CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 82: THE THREE PILLARS OF SHADOW
For three straight days, Orven did not allow Caius to manifest a single thread of mana.
Instead, the silent elder paced back and forth across the stone training yard, outlining the underlying principles of Nyx'ari shadow magic. Where martial arts relied on raw physical momentum, magic was a science of invisible structures.
"Shadow magic is not an elemental force like fire or water," Orven explained, his flat voice echoing off the damp cavern walls. "It is an absence, a vacuum waiting to be filled with purpose. Master mages divide shadow arts into three core disciplines."
Orven held up a single, pale finger.
"First: Umbral Manifestation. The art of creating shadow constructs. You condense ambient dark mana into solid or semi-solid physical forms, blades, barriers, or decoys. Their durability depends entirely on how tightly you compress the energy."
He raised a second finger.
"Second: Spatial Distortion. Shadow is the shadow of something. By manipulating the space an object's shadow occupies, you can warp distance. It is how high mages fold space to slip through keyholes, lengthen the reach of a blade, or distort an enemy's perception of range."
Orven raised a third finger, his eyes narrowing slightly.
"Third: Visual Inversion. The illusionary branch. Shadow magic can swallow light and bend reflection, allowing a caster to project false images, erase their physical silhouette, or cast mental illusions directly into an opponent's vision by manipulating their optic shadows."
Caius absorbed every word, his mind instantly mapping the three concepts onto his existing abilities. His Vel'drin Step was a crude form of Spatial Distortion. His shadow blades were Umbral Manifestations.
"Now," Orven said, stopping in front of Caius. "Understand the golden rule of casting. Magic is, first and always, Intent. Intent gives the shadow its shape and purpose. But Intent alone is a ghost without fuel. To manifest your intent, you require mana."
Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
Orven crossed his arms, looking down at the young ward.
"Most mages draw mana strictly from their internal cores," Orven continued. "They refine energy inside their bodies, store it, and burn it to fuel their spells. But in my personal practice, relying solely on your internal core is an amateur's limitation. The true reservoir of magic is the world around us. Ambient mana saturates the deep earth, the stone walls, the very air of these caverns."
Caius's eyes brightened with immediate realization.
A major piece of his personal puzzle suddenly clicked into place. During his Crown Core experiments, when trying to manifest complex shadow constructs or tether multiple entities, he had struggled with severe mental fatigue and rapid mana exhaustion. His Black Core was dense, but it was still a finite internal battery.
If I don't have to burn my own core energy for every construct, Caius thought, his pulse quickening. If I can tap into an external power source to fuel the intent, I can maintain physical manifestations almost indefinitely.
Caius looked up directly into the mage's pale eyes. "How do I tap into the ambient energy?"
Orven went completely still.
The elder stared at Caius for a long, heavy moment. He glanced toward the training yard entrance, then turned his gaze back to the Arachne warrior still resting quietly in the far corner.
"That is not basic magic," Orven said quietly, his voice dropping an octave. "What you are asking for is an advanced external absorption technique. If the Mage Guild knew I was teaching a ward outside our lineage..."
Orven paused, rubbing his temples as if already regretting his next words.
"The Patriarch ordered me to teach you magic," the elder muttered, letting out a soft sigh. "He did not specify where the fundamentals end. I suppose it won't hurt to give you the foundation, provided you swear never to speak its name to the other clans."
Caius gave a sharp, firm nod. "You have my word, Elder."
Orven reached into his dark robes and pulled out a small, leather-bound parchment scroll, its surface inscribed with faint silver runes.
"This is the Umbral Resonance Mantra," Orven said, handing the scroll to Caius. "It is an ancient Nyx'ari cultivation method. It teaches your spirit pathways to act like a tuning fork, matching the frequency of the subterranean dark mana around you so you can draw it directly into your techniques without passing it through your internal core first."
Caius took the scroll, his fingers tracing the cold leather.
"Study the breath cycles tonight," Orven instructed, turning toward the doorway. "Tomorrow, we see if your 'tiny affinity' is enough to align with the earth."
