She led them to a table and had them sit down, then went back to greeting the other guests.
Pan Lanfang glanced around and saw the uncle standing on the other side of the courtyard, chatting with a few men.
He was wearing a dark blue suit, his hair was slicked back, and he held a cigarette between his fingers, his voice booming.
"Our Liu Yan is just so lucky." The uncle’s voice carried across several tables. "The groom opened two restaurants in the city, makes at least a few hundred thousand a year. He bought a 140-square-meter house downtown and spent over three hundred thousand on renovations."
The people beside him chimed in. "That’s for sure. Liu Yan is so fortunate."
"Old Liu, you’ve found yourself a great son-in-law."
"I’m so envious of you, Old Liu."
The uncle beamed, his voice growing even louder. "Just wait until the groom arrives. You all have to see him. The kid is sharp-looking, 1.8 meters tall, fair-skinned and clean-cut..."
As Pan Lanfang listened, the smile on her face grew a little stiff.
She knew what kind of person her brother-in-law was—he was always obsessed with appearances and loved to one-up everyone.
Back when Jiang Yixia was raising two children on her own, he’d gossiped about her behind her back plenty.
Now that his own daughter was marrying a rich man, he was even more determined to flaunt it.
Jiang Guoqiang heard it too, and his expression darkened. He muttered, "That man... he’s still the same piece of work."
"That’s enough. It’s their happy occasion today, so just let it go." Pan Lanfang tugged his sleeve, whispering a reminder.
A short while later, Jiang Yixia arrived.
She was wearing a light-blue dress with her hair down and light makeup on, looking several years younger than usual.
Carrying a gift box, she walked into the courtyard and glanced around.
"Mom, Dad." She walked over and sat down beside Pan Lanfang.
Pan Lanfang looked her up and down and said with a smile, "You look so beautiful today."
Jiang Yixia felt a little bashful. "Where’s Liu Yan?" she asked curiously. "Hasn’t she come out yet?"
"She’s still getting her makeup done," Pan Lanfang explained. "Your uncle is out front greeting guests. Didn’t you see him?"
Jiang Yixia nodded. "I saw him. He was chatting with some people. What was he saying so loudly? I heard him all the way from outside."
"What else? Bragging about his son-in-law," Pan Lanfang replied, lowering her voice.
Jiang Yixia just smiled and didn’t reply.
Just then, the aunt walked over.
She saw Jiang Yixia, looked her up and down, and said with a smile, "Yixia, you’re here! You look so pretty today. By the way, I heard from your mom that you’ve found a boyfriend? Why didn’t you bring him?"
Yixia froze for a second. Before she could answer, Pan Lanfang jumped in, "He’ll be here in a little while."
The aunt’s eyes lit up, her voice tinged with curiosity. "Oh, really? What does he do for a living?"
Pan Lanfang said pointedly, "He’s in business."
"In business?" There was a subtle shift in the aunt’s tone. She smiled. "What kind of business?"
Pan Lanfang was a little flustered by the question and didn’t know how to respond. Just then, a sudden commotion erupted at the courtyard gate.
"He’s here! He’s here! The groom has arrived!" someone shouted.
All eyes turned toward the gate.
A black car pulled up to the gate. The door opened, and a man in a white suit stepped out. He was fair-skinned and clean-cut—he really did look sharp.
He held a bouquet of flowers, a smile on his face.
The uncle hurried forward to greet him, grinning from ear to ear. "You’re here, you’re here! Come in, quick, come in!"
Surrounded by a crowd, the groom entered the courtyard and headed for the house.
The aunt, no longer concerned with questioning Jiang Yixia, hurried to follow them.
Pan Lanfang breathed a sigh of relief. "Honestly," she said, exasperated. "My sister is so nosy. She even wants to know what kind of business Xiaolu runs."
Yixia just sighed and gave a small smile, not saying anything.
A little while later, Jiang Yixia’s phone chimed.
She picked it up and saw a message from Lu Fan.
Yixia felt a pang of embarrassment. ’I can’t believe Mom actually called Lu Fan over.’
’Mom must have thought that bringing him here to pose as my boyfriend would stop the relatives from gossiping so much.’
Thinking of Pan Lanfang’s painstaking efforts, Yixia felt a little guilty.
Lu Fan: [I’m here. At the entrance to the village.]
Yixia replied: [Just come straight in. It’s the house on the east side of the village with the inflatable arch out front.]
After sending the message, she told Pan Lanfang, "Mom, he’s here."
Pan Lanfang’s eyes lit up. She quickly stood up and looked toward the gate.
A moment later, Lu Fan’s figure appeared at the courtyard gate.
He wore a dark gray shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong wrists.
His hair was neatly combed, and he had a clean, sharp look about him.
Pan Lanfang hurried over to greet him, saying cheerfully, "Xiaolu, you’re here! Quick, come in, come in."
Lu Fan smiled, called out, "Auntie," and followed her into the courtyard.
Yixia sat at the table, and as she watched him walk over, her heart suddenly beat a few times faster.
Lu Fan sat down beside her, smiled, and said in a low voice, "You look beautiful today."
Yixia’s face flushed. She shot him a glare but didn’t say anything.
Pan Lanfang watched from the side, her heart swelling with delight.
Just then, the aunt walked over again.
She saw Lu Fan and looked him up and down, her eyes filled with scrutiny.
"Sis, is this Yixia’s boyfriend?" she asked Pan Lanfang.
Pan Lanfang quickly replied, "Yes, yes, this is Xiaolu."
The aunt looked at Lu Fan and asked with a smile, "So, young man, what do you do?"
"I run a small business," Lu Fan answered politely.
Just a moment before, Pan Lanfang had quietly muttered a few words to Lu Fan.
Lu Fan had listened and nodded, indicating that he knew what to say.
