table, and his penthouse more of a mess than he’d ever seen it. It was like someone had attacked his space, which was not even a possibility because Moskowsky Holdings was a fortress.

"Solnyshka!!" Sergei called out, his first stop being his bedroom. It had been turned upside down like someone was looking for something.

It was almost hilarious how certain he was of his own security.

Then he checked his safe, and it was untouched.

His marriage papers with Vitya were still there. Still intact. Still reminding him that he needed to move on and be happy.

But if his safe wasn’t broken into, what the fuck had been taken?

And Sergei saw his closet door open. It was the most ridiculous of things because there was just no fucking way someone broke into Moskowsky’s penthouse to check a damn closet.

Well, clearly someone thought it was a good thing because without his Solnyshka here, he needed to think straight. He needed to figure out what the fuck had happened with his Solnyshka.

And since no one had alerted him of any kidnapping, it only meant that Katya had seen something and was angry.

Maybe the press conference?

Fuck Sergei didn’t know.

So, he checked his closet while replaying his own press statement. There was nothing about what he’d said that would piss Katya off. Besides, if Katya had left with Svet and Andre, they’d have told him.

It was only basic decency, right?

Until he noticed his missing clothes.

Too specific, yet too unplanned.

And as if on instinct, the alpha checked his laundry basket, and of course, his clothes were missing.

Katya.

Sergei couldn’t help the smile on his face at the thought of his omega nesting somewhere within the house.

It was a nice touch to his penthouse, really. And he wanted to tell Katya that he could nest wherever he liked, no matter what happened. That the penthouse was his home just as it was Sergei’s.

He could already imagine his beautiful Katya cuddled up in clothes smelling like him. The thought itself had him so giddy that Sergei didn’t even think of the abandoned phone on the table.

His Solnyshka had to be somewhere around here.

But then he started looking for him. Calling him soft names as he encouraged him to so much as breathe, so he could see him. Hell, he even took off the shirt he was wearing, ready to add it to Katya’s pile.

He was more than ready to let his omega use him.

But each door he closed brought him closer to the first instinct he’d had at the door.

He had told himself that it was impossible. That his Solnyshka was just trying to nest.

But every door that closed in the penthouse got him closer to his only fear.

That someone had taken Katya.

And worse...

That Katya had run away.

So, when he circled back to the penthouse entrance and didn’t see his omega, Sergei knew something was wrong. He knew something had happened. He knew someone had to answer for this.

And his first thought was on Anya.

She had stacked him up with so much work, and he’d taken it thinking that it was for Katya, which could only mean that she was distracting him.

Trying to stall.

She had to have known he’d figure things out eventually.

That made it even worse because the fact that Rahim, Volkov, and Anya hadn’t even been on the executive floor or even had fresh scents there for a while should have told him something was wrong.

But of course, Sergei had wanted to be optimistic.

For Katya.

Yet now he was pacing in his trashed house without his omega and with the possibility that he had lost him.

Or maybe it was Yaroslav?

No.

Sergei couldn’t think like that.

Yaroslav was not that deranged.

But at the same time, it was the only pointer Sergei had at the moment.

The only reason he could think of was that had Anya and his secretaries not breathing a word to him.

Did they think he would fight his own son for Katya Romanov? Did they think he was that insane of a father to his son?

Fuck.

So, Sergei took out his phone, staring at the object in his hand like he wasn’t sure if he really wanted to do this. It was the first time he’d be facing this shit.

Oh, how he hoped he wasn’t a bad father.

He hoped his son didn’t get hurt because of him.

Because that would break Sergei more than a rejection from Katya Romanov ever would.

"My dear boy," Sergei breathed when the phone connected.
