CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 74: TRIAL OF THE BURNING MIND
Caius had expected the crown essence bead to disappear into his Black Core after the refinement was complete.
Instead, something unexpected happened.
The moment the final traces of crimson energy vanished, reality tore away. His awareness was pulled inward, ascending past his meridians and rising far beyond the dark abyss of his Black Core into the highest, most transcendent realm of his consciousness.
When his vision returned, Caius found himself standing within his Crown Core.
Beneath a pitch sky, the vast Mind Sea stretched endlessly into the dark, its obsidian waters reflecting a sourceless, ambient luminescence. Across the surface, the ancient island temple loomed, flanked by its grand circular courtyard and massive stone monoliths.
Caius turned toward the inner sanctuary.
The stone altar sat within the temple, carved with an intricate spiral containing nine distinct slots.
The first slot was already filled by the Arachne essence bead.
Now, the newly refined crown essence drew into the sanctuary, gravitating toward the spiral. Yet before it could settle, a strange disturbance rippled through the realm.
A foreign presence appeared within the courtyard.
Surrounding the main Court Circle was a continuous ring featuring nine smaller outer nodes. When the Arachne princess had manifested in the past, she had appeared within one of those dedicated nodes.
This creature had not.
It stood freely on the open stone beyond the nine nodes.
It was humanoid, though stripped of any human grace, fashioned entirely from wild, writhing flame. Continuous tongues of crimson fire licked across its body, twisting over a tall, skeletal silhouette beneath the raging inferno.
Caius stared at it.
Perhaps the distinction lies in the source, he reasoned.
The Arachne had been a magical beast driven by core instincts. This essence belonged to something higher: a being endowed with a true, sentient mind.
The creature slowly turned toward him.
Two blazing apertures ignited within its molten face. Its mouth stretched into a predatory grin, revealing long fangs of concentrated flame that dripped liquid energy before evaporating into sparks.
Caius felt the suffocating heat even from across the courtyard.
The creature lowered its body. The flames surrounding its limbs suddenly intensified.
It lunged.
A backdraft of primal fire erupted behind it, propelling the entity across the courtyard at terrifying speed.
Caius activated the Eye of the Loom: Far Sight instantly.
Rather than locating a centralized, predictable mana core typical of a beast, his vision revealed a chaotic storm of violently churning energy concentrated throughout its burning form.
Claws of pure heat slashed through the space where his chest had been.
Caius engaged Shadow Step.
Within the pitch environment of his Crown Core, his body dissolved seamlessly into the surrounding darkness, slipping past the strike and reforming several paces back without traveling conventionally through space.
The sheer thermal aura singed his clothes, but Caius held his composure.
He activated the Eye of the Loom: Inner Sight.
If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
The mental strain hit his mind immediately, a sharp ache behind his eyes, but the world around him slowed into distinct currents. With Inner Sight, he observed how energy traveled through the creature's pathways, identifying the preparation of its attacks right before they were released.
It doesn't attack with trained form, Caius analyzed, retreating two bounds across the stone floor. It attacks with pure momentum and explosive heat.
The flaming demon let out a silent, roaring surge of fire, lunging forward with its jaws wide. Molten energy dripped from its fangs, vaporizing before touching the courtyard stone.
Caius channeled the power of his first slot, deploying his Arachne Thread Art.
Combining his perception with physical black mana, he manifested dark threads and anchored them directly into the surrounding atmosphere and courtyard stone.
Thread Binding.
The taut, physical black strands wrapped around the demon's burning wrists and ankles, restricting its violent forward velocity and forcing its movement into a predictable trajectory.
With the entity anchored, Caius drew his short swords instantly, channeling mana through his internal pathways via Vel'drin Step.
He planted his rear foot and adopted the Umbral Twin-Edge foundation form. Holding Nightdancer in his lead hand, he executed a sharp feint with his secondary blade using the Horizon Cast rhythm, driving the point directly toward the demon's eye.
