CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 75: MIRROR OF THE MIND

  • Next Chapter

The next day, Caius entered his Crown Core with a lingering sluggishness in his meridians. Using Fate Sight to read absolute trajectories had been effective, but the cognitive toll had been severe. His mind still felt as though it were recovering from a long fever, and even within the Crown Core, where his consciousness normally felt clear, he could still sense the strain left behind by the previous battle.

He settled onto the elevated edge of the temple steps and leaned back against a stone pillar, allowing his gaze to wander across the vast courtyard. The two occupied sockets on the central stone spiral hummed faintly with energy. Beyond the main court, the Arachne princess remained bound within her circle, while the newly purified flame demon stood contained within its own. Both entities watched the courtyard in silence, waiting for Caius to decide what would happen next.

Caius studied them for a while, tapping his fingers thoughtfully against his knee. He wondered which of them would win if they were forced to fight each other. More importantly, he considered what he might learn by watching them clash. Their abilities were still unfamiliar to him, and observing them fight without being the direct target of their techniques could reveal methods he had not yet understood during his previous battles.

"Go fight," Caius commanded.

His voice echoed across the endless sea surrounding the temple. With a movement of his intent, he released the barriers confining both entities simultaneously.

The flame demon immediately turned toward the temple steps. Its burning eyes fixed upon Caius, and a deafening roar erupted from its throat as it launched itself forward. It crossed the courtyard with frightening speed before slamming its blazing fist directly into the transparent barrier protecting Caius's sitting area. The impact sent white-hot shockwaves rippling across the barrier, making the surrounding air tremble, but Caius did not even flinch.

Across the courtyard, the Arachne princess responded with a sharp, mocking laugh. She gestured toward the barrier and then toward the demon, her expression making it obvious that she considered its attack foolish.

The flame demon spun toward her.

Its attention shifted immediately to the new target, and it lunged across the stone floor with explosive speed.

The Arachne princess reacted without hesitation. She was faster than Caius remembered, considerably faster than she had been during their initial encounters. She began weaving mana through the air, and threads gathered around her hands as two full-bodied Arachne warrior constructs took shape. Each was formed entirely from condensed threads and possessed razor-sharp limbs capable of matching the demon's assault.

Caius watched carefully.

He suspected she had been saving those constructs for their next battle. The two warriors could have been intended to overwhelm him when their training resumed, but the flame demon had forced her to reveal them sooner than she had planned.

The two thread warriors charged forward and intercepted the demon, their sharp limbs colliding with its blazing body. While they held the creature at bay, the Arachne princess retreated several strides. Her fingers moved rapidly as she gathered more threads and shaped them into a longbow. Once the weapon was complete, she drew the string back and condensed her core energy into a glowing arrow before releasing it toward the demon.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

The arrow struck the creature's fiery torso.

A second followed immediately after.

The thread arrows pierced through the flames, causing the demon to roar in frustration and pain as it struggled against the two warrior constructs.

Caius continued watching from the temple steps until he noticed a sudden change.

His attention sharpened.

Using Far Sight, he tracked a violent surge within the demon's core structure. The energy rose rapidly, concentrating above the creature's head. Four distinct darts of condensed flame suddenly materialized in the air.

Caius focused deeper.

The floating weapons were not independent.

Thin, almost invisible threads of flame connected each dart directly to the demon's Crown Core. The threads were so faint that they would have been almost impossible to notice without the enhanced perception of his abilities.

The demon spread its arms.

The four flaming darts moved.

Guided by the threads connected to its Crown Core, they shot across the courtyard like additional limbs, each one moving independently while remaining perfectly synchronized with the demon's intent. Two of the blazing blades swept toward the Arachne warrior constructs and tore through them, while the remaining two streaked directly toward the princess.

The Arachne princess immediately abandoned her bow and threw herself into a defensive retreat, narrowly avoiding the incoming blades.

Caius leaned forward.

The sluggishness that had plagued his consciousness moments earlier disappeared from his thoughts.

He had seen something useful.

Remote constructs controlled through core-linked intent threads.

The principle could be adapted.

Caius closed his eyes and began experimenting from where he sat on the temple steps. He first channeled his Crown Core, establishing the intent and structural framework for the connecting threads. Once the intent locked into place, his Black Core responded, flooding that framework with dark mana and giving the intended structure physical form.

Two curved, pitch-black blades condensed in the air above his shoulders. Thin lines of shadow connected them to his intent, allowing him to control their position and movement without touching them.

Caius concentrated and pushed further.

His residual energy responded, and the dark threads expanded. Two additional blades began to form until four floating weapons hovered around him.

He attempted to create six.

The effort immediately became too much.

A sharp pressure spread through his head as his recovering mental state struggled to maintain the additional constructs. The extra blades flickered violently before dispersing, leaving only four.

Caius frowned.

Four was too unstable in his current condition.

He reduced the technique to two blades, allowing the excess energy to dissipate until only two perfectly formed shadow weapons remained hovering beside him.

Below the temple steps, the battle suddenly came to a halt.

The flame demon had stopped in the middle of its attack.

Its burning eyes slowly turned toward Caius.

It stared at the two black blades floating beside him.

The creature's flames intensified as its fury became obvious. It recognized what had happened. Caius had watched its technique, understood the principle behind it, and reproduced a version of it almost immediately.

The Arachne princess looked toward the demon.

A light, almost amused laugh escaped her.

Her expression seemed to mock the creature for having its secret stolen in exactly the same manner that Caius had stolen hers.

The flame demon appeared disgusted.

It no longer seemed interested in continuing the battle. It turned away from both Caius and the Arachne princess and stomped back toward its designated circle before sitting cross-legged upon the stone. Its burning eyes remained fixed on the human, carrying an unmistakable glare.

The Arachne princess merely shrugged before gliding back toward her own circle without saying a word.

Caius paid neither of them any attention.

His focus had already returned to the two floating black blades.

He adjusted their position, tested their speed, changed their rotation, and experimented with the precision of their movements. Every adjustment revealed something new about the technique.

The battle had ended, but Caius had gained something more valuable than a victory.

He had found another way to turn observation into power.
