[KUMARIN BRATVA]

The Kumarin Bratva HQ was busier than it always had been.

The senator they had planned to have stabbed, the ambulance that had taken him from the Romanov manor had not made a stop at any hospital. In fact, no one really knew where the senator was.

Kenzo had had men across the city looking for the senator, being on the lookout for when the senator would show up. It was a matter of emergency because without the senator, there was nothing much that could move forward.

He knew it.

They all knew it.

As if that wasn’t enough, their leader had given Kenzo the power to do whatever was needed. Leader had made sure everyone trusted Kenzo before he disappeared.

Some of the Bratva members said their leader had disappeared.

Others said he was preparing for the war with Sergei.

There was no certainty either way because right now, not much was going according to their plans, and it was pretty depressing.

"Nadia, what’s the status?" Kenzo asked as he walked to the surveillance and situation room.

They’d been monitoring all the cameras across Frolo, hoping to find anything that could help them move forward, but there hadn’t been much lately.

The video that they had been sure would make Sergei question everything hadn’t had a significant effect. Not like they’d hoped for anyway.

"Still nothing, though there are whispers that Sergei will be giving a statement today. The final report was shared with the investigation team earlier today," Nadia, one of the few people in the huge compound that Kenzo trusted, reported.

It had been a little too quiet, and they both knew it. And it didn’t make any sense because a Moskowsky floor had been blown up.

Sergei’s retaliation was expected, yet there was nothing.

Just the kind of quiet that was so unsettling.

"Do you have the second video ready?" Kenzo said, pinching the bridge of his nose harshly.

He didn’t understand, really. What Sergei wanted.

He didn’t understand how the evidence they had planned and the perfect suspicion had still managed to slow down everything five days later.

This was unlike Moskowsky, and while Kenzo wanted to think that Sergei was not doing anything because he was in love with Katya Romanov, Kenzo knew better.

Sergei hated traitors.

Children, family, friends, and acquaintances of the man had fallen more than once because they had dared to betray Sergei.

The man didn’t care if he knew a person his whole life; at the first hint of betrayal, Sergei eliminated them.

The rumors around the city had always been the guide for that.

Because many people said that Sergei had abandoned his real last name because his family had betrayed him. That Sergei had killed his own family, wiped them off the face of the realm, because they had betrayed his trust.

That was why he stayed with his second name as a last and found himself a new last name.

Some said he stayed Sergei Moskowsky because it was his middle name. Others believed that he’d been betrayed so much in his circle that he chose to settle on just one name.

Sergei.

But no one knew what the truth was.

Not the city.

Not the Bratva.

No one except for Anya Kavinsky and the late Vitya Gamov.

But this wasn’t the time for that, was it? Because there was only one compelling reason for Sergei not to act on all the accusations.

And Kenzo knew better than to still think love was a motivator.

Sergei...

The Devil of Frolo trusted that omega.

Not because he was in love.

But because the omega had earned his trust.

It was the only valid explanation. Yet one that Kenzo refused to believe.

Because if Sergei trusted Katya because he loved him, it was easier to manipulate the man and his emotions. But if Sergei trusted Katya because the omega had earned his trust, then this was a death game.

There was nothing more there.

Fuck.

"Mr. Kenzo?" Nadia spoke, snapping the Bratva second-in-command out of his trance.

The man was still haunted by the idea of Sergei trusting anyone other than Anya and Yaroslav. That was too expensive a bargain, and he couldn’t have it.

Not right now.

"What."

"The video needs your approval before we release it," Nadia said to the frustrated man. He looked like he had other things to work on. That this wasn’t even the most important thing they were doing.

Because Katya had to be the weakness for Sergei.

There was no other way.

Katya Romanov had to be their way in.

He had to.

"Release it to every media station, every social media. Make sure it comes before them and gives a press statement on the investigation. If it’s released after theirs, there will be nothing," Kenzo said dismissively before he walked out, frustrated.

He couldn’t believe that this was happening. That this was what had become of them.

But at the same time, Sergei Moskowsky was a predator. He didn’t even need to show his fangs for everyone to feel hunted. Perhaps that was also why Kenzo was stressed the fuck out by Sergei’s silence.

Because Kenzo had been alive when Sergei had purged Frolo that one time. When Sergei had made an entire organization disappear in one night.

When Sergei had gone to war for his son.

And now...

Now there was a chance that this was going to be a war for Katya Romanov.

And it was the most unsettling of things for Kenzo.

Kenzo could still remember his father’s screams as Sergei’s machete slashed his head off with so much ease, as if his father had meant nothing.

He remembered the way his mother had begged for her life, and he’d not even granted her that mercy. If anything, Sergei had suffocated her with a polythene bag over her head.

But... The madman didn’t do that bit himself.

He had one of his psychos do it for him.

The Myrtles, Kenzo recalled.

That was the name of those four. The two men and women who had been beside Sergei in the worst of nights for Frolo’s underworld.

And Kenzo knew the Myrtles were back.

They had fucking posted a selfie of their faces on social media like they were not being hunted by everyone.

But then Kenzo was smart enough to know the Myrtles weren’t stupid enough to come out like that.

It had been over ten years since the first instance.

Thirty since that night.

But Kenzo still had nightmares of that night.

He still remembered the faces that sniffed his family out. Some of the original Myrtle members had died that night, and in their place were their children. Kids who were not supposed to be involved in the war.

Yet had grown up and chosen that life under Sergei.

"FUUUCKKK!!!!" Kenzo shouted once he was outside. He didn’t like anything that was happening.

And with the senator stabbed, he needed to be careful. But fuck was it a nightmare waiting for Sergei Moskowsky to make a move.

Because Kenzo knew it would only ever be for Katya Romanov.

The fucking omega wars had been started without his knowledge.

The lucky little thing that both father and son loved in equal measure.

Oh, but Kenzo had never despised an omega like he did the Romanov omega.

Damn.

"It’s posted, sir," Nadia’s voice came over his thoughts.

And Kenzo hoped that this time...

This time, the fire wouldn’t be snuffed out soon.

Was it guaranteed, though?