The flaming entity reacted purely on instinct, raising a clawed hand to swat the distraction away.
The anchored threads pulled its arm taut.
That was the opening Caius needed.
Exploding forward with Vel'drin Step, Caius dipped beneath the monster's raised arm. He engaged Shadow Bind, catching the entity's descending wrist against the spine of his off-hand blade, deflecting the wild force over his shoulder while pivoting past its lead flank.
In the same fluid breath, he delivered the Twin Arc.
Both elven short swords cut through the air in a synchronized, cross-cutting sweep directly across the creature's exposed torso.
The blades bit not into flesh, but into a core of dense elemental mass, sending a shockwave of thermal energy up Caius's arms. But as the fine steel bit deep into the flaming body, Caius unleashed the true power of his Black Core.
Necrotic Erosion.
Pitch-black energy surged from his core, coating both blades and transferring directly into the wound.
The residual dark energy immediately took hold inside the demon's internal mana structure. The wild red flames surrounding its chest sputtered, turning a dark, sickly crimson as the necrotic energy began to eat away at the circulating fire.
The demon shrieked, a sound like tearing iron and roaring fires, stepping back as its body attempted to regenerate the damaged tissue.
When it fed its internal heat into the wound to cleanse it, the Black Core's energy reacted violently, consuming the fresh mana and spreading decay deeper into its skeletal frame.
Caius didn't hesitate. He knew the mental burden of maintaining Inner Sight inside his Crown Core would exhaust him if the fight dragged on. He needed to end it quickly.
Eye of the Loom: Fate Sight.
His Crown Core pulsed at the apex of his spiritual consciousness. Instantly, translucent, radiant lines overlaid his vision, mapping the predetermined trajectories of the demon's frantic retaliation. He saw three distinct paths of fire rising from its hands and jaw before the entity even moved a muscle.
The demon roared, sweeping both arms outward to detonate a circular wave of primal flame across the courtyard.
Caius moved before the fire erupted. Guided by the luminous lines of Fate Sight, he stepped cleanly into the single dead zone between the sweeping arcs of fire. The inferno washed past him on both sides, scorching the stone floor but leaving him entirely untouched.
Closing the final distance, Caius shifted his grip, seamlessly blending his foundation training into Sereth's Secret Art.
He didn't execute a rigid sequence; he listened to Sereth's core lesson: One weapon creates the problem. The other exploits it.
Operating on a Split-Stream Cadence, Caius drove Nightdancer in a slow, sweeping upper arc toward the demon's head, drawing its focus upward. The demon raised its flaming guard to catch the sweeping threat.
Simultaneously, Caius's off-hand blade moved at double the speed, plunging low beneath the bound guard and piercing directly into the dark, necrotic crack he had carved into the creature's chest earlier.
The short sword sank to the hilt.
Caius flooded the wound with a full burst of Black Core energy, igniting internal Black Flame right inside the entity's energy matrix.
The demon froze.
The pitch-black fire tore through its skeletal frame from the inside out, burning away its violent will and unraveling its unstable structure. The wild crimson flames turned black, fractured into thousands of harmless embers, and collapsed onto the ancient courtyard stone.
The chamber fell dead silent.
Caius withdrew his blades, his breathing heavy and sweat dripping from his chin as he deactivated his sight arts. The mental drain receded into a dull ache.
Where the flaming demon had stood, a crystalized spark of dark red flame hovered in the air. Driven by an invisible pull, the purified essence floated toward the stone table inside the temple, settling directly into the second slot along the nine-slot spiral, right beside the Arachne bead with a heavy, resounding click.
A rush of refined, elemental understanding washed through Caius's pathways, expanding the density of his Black Core and solidifying his foundation once more.
Caius stood tall above the vast Mind Sea of his Crown Core, sheathing Nightdancer at his hip. He looked toward the temple spiral, knowing that this second slot was only another step in what his bloodline was destined to unlock.
