CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 65: THE OPEN BLADE ART

  • Next Chapter

The subterranean training chamber of House Vel'drin was silent save for the harsh, rhythmic sound of breathing.

Caius stood in the center of the basalt hall, dual wooden training swords held loosely in a low guard. Opposite him stood the last of the Fifty Blades—a grizzled, three-hundred-year-old veteran whose dual-scimitar style relied on deceptive fluid shifts and sudden, kinetic bursts.

The warrior lunged, his right blade carving a high arc meant to force Caius to parry upward, while his left blade swept low to take the boy's footing.

Caius didn't move his weapons to parry.

Instead, his eyes—glinting with the subtle, multi-layered focus of the Eye of the Loom—read the sequence before the wood even cut the air. Through Far Sight, he anchored onto the veteran’s core. Through Inner Sight, he tracked the exact surge of mana flooding into the dark elf’s lead thigh and wrist. Through Fate Sight, the trajectory of both blades materialized in his mind as luminous, woven strands crossing the air.

Caius took a half-step sideways. He didn't just dodge; he slipped through the exact dead space between both weapon arcs. With a flick of his wrists, Caius used the dual short-sword concepts learned from Master Sereth, sweeping his right wooden blade along the guard's wrist to redirect his momentum, while his left blade tapped lightly against the veteran's throat.

The dark elf froze.

Caius didn't step back. He didn't reset his stance. His posture remained fluid, entirely devoid of a set guard.

The veteran retreated, reset, and attacked again—this time changing his tempo, executing a rare triple-thrust combination unique to his bloodline. Caius met the first thrust with a hard deflecting parry, incorporated a Shadow Step to shift instantly into the guard's blind spot, anchored an invisible Arachne Thread to the air behind the warrior's heel, and brought both short blades to a halt against the dark elf's ribs.

The veteran lowered his weapons, panting heavily, his eyes wide with shock. "What... what style is that?"

Caius didn't answer. He couldn't.

He stood frozen in the middle of the arena. His dual wooden swords hovered in the air, his pupils dilated as his Crown Core began to spin at a terrifying speed.

The months of relentless torment, the fifty distinct combat styles, the endless iterations of attacks, counters, and footwork—all of it suddenly collided inside his mind. Every technique he had witnessed from the Fifty Blades, every shadow movement, every dual-blade variation from Sereth, every thread manipulation from the Arachne Princess, and every predictive vision from the Eye of the Loom snapped together like threads weaving into an infinite tapestry.

He was having an epiphany.

Old Bones, who had been resting against his usual stone pillar, straightened up instantly. His sharp, yellowed eyes locked onto Caius. He felt the terrifying, quiet aura gathering around the boy—a state of pure martial enlightenment.

Without a word, Old Bones stepped onto the arena floor. He raised a single hand and gestured toward the Fifty Blades lined along the walls.

"Leave," Old Bones commanded, his voice cold and absolute. "All of you. Out. Now."

The dark elf warriors hesitated for a fraction of a second, but the suffocating pressure radiating from the old master left no room for debate. They bowed quickly and filed out of the subterranean chamber in dead silence, heavy basalt doors sealing behind them.

Old Bones walked to the edge of the central ring, sat down cross-legged on the cold stone floor, rested his arms over his knees, and waited.

Inside Caius’s mind, the world had exploded into light and thread.

He saw the foundation of all sword styles. Traditional martial arts relied on forms, stances, and pre-set answers: if the enemy cuts high, parry high; if the enemy thrusts, step aside. But forms were static. Forms could be studied, countered, and broken.

Caius possessed the Crown Core and the Eye of the Loom. He possessed the ability to link Far Sight to locate the core, Inner Sight to read mana circulation, and Fate Sight to see the trajectory of intent before it physicalized. When combined with the Crown Core, it created Spell and Art Prediction—a system that read the enemy’s very thought process.

Why limit himself to a style with a beginning and an end?

Caius began to synthesize everything. He took the brutal, direct force of the heavy-armed guards; the blinding speed of the rapier masters; the fluid, circular parries of Sereth’s dual-blade style; the spatial displacement of Shadow Steps; and the atmospheric control of his Arachne Thread Art.

He stripped away their rigid forms and kept only their essence.

He called it The Open Blade.

It was not a style; it was a living, evolving framework. The Open Blade possessed no set stance, no fixed guards, and no defined techniques. It was a sword style that refused to stop learning during a fight. Every strike an enemy threw, every counter they attempted, every subtle shift in their weight would be absorbed by the Open Blade in real-time, processed through his Crown Core, and integrated instantly into his own arsenal.

It was a sword art designed to devour other sword arts.

Hours passed in total silence. Old Bones remained seated like a carved stone statue, watching the boy. He saw thin, visible strands of black thread-mana and shadowy mist passively spiraling around Caius's body, expanding and contracting in rhythm with his breath.

Finally, the dark energy dissolved back into Caius's chest. His eyelids flickered open.

The multi-layered luminescence in his eyes slowly faded back to his natural gaze. He lowered his wooden swords, his breathing deep and even.

Old Bones didn't get up immediately. He tilted his head, studying the fourteen-year-old before him.

"You found it, didn't you?" Old Bones asked softly, his raspy voice echoing in the empty hall.

Caius looked down at his hands, then at the wooden short swords. "It doesn't have a final form," Caius said quietly, speaking in flawless, unhurried Nyx'ari. "It absorbs everything. The Fifty Blades, Master Sereth's style, the threads, the shadows. Every time I fight, it changes."

Old Bones let out a low, gravelly laugh that turned into a quiet, raspy chuckle. He stood up, shaking his head in absolute disbelief.

"The Open Blade," Old Bones muttered, reading the intent radiating off the boy. "A style that never closes... a style that devours the opponent's strength while they fight you."

Old Bones walked over to the rack and picked up two steel short swords, tossing them toward Caius. Caius caught them cleanly by the hilts, the polished metal gleaming in the dim torchlight.

"The wooden swords are finished," Old Bones said, a razor-thin smile touching his weathered face. "The Fifty Blades won't be teaching you anything more. From tomorrow on, they won't be your teachers, Caius. They're going to be your prey."
