Contract Marriage: Married to My Ex-Husband's Alpha Stepfather [BL]
Chapter 118: What Then, If Society Owed Me??
[KATYA]
All his life, Katya Romanov had never received death threats.
Not once.
He didn’t even imagine it.
And certainly not like this.
Not in this magnitude at once.
This was a first for him.
The messages were insane.
Some of them were death threats to Katya. Warning the omega against separating the new Moskowsky family. Telling the omega to keep an eye out all the time.
Some warned the omega not to even think of doing any interviews relating to the news about Milan and her new baby. Oh, but those messages sounded unhinged.
But it wasn’t even half of it all.
Others mocked Katya for not being able to give the Moskowskys an heir even after seven years being part of the most prestigious, overly protective family line.
Others said that Milan had done the Moskowskys a favor by sticking around Yaroslav all this time because otherwise the Moskowskys would never have gotten to have an heir, because Katya was barren.
The messages were cruel.
Too cruel.
Some asked him to jump into traffic, while others very exclusively asked him to do the world a favor and self-exit.
But then they didn’t stop.
And Katya...
He wouldn’t even feel as offended because a part of his brain had already accepted their insults as his truth long before he had ever read them. He knew they were bound to eventually, anyway.
Katya believed they were right.
He had been unable to have anything from his marriage to Yaroslav.
It had been a waste of both their time and most especially Yaroslav’s, or so Katya believed.
"Your presence always made me feel empty and small," Yaroslav had said the day Katya caught him cheating with Milan inside their matrimonial home.
The one place that was supposed to be sacred.
Katya had never forgotten it at all.
’What about my truth?’ Katya sighed softly.
He knew it would never work.
Even if he stopped out there and told them that he had had a baby and then miscarried because Yaroslav and Milan cheated, they would never believe him.
Never.
And he didn’t know how to feel about that.
Especially now that Sergei had been there with Irina to welcome the baby at the hospital. It was one of the cruelest things Katya had ever had to deal with, and it hurt. A lot.
Yet Katya couldn’t find it in him to shut his phone down.
He had to see.
He needed to see.
Maybe because he was desperate to know what would happen, or maybe because he was not sure how to feel, because they were tearing him apart like he was worth nothing.
Milan had bested him in something that hadn’t even truly been a competition.
Gods, Katya felt like crying.
But he knew that was what they were expecting of him.
That it was what his reality was bound to be like.
The landlines on his desk hadn’t rung even once, and Katya was relieved. But his relief only lasted a moment because it rang right after that thought.
Almost like there was some telepathy with his mind, and he wasn’t white grasping the effects of everything he was being thrust into yet.
Katya considered letting it ring and stop, because he assumed it was just one of the people who had somewhat gotten his contacts, but even that was weird as hell.
Because if a company like Moskowsky wasn’t able to protect the landline communications within their offices, then what the hell were they doing as the largest corporation in the country then?
"Can’t be worse than it already is," Katya mumbled to himself as he stared at his phone that was still lighting up. He had put it on ’do not disturb’ mode, but damn if the notifications didn’t stop coming.
"Executive floor 1," Katya said, knowing damn well there was no such thing in the company. But then it was his only way of knowing if the trolls were calling him and waiting to abuse him again.
He was too tired.
And while he had contemplated shutting his phone one too many times in the last hours, Katya knew it would only be harder to use his phone if he turned it on later.
At least now the notifications were incoming and getting it over with.
"Oh, baby," Katya heard, and the omega found himself sniffling.
"Svet," Katya breathed, his voice shaking for the first time since he had learned about the developments within the Moskowsky family.
"Tell me I can kill him now, please," Svetlana pleaded.
Katya didn’t even ask to know who she was talking about.
It was hard enough that things had changed, but damn it was exhausting beyond any reasonable measure at the moment.
"How’s work?" Katya asked, changing the subject.
He didn’t want any more chaos than there already was, honestly.
There was only so much he could handle before he completely shut down. Perhaps if they pretended that his life wasn’t shit, then they would be better.
"Your parents couldn’t reach you... They wanted to come to Moskowsky. But we held them back," Svet said sadly, her voice holding the kind of pity that didn’t make Katya feel pathetic.
Katya let out a sigh of relief.
He knew that they had to have tried reaching him one too many times if they were considering coming to the Moskowsky group. It was a complicated day, and Katya was glad that Svet had stopped them.
Because otherwise, his parents would have been dragged into the middle of all this.
His parents, who didn’t even know his arrangement with Sergei was permanent.
His parents, who probably didn’t know how far and how deep the chaos went, and how it was all affecting Katya.
"It’s a work day... You did well, thank you. They have to keep working even if they’re the owners of Romanov steel," Katya said softly, and Svet sighed.
Katya was deflecting.
He was running away from his reality.
Could he be blamed, though?
He wasn’t ready to face it all. But then, who could ever be ready for it all?
Someone had leaked his personal details to the world a little too conveniently, and he wouldn’t even know even if he was suspecting two people now.
But maybe it was all in his head.
Maybe he had accidentally given someone his contacts.
Maybe.
After all, if the senator could get Katya’s contacts, surely someone else could too, right?
"Andre and I are at the pub. Wanna come? And don’t give me bullshit about working or how it is too early to drink. You’re the Moskowsky group chairman; you can literally do whatever you want.
"And if that barbarian tries shit, I will kill him for you, for free," Svet said, and Katya heard Andre chuckling in the background.
They were wasted.
Frankly, Katya, with no meetings, knew that it was useless to be here. He could stay and pretend that he wasn’t wasting away, like his life wasn’t ripping apart, or he could go and give himself a free day.
After all, if the Moskowskys wanted to ruin him, what was the worst that they could do that they hadn’t done yet?
Kill Katya’s parents? It would raise worse questions, especially at a time like this.
Kill Katya? There was too much that Katya owed to Sergei to consider killing him and freeing him that easily.
So, Katya grabbed his phone and put it in his backpack. Then he took the black envelope too.
He noticed that his backpack didn’t have the scarf and sweater Sergei had given him. But Katya was sure those two were somewhere around the office.
He would come back to check later anyway.
However, until then, today was his free day.
"Cancel all my appointments, Rahim."
Then he left.
