Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Today You Are Renee

Lynn Miller looked at Renee Morgan, a little shaken: "Morgan, could they be stung to death?"

Even though those big guys were strong, Zayed had said those bees weren’t ordinary bees—they were The Stingers, notorious killers among bees. They’re aggressive, and when they attack, swarms in the hundreds or thousands appear. Locally, hundreds have already been stung to death by these highly venomous, ferocious bees.

Renee Morgan thought about her own unconscious act, possibly getting others killed, and couldn’t bear it. She also remembered that, though they’d robbed her of biscuits, they still gave her a warning at the end, which proved they weren’t truly bad people. Could she just stand by and watch them get stung to death?

In that situation this afternoon, Julian Prescott and Lionel Lincoln were surrounded by a swarm of bees, there was no way to blow the emergency survival whistle. Even if someone rescued them later, the consequences would be unimaginable.

With life and death at stake, Renee Morgan could never just stand by and do nothing.

Renee Morgan stood up, and looked at everyone: "Who wants to come with me to check it out?"

The others looked at each other, uncertain what she wanted to do.

Lynn Miller frowned at her: "Morgan, don’t be reckless, maybe things aren’t what we think. If we end up walking into their trap, that’s bad."

Lynn still remembered how they’d robbed them with military knives yesterday—not unreasonable that she was suspicious.

Miles Yates nodded seriously: "If you’re worried, us guys can go over and take a look."

Kyle Beckett nodded like a pecking chicken: "It’s not safe for a girl like you to go over, let us go."

Wendy Aldridge was secretly happy hearing that Renee wanted to show off, but when she heard their objections, she laughed out: "Renee Morgan is tougher than any of us, not a bit worse than you men. What good will you do if you go?"

When Julian Prescott and Lionel Lincoln were attacked by the swarm, all of them were at a loss, but it was Renee Morgan who rushed out in front.

Wendy Aldridge’s words had a double meaning, making them all blush; they didn’t want to admit it, but it was true—Renee Morgan was in no way inferior to the men.

But Renee Morgan had no interest in guessing their thoughts, and simply looked at Zayed and Sean, the two strongest members of Squad One: "You two grab some torches and come with me."

Wendy Aldridge’s eyes widened with dissatisfaction. Renee wanted to show off, so why bring along members of Squad One? Wasn’t that using borrowed authority?

But last night, judging by Squad One’s murderous glare, they probably hated those big guys to death; there’s no way they’d want to save them. Renee was taking herself too seriously.

Wendy Aldridge: "Zack and Sean, are you really willing to go?"

She stared directly at Zayed and Sean, waiting for them to show how reluctant they were, so she could speak up and help them out. Surely they’d appreciate her.

On one side was Renee’s forceful push, on the other was her own understanding sympathy. Who wouldn’t pick her?

Silence. No one answered!

Wendy Aldridge awkwardly dropped her smile, pouting and saying nothing.

Zayed was not an impulsive person, otherwise his father wouldn’t have entrusted him with such a faction at such a young age.

After about a minute, Zayed looked at Sean: "Let’s go."

Sean picked up his pack without complaint, and grabbed two torches.

Lynn Miller and Kyle Beckett tried to follow, but Renee Morgan, carrying her toolkit, glanced back at the two of them: "Just the three of us will go. Don’t worry. If we don’t make it back in time... take care of yourselves. If it doesn’t work, blow the whistle and get out. Life comes first."

When Renee Morgan finished her last sentence, Lynn Miller and Kyle Beckett’s eyes turned red.

She finished, took two torches from the fire, and nodded to Zayed and Sean: "Let’s go."

Zayed and Sean followed behind, listening to her careful instructions—they were there to help, but if things got dangerous, don’t act tough. Keeping themselves safe was most important.

She’d said exactly the same to Lynn Miller and Kyle Beckett earlier, but Zayed and Sean still felt a warmth in their hearts—a kindness they hadn’t felt in a long time.

It would be a lie to say she wasn’t nervous, but compared to the fact that, because of her, those people could die to the swarm, Renee Morgan mustered her courage, grabbed the torches, crossed the riverbank, and headed for the camp.

The sky was already pitch black, but here it was particularly dark—they hadn’t made a fire at all. In the darkness, a few vague figures were scrambling around, looking almost comical, but the screams sounded chillingly real.

Renee Morgan wasn’t sure if it was a swarm; she had Zayed and Sean follow close behind her. If it really was The Stingers, the three of them would have to stand back-to-back to resist.

The livestream audience knew Renee Morgan, Zayed, and another partner were going to rescue The Pugilist Kings, so they crowded into the live stream:

[Wow, they’re screaming so horribly, this is going to be great.]

[Those Pugilist Kings have never screamed like that in the ring. What are they facing—is it The Stingers?]

[Jeez, even the Pugilist Kings can’t handle it, and Renee Morgan’s trio are going in? Isn’t that way out of their league?]

[If she doesn’t go, how else can we watch the Pugilist Kings wailing? You shut up. Come on, Morgan! If you get injured, we’ll crowdfund your hospital bills!!]

[...]

Renee Morgan was mentally prepared, but when she saw the scene, she still gasped hard.

"Should we run?" Zayed asked blankly.

Sean didn’t say anything, but his feet were already edging backward, clearly preparing to bolt.

Renee Morgan’s face was pale, gripping her torch tightly, unable to speak for a moment.

The live stream viewers were frantic, wishing they could crawl through the wires and watch the rescue:

[Morgan—no, today you’re Renee! Renee is mighty, Renee is fearless, life and death mean nothing, if you don’t like it, fight it out.]

[Who’s scared? My Renee never backs down.]

[Is the base forest chaotic or not? Renee decides.]

[Afraid? What’s afraid? Since Renee came, she’s never been scared.]

[...] The whole chat was losing it, begging Renee Morgan to hold out for just one more minute so they could watch the Pugilist Kings fall from grace and get stung in Serenfort.

The camera froze on Renee Morgan’s face, and the viewers admired her flawless beauty from all angles. Watching her pale face progress from shock, panic, to determination—even if they weren’t big on looks, it was impossible not to fall for her.

"Are you guys scared?" Renee Morgan turned to Zayed and Sean, the torchlight reflecting in her dazzingly bright eyes.

Zayed knew he couldn’t admit fear—or he’d lose the right to fight alongside her. He was a man and he didn’t want to chicken out.

Renee Morgan saw they both nodded, sighed in relief, then glanced at the carnage in front of them and spoke: "I’m going in to save them, you two cover me. Are you up for it?"

She asked again, knowing they’d already done enough just by coming here.

Zayed and Sean held their torches, one on each side behind Renee Morgan, answering with their actions.
