CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 86: CONVERGENCE OF SHADOWS
Orven had barely managed to contain the electric hum of excitement in his veins when Caius spoke, his voice cool and calculated.
"Elder," Caius began, casting a glance toward the shadowed corners of the cavern wall. "Old Bones' signature technique relied on stepping directly from one shadow to another to strike from an unseen angle. But Umbral Compression physically collapses the space between two points."
Caius turned his head, his pale eyes fixing on Orven with analytical precision.
"What happens if I combine both? Stepping into a shadow while collapsing the spatial gap to the target shadow simultaneously?"
Orven froze. The wild, academic fervor that had been brewing in his chest suddenly turned cold, replaced by a strike of pure instinctual dread.
"You..." Orven’s breath caught in his throat. His pale eyes widened as his mind raced through the complex spatial equations required for such an act. "You are talking about folding space inside a realm transition. Old Bones’ shadow-stepping moves a body through the dark ether by creating a temporary tear between the physical plane and the shadow stratum. If you introduce spatial collapse while your physical form is unmoored between those two planes..."
Orven stopped, his hands clenching into tight fists within his wide sleeves as he calculated the catastrophic implications.
"If a normal mage attempted that," Orven warned, his tone dropping into a fierce, absolute gravity, "the differential shear force would instantly shred their physical envelope into microscopic fragments. The shadow stratum and physical space act like two opposing magnetic poles when forced together. Without a core dense enough to anchor the dimensional fabric, the resulting friction would grind your spiritual pathways to dust before you could even complete the step."
Orven took a sharp step closer, his eyes burning with intense, unyielding focus. He was no longer just an instructor evaluating a prodigy; he was a master standing at the precipice of a terrifying breakthrough, desperately weighing the risks.
"However," Orven whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of fear and sheer fascination. "Your core is not normal. It is liquid obsidian, compressed to a sub-atomic density, possessing an intent sharp enough to slice foreign mana pathways. The obsidian sphere operates on absolute mass and spatial exclusion. If any structure in existence could act as a wedge to survive the pressure of a double spatial collapse, it is your core."
Caius didn't wait for him to finish.
He closed his eyes, sinking his consciousness directly into his soul sea. Deep within his Crown Core, the flawless obsidian sphere rotated silently, swallowing ambient light and radiating its razor-sharp pressure. The Absolute Compression locked his internal mana pathways into an unyielding framework, while the Razored Edge primed itself to act as a metaphysical scalpel, slicing cleanly through the friction of dimensional boundaries.

Caius cast his gaze toward the far corner of the training yard, specifically into the deep, jet-black shadow cast by the resting Arachne warrior.
He did not merely target the shadow. He targeted the underlying fabric of the shadow stratum itself, locking his core’s Singularity Pull onto the target coordinates while simultaneously initiating the phase-shift of Old Bones' shadow-step. It was a simultaneous translation across dimensions and an active geometric compression of the distance separating them.
Two techniques fused into a single, unified law of movement.
Caius stepped into his own shadow.
The reaction was instantaneous and violent.
A sharp, piercing tear echoed through the cavern. It was not the soft pop of a standard spatial fold, nor the quiet ripple of a traditional shadow-step, but a sound like thick plate glass shattering across the geometry of space itself. The ambient light in the entire training hall flickered erratically, sucked inward toward the point of entry before violently snapping backward in an inverted shockwave.
For a terrifying microsecond, Caius completely vanished from existence. Neither his physical presence nor his spirit signature registered anywhere in the physical plane. He existed purely as an intent-driven point of mass moving through the pitch-black void between worlds, sheltered only by the absolute mass of his obsidian core.
Then, space opened.
Beside the captive Arachne warrior, a razor-thin fissure of pure black shadow tore through the air. Caius materialized out of the dark seam. He did not step forward or slide into view; he simply occupied the space, his hand already extended into a fluid strike.
The movement carried zero kinetic lag, zero air resistance, and absolutely no warning sound. The laws of momentum were temporarily bypassed because the distance had not been traversed; it had been mathematically erased.
The Arachne warrior let out a frantic, high-pitched screech, all eight of its compound eyes dilating in sheer terror as it scrambled backward, its heavy carapace slamming against the cavern wall. It had sensed no approach, no buildup of mana, and no atmospheric shift. Caius had simply existed across the room, and then instantly existed right beside it.
Caius stood perfectly still beside the wall. Surrounding his silhouette was a faint, lingering haze of distorted black air, composed of spatial ripples that violently sheared outward, carving hair-thin, perfectly straight lines straight into the solid granite beneath his boots.
He turned his hand over, observing the faint obsidian sparks dissipating from his fingertips as his core stabilized.
"The entry is completely hidden," Caius murmured calmly, as if he hadn't just executed a suicidal spatial experiment. "And by using the shadow realm as a conduit, the atmospheric noise upon arrival is entirely eliminated."
Across the training yard, Orven stood paralyzed.
A cold sweat soaked his collar, but beneath the terror, a manic, triumphant laugh bubbled up in his chest. The boy hadn't just combined two techniques. He had forged an entirely new paradigm of movement, creating a flawless, silent, instant-kill assassination step that defied the fundamental laws of Nyx'ari magic.
"You called it a combination..." Orven whispered, his voice raspy as he stared at the razor-sharp slices etched into the granite around Caius's boots. "No. That was a complete fusion of dimension and geometry. What will you call it?"
Caius looked up, his pale eyes gleaming in the dim cavern light.
"Void-Stride."
