CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 83: THE SATURATED CORE
Caius did not meditate in the physical world that night. Instead, he retreated deep into the expanse of his soul sea, projecting his consciousness directly into the central chamber of the Crown Core. The physical training yard vanished, replaced by the towering, spectral throne room of dark energy. Floating high above the obsidian floor, the central Black Core rotated silently, casting a low, rhythmic pulse through the void.
In the corners of the domain, two distinct presences observed him from behind their glowing barriers.
The Flame Demon, a swirling mass of crimson embers and contained fury, hovered within the confines of its designated circle. Across from it, trapped behind her own luminous perimeter, the essence of the Arachne Princess curled in the dark, her multifaceted ethereal eyes glowing with quiet, predatory intelligence. Neither entity could step an inch outside their circle unless Caius willed it, leaving them as silent spectators to the human seated cross-legged in the absolute center of the realm.
Caius began reciting the Umbral Resonance Mantra within his mind.
In the physical world, the technique required complex breath control to align internal spirit pathways with ambient stone. But here, inside the origin point of his power, Caius could bypass physical limits entirely. He matched the mantra’s hidden frequency directly to the heartbeat of his Crown Core.
The change was subtle at first.
A thin, barely visible thread of shadowy ambient energy seeped into the domain, drifting toward Caius's chest.
The Flame Demon shifted within its circle, its crimson flames flickering. The Arachne Princess raised her head against her barrier, her dark limbs tensing as she sensed the faint trickle of mana entering the black core.
Then, the trickle snapped.
The subtle flow suddenly ruptured into a violent, roaring vortex. The atmospheric dark energy of the entire subterranean cavern outside began tearing through the spiritual veil, flooding into the Crown Core like a broken dam. An absurd, unprecedented volume of ambient mana surged straight toward Caius, swirling around him in a blinding cyclone of deep purple and pitch-black currents.
From behind her barrier, the Arachne Princess began to salivate.
Her primal beast instincts flared with intense envy. In the physical world, monsters like her had to sleep for months or devour the dense mana cores of high-tier beasts and dark elves just to advance a single stage. Beasts absorbed ambient energy slowly, passively, over decades. Yet this human was forcibly ripping the surrounding earth's energy into himself at a terrifying, unnatural pace.

The density of the void skyrocketed.
The pressure inside the realm grew so immense that even the Flame Demon’s ambient heat was crushed downward within its ring.
At the center of the storm, Caius's Black Core reached absolute capacity.
The dark sphere expanded, its surface cracking with hairline fractures of pure, condensed mana. It vibrated violently, humming at a pitch that shook the foundations of his soul sea. It was completely saturated.
BOOM!
A silent shockwave exploded outward, sending ripples across the dark domain and rattling the rune barriers of the two circles.
The unstable, gaseous black core collapsed in on itself, condensing into a single, flawless sphere. The faint translucent mist of his previous stage was completely gone. In its place rested a polished, light-absorbing orb of pure obsidian black.
It was no longer just a vessel for mana; it was a physical anomaly within his soul sea. The obsidian sphere possessed a glass-like finish so dark that it did not reflect light—it swallowed it entirely, bending the ambient rays of the Crown Core toward its center like a localized gravitational well.
The two trapped entities instantly felt its unique traits radiating through the domain.
The first was Absolute Compression. Where normal dark elf cores produced a fluid, mist-like mana, Caius's obsidian core compressed energy into a dense, semi-solid state. A single drop of this refined liquid obsidian carried the potency of an ordinary mage's entire spell pool, allowing him to weave shadow constructs with structural integrity rivaling forged steel.
The second trait was Singularity Pull. Thanks to the Umbral Resonance Mantra acting upon the core's new density, the obsidian sphere now maintained a passive, magnetic gravitational tug on external dark mana. It didn't just store energy; it continuously siphon-fed off the surrounding atmosphere, recovering his mana reserves twice as fast without requiring conscious effort.
Lastly, they felt the core's Erosion Intent and its terrifying Razored Edge.
The obsidian sphere did not hum smoothly—it spun with an imperceptible, microscopic friction that carved through the spiritual atmosphere. Its surface was so impossibly sharp that as the Flame Demon and the Arachne Princess stared at it, a phantom ache sliced through their spiritual forms. If they held their gaze for more than a second, they felt as though invisible blades were flaying their own inner cores, threatening to sever their spiritual pathways from a distance through sheer proximity.
Silence descended upon the domain.
The Flame Demon violently averted its eyes, shuddering within its boundary as the razor-like pressure threatened to split its core open. Beside it, confined within her own circle, the Arachne Princess recoiled sharply, ducking her head to break eye contact with the obsidian sphere, her spirit trembling in utter disbelief.
Caius slowly opened his eyes, feeling the terrifying depth of his new energy reservoir. The first pillar of shadow magic was no longer just a possibility—it was ready to be unleashed.
