CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 87: CRUCIBLE OF THE VOID

Orven unbuckled his heavy outer robes, letting the embroidered fabric pool onto the stone floor. Beneath, his fitted leather tunic bore ancient, silver-threaded mana runes across the shoulders, the marks of a battle-mage who had survived the clan's bloodiest subterranean purges.

"If you use Void-Stride purely for positioning, you are wasting half its terror," Orven said, his eyes locking onto Caius with an unyielding, predator's glare. He drew a pair of curved, moon-steel daggers from his belt, infusing them with a dense, shimmering aura of spatial resistance. "A master space-weaver does not just arrive behind an opponent. He strikes during the spatial rupture, while the target's cognitive senses are still lagging behind the folded air pressure."

Caius stood thirty paces away, his expression calm, his posture loose. Deep within his soul sea, the obsidian core rotated with a quiet, menacing hum, its compressed density ready to explode at a moment's notice.

"No holdbacks, Elder?" Caius asked softly.

"If you hold back, you die," Orven snapped. "And if I hold back, I won't catch you."

Orven didn't wait for a signal. His boots struck the stone, and he vanished into a grey blur of raw spatial speed. He didn't use shadow-stepping. Instead, he employed pure, refined spatial acceleration, bending the medium around him to close thirty paces in less than a heartbeat. His left dagger flashed in a rising arc, aimed directly at Caius's collarbone, backed by a kinetic wave designed to shatter incoming mana constructs.

Caius didn't duck or parry. Void-Stride.

The obsidian core pulled. Caius stepped into his own shadow just as space collapsed behind Orven’s heel.

SHRRRRK!

The sharp glass-shattering sound ripped through the hall. Caius vanished before the silver blade could brush his tunic, reappearing instantly in the dark seam cast beneath Orven’s left armpit.

Caius's right hand was already moving, shaping a hand-blade coated in liquid obsidian mana, aimed directly at Orven's exposed ribs.

Clang!

Orven’s instincts saved him. A dense disk of blue-grey spatial barrier materialized between Caius’s hand and Orven’s side, woven from layers of overlapping dimensional fabric. The collision produced a brutal spray of black sparks. The razor-sharp intent of Caius’s obsidian energy bit deep into the spatial disk, cracking its geometric matrix instantly, but the brief delay gave Orven enough time to twist his body and leap ten paces back.

Orven landed crouching, his chest heaving, his eyes wide. A fine line of crimson blood welled on his left cheek, not from a blade, but from the raw spatial shear that had lingered in the air where Caius materialized.

"Faster..." Orven breathed, a fierce, almost unhinged grin breaking across his pale face. He wiped the blood with the back of his hand. "Your arrival is lethal, but your exit is too predictable! You anchor to the nearest deep shadow. If an opponent predicts which shadow you'll step into, they can trap the space before you emerge!"

Orven slammed his daggers together, initiating a high-tier formation. Rune Surge.

A pulse of brilliant blue light flooded the training hall from the embedded floor runes. Instantly, the pitch-black shadows cast by the cavern walls burned away under a blinding artificial glare, leaving only small, weak, flickering shadows directly beneath their own feet. The light warped the local mana density, dissolving the natural shadow stratum within the room.

"Now!" Orven shouted, rushing forward again, his blades weaving a storm of lethal steel, each stroke warping the air to create micro-vacuums that disoriented any standard tracking magic. "Where will you stride when there are no shadows left to hide in?"

Caius faced the oncoming storm of blades, his mind crystal clear. Orven was right. Relying on environmental dark spots was a structural flaw. But Void-Stride did not belong to the room. It belonged to him.

If there is no shadow, Caius thought, I will forge one.

Caius flared his obsidian core, forcing its Absolute Compression to its absolute limit. Instead of projecting a standard construct, he forcefully extruded a microscopic layer of liquid black mana through the pores of his left hand, flicking his wrist to cast a droplet of pure black energy into the empty air behind Orven’s shoulder.

The dense droplet immediately swallowed the artificial light surrounding it, creating an artificial, floating speck of absolute darkness midair. It was a localized event horizon, a manufactured shadow held together by pure gravity and spatial exclusion.

Snap.

Orven’s daggers slashed through empty air as Caius vanished again, slipping through the newly minted singularity.

CRACK!

Caius emerged out of the floating speck of shadow directly behind Orven’s upper back. This time, there was no delay. As he stepped out of the seam, the spatial collapse didn't just move his body. It dragged the surrounding atmospheric pressure along with him, creating a localized implosion that crushed the air out of the space.

Orven screamed as the sudden spatial vacuum seized his body, locking his limbs in place for a fraction of a second as the pressure differential caught him off guard.

Caius’s palm slammed hard into the center of Orven’s back.

The compressed obsidian intent flared. Orven was thrown forward like a ragdoll, skidding forty feet across the granite floor before slamming heavily into the base of the cavern wall. His moon-steel daggers clattered uselessly against the stone.

Silence returned to the training hall, broken only by Orven’s ragged coughing.

Caius stood in the center of the yard, the thin haze of spatial distortion slowly evaporating around his boots. His core hummed smoothly, completely unfazed by the double-fold exertion, recycling the residual kinetic energy back into his reservoir.

Orven slowly pushed himself up against the wall, clutching his bruised chest. He spat a mouthful of dark blood onto the stone, looking up at Caius with a mix of exhaustion, sheer terror, and absolute reverent pride.

"Creating your own spatial anchor in mid-air..." Orven rasped, letting out a breathy, wheezing laugh. "You absolute monster..."
