CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 41: THE SUMMONS OF THE MOON
The cavern slowly exhaled.
The frantic, shrieking tide had dissolved into a sullen silence, broken only by the steady drip-drip of acidic slime and the low moans of wounded dark elves binding their lacerated limbs across the blood-soaked stone.
Caius barely noticed them. His pulse still thrummed with the aftershock of the Flow Step, his breathing measured as he stepped past the wreckage of the battlefield and approached the colossal, severed head of the princess.
Her multi-faceted eyes were dull, the brilliant crimson fury of her mana completely extinguished. But something else caught his eye, glinting dully just beneath the torn edge of thick, split chitin near the crown.
Caius knelt. With the tip of Nightdancer, he carefully chipped away the remaining armor until a small, perfectly spherical object rolled free into the dust.
He picked it up. It was heavy, obsidian-dark, and utterly dead to his senses: no pulse, no thermal heat, no crackling mana. It felt less like a beast part and more like a dropped stone, yet it absorbed the dim cavern light like a sponge.
"What is that?" Sereth asked, walking up beside him.
Caius held up the small black bead. "I don't know. Can I keep it?"
Sereth glanced from the strange orb to the mountain-sized corpse behind it. "Keep it. And take the princess's beast core while you're at it."
Caius’s eyes widened. "Really?"
"You killed her," Sereth replied simply. "Claim your spoils."
Nobody stopped him. The surrounding dark elf survivors watched in quiet awe as the human boy climbed onto the massive carcass, his hands slick with ichor as he sliced open the primary core chamber. When he finally heaved the massive, pulsing crimson crystal free, it was easily three times the size of any core he had harvested before.
A broad, genuine grin broke across Caius's face as he tucked the heavy prize safely among his gear, sliding the mysterious black bead right beside it.
The grizzled tavern keeper, Old Bones, crossed his arms, watching the boy with a mix of dry amusement and begrudging respect. "Is he a scavenger now?"
Sereth didn’t answer.
Old Bones shot him a sideways glance. "Well?"
Sereth remained silent for a beat longer, his gaze fixed on the boy before turning his full attention to the old assassin. "Old Bones."
The veteran blinked. "What?"
"Be his ward until he reaches sixteen."
Caius froze, his head snapping up. "My ward?"
Old Bones’s jaw dropped slightly, a rare look of shock cracking his weathered facade. "Are you out of your mind? Why would I...?"

"Just make the oath," Sereth interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into an absolute, unyielding command.
Old Bones stared at him for a long, heavy moment. Then, with a long, aggrieved groan that sounded like grinding rocks, he rubbed the back of his neck. "By the abyss... you always bring a mountain of trouble wherever you crawl."
"Make the oath."
Old Bones looked down at Caius, who was still clutching his gear with wide eyes. The old assassin let out a sigh, raised his right hand, and pressed two fingers over his heart.
"I swear by the Shadow and by the blood of my house," Old Bones recited, his voice echoing flatly across the cavern, "that until Caius Macrae reaches the age of sixteen, I will take full responsibility for his safety, shelter, and protection as my ward."
The air rippled. A dense, invisible wave of mana rolled outward from the old man's hand, pressing against the stone floor before sinking into the earth.
The vow was sealed in blood and binding magic.
Old Bones dropped his hand, glaring at Sereth. "There. Satisfied?"
Sereth nodded once. "Yes."
Before Caius could process the sudden shift in his life, the hair on the back of his neck stood up.
The shadows at the far end of the cavern seemed to deepen, bleeding outward along the stone walls. Sereth’s expression instantly turned hard as iron, his hand dropping to the hilt of his sword.
Across the camp, the dark elf warriors tensed, their weapons coming back up.
Figures slid out from the darkness without a sound. They wore razor-sharp, light-absorbing armor etched with silent runes, their faces hidden behind featureless masks. They carried weapons forged for instant, silent slaughter.
The Shadowblades. The elite executioners of the realm.
They moved with terrifying unison, parting the ranks of the dark elves as if walking through mist, until their leader stopped dead before Sereth.
"Sereth of House Vel'drin," the lead assassin spoke, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. "You are commanded to present yourself before the Absolute Moon."
Sereth didn't flinch. "I expected as much."
"You have failed your mission," the Shadowblade continued, his gaze shifting slightly. "And we have secondary orders. We are to bring the human child into custody."
Old Bones immediately stepped into the space between them, his hand resting casually on the hilt of his dagger. "He is my ward."
The Shadowblade's posture did not soften. "He stays with us. That is not a request."
"He is bound by my oath," Old Bones growled, a dangerous crimson spark flickering in his eyes. "Try taking him."
Before steel could clear leather, a heavy, suffocating pressure dropped over the entire cavern.
It wasn't a threat of violence. It was a suffocating, ancient weight that made the very air feel like lead. Every dark elf in the chamber, even the seasoned veterans and the elite Shadowblades, instantly dropped their heads, their eyes averted toward the stone floor in absolute submission.
From the deepest cleft of the cavern mouth, a single figure stepped into the light.
He was tall, draped in dark, immaculate robes that seemed to swallow the light around them. His face was carved from timeless stone, untouched by the chaos of the swarm, but his presence alone commanded the entire cavern.
Sereth looked toward him. For the first time since Caius had known the fierce veteran, his shoulders bowed just a fraction. He lowered his head.
"Father."
The patriarch of House Vel'drin did not look at his son. His dark, fathomless eyes swept past Sereth, locking entirely onto Caius.
He studied the boy: the remnants of the Black Flame still clinging to his fingers, the heavy beast core in his pack, and the strange black bead clutched in his hand.
The patriarch’s voice rang out, cold and absolute as winter ice.
"The child is no longer merely a ward of an individual."
Old Bones stiffened.
The patriarch’s gaze drifted slowly to the retired assassin. "He is now a ward of Clan Vel'drin. And you, old friend... you will come as well."
Old Bones closed his eyes, letting out a long, defeated breath. "Of course."
The Shadowblades melted back into the silence of the dark. Sereth stood tall once more, his face etched in solemn acceptance.
Caius stood frozen in the center of it all, slowly tightening his fist around the mysterious black bead in his pocket. Only moments ago, he had been celebrating a victory over the brood. Now, the sprawling machinery of the dark elf nobility had closed its jaws around him.
Whatever waited for him beneath the Absolute Moon, his old life was truly, irrevocably over.
