CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 64: THE SPIDER WITHIN A CROWN
That evening, after another grueling session with the Fifty Blades, Caius returned to his personal quarters and prepared for meditation. His body throbbed with the dull ache of the day’s training, dark bruises purpling beneath his tunic where wooden blades had caught him off guard. Yet he paid the physical exhaustion no mind. Two years sounded like a generous reprieve to those who had granted it, but Caius knew time was an indifferent resource. Every idle moment was a gift surrendered to the Shadowblade awaiting him in the arena.
He sat cross-legged upon the cold basalt floor, closed his eyes, and lowered his consciousness into the subterranean depths of his mind.
The physical world dissolved, replaced by the familiar dark expanse of his soulscape. Black water stretched toward an infinite horizon beneath a starless sky. Beyond the still, ink-black sea rested the ancient island, housing the ruined temple and the circular stone courtyard where nine concentric rings remained etched into the floor.
Caius stepped onto the stone courtyard.
The Arachne Princess was already waiting.
Her four crimson eyes fixed upon him with the same undying hatred she had carried since their first encounter. The moment his foot touched the outermost ring, she moved.
Her body blurred forward, her bone-like blades slicing through the air with lethal velocity. Caius raised his mental projection of a blade to parry the first strike, the impact vibrating through his soul-form. Before he could recover, three more limbs struck from alternating angles.
Caius activated Far Sight, locking onto her internal core, tracking her presence even as her movements blurred into motion. Simultaneously, he opened Inner Sight, following the luminous streams of mana cascading through her limbs, searching for the subtle muscle twitches that telegraphed her strikes.
It was not enough. The princess had evolved.
Her Thread Art had morphed into something far more sophisticated than simple binding lines or razor-sharp tripwires. The threads moved with eerie, calculated grace, twisting through the air in geometric patterns he had never seen before.
He parried, slipped beneath a heavy overhead slash, and pivoted away from a sweeping tail strike, only to find a delicate web of pale silk spreading across the stone beneath his boots. He leaped backward before the strands could trap his ankles.
The princess did not pursue. Instead, she raised one pale, multi-jointed hand.
Caius watched intently through Inner Sight. Mana surged from her beast core, flowing down her arm and dividing into dozens of micro-streams at her fingertips. With frightening precision, her fingers began to dance, weaving the mana threads together like a master seamstress.
The strands twisted, knotted, and took shape. A spider emerged.
It was small compared to the princess, but it possessed a complete, anatomically distinct body and eight delicate legs forged entirely from condensed thread-mana. The creature dropped onto the stone floor and immediately skittered toward him.

Caius struck it down with a single downward cut. The construct collapsed into loose, dissolving strands, but two more were already taking shape at the princess's fingertips. Then five. Then a dozen.
She was not trying to overpower him directly; she was deploying autonomous, living extensions of her Thread Art. The silk spiders swarmed across the courtyard, approaching from his blind spots, forcing him to divide his focus while she prepared her main offensive.
One construct slipped past his guard, leaping onto his forearm and sinking its thread-fangs into his skin. Phantom pain flared through his nervous system, leaving a jagged, bleeding gash across his spirit-form.
Caius stepped back, maintaining his breath, but instead of panicking, he focused entirely on her hands.
With Far Sight pinning her core and Inner Sight dissecting her mana flow, he watched the precise moment of creation. He saw how her Crown Core shaped the initial mental blueprint—the intent—while her beast core supplied the raw energy, using the threads as a physical medium to give that intent life.
If she can weave intent into form, Caius thought, why can't I?
He retreated several paces, creating distance from the advancing swarm. He centered his mind, calling upon his own Crown Core.
A spider, he willed, forming the mental blueprint with absolute clarity.
His Crown Core resonated instantly, its structural authority reaching down to grip the unyielding, dark energy of his Black Core. The black energy answered, surging upward like liquid night.
His first attempt failed. The raw dark mana shattered before taking shape, dispersing into harmless dark mist.
Caius did not waver. He recalled his training as a thread-weaver, viewing the energy not as a fluid mass, but as individual strands of tension and intent. He recalled the dance of the princess's fingers, the division of mana, the interweaving knots.
He tried again.
Thin, pitch-black strands of dark energy spun out from his Crown Core, knitting together in mid-air. One strand formed the carapace; eight finer threads extended into legs. A moment later, a small, obsidian spider dropped onto the courtyard floor.
It was crude and noticeably smaller than the princess's creations, but it was real. It moved under his direct will.
Across the courtyard, the Arachne Princess froze. All four of her crimson eyes locked onto the black construct. For the first time, the blind rage in her gaze faltered, replaced by stark, visceral shock.
She realized what he had just done. He was stealing her art in real-time.
"Attack," Caius commanded mentally.
The black spider lunged forward. The princess instinctively wove a pale silk spider to meet it. The two constructs collided in mid-air, black and white threads tangling violently on the stone until both dissolved.
The battle transformed into a terrifying clash of constructs. The princess wove faster, her hands becoming a blur as she birthed larger, faster spiders that scampered along threads suspended high in the air. Caius answered in kind, weaving black constructs from his shadow-mana, refining his control with every attempt.
He discovered that by pouring denser Black Core energy into a construct, it became a heavy, armoured brawler. By thinning the strands, it became lightning-fast.
The princess attacked with desperate, relentless fury, raining silk constructs and blade strikes upon him. Threads tore through Caius's shoulders and ribs, painting the stone with spiritual blood, but he refused to yield. Every wound forced his mind to sharpen; every strike forged his Crown Core into something stronger.
When his spiritual energy finally hit its limit, the courtyard began to dissolve. The temple and the underground sea faded into darkness.
The Arachne Princess stood amid the remnants of her shredded webs, staring at him as he faded. The hatred remained in her eyes, but now it was joined by a deep, cautious wariness.
Caius opened his eyes in his quiet room in the Underdark, his physical chest heaving as he returned to his body.
By day, the Fifty Blades forged his physical combat. In the library, he mastered the history, language, and grand tactics of war. And by night, within the depths of his Crown Core, he unlocked the true nature of his power.
The Crown could learn. The Crown could adapt. And through the Black Core, his intent became reality.
Caius looked down at his calloused hands. Two years remained before the Trial of Fate, and he would devour every single second.
