CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 40: THE GOLDEN THREAD

  • Next Chapter

Caius flooded his eyes with mana, sharpening the world until the chaotic blur of the battlefield resolved into crisp, lethal clarity.

Through Far Sight, the frantic scramble of the arachne swarm mapped out like a grid of glowing candles. But his focus bypassed them entirely, locking onto the monolithic silhouette of the princess.

Not stopping there, he pushed deeper, triggering Inner Sight.

The spectral veil peeled back. The princess’s towering form transformed into a anatomy of circulating power. Deep within her chest, a crimson core pulsed with violent, crimson energy, pumping raw fury through her massive limbs.

Yet, as his vision adjusted to the subtler strata of mana, something else caught his eye.

At the very crown of her head, nestled between a cluster of secondary eyes, throbbed an entirely different pulse—a blinding, intricate golden core.

Caius’s breath hitched. It didn't circulate power through her body like the crimson engine. Instead, countless filament-thin threads of golden light extended outward from it, stretching across the cavern like a web of living wire.

He tracked one. Then a dozen. Then hundreds.

The threads anchored deep into the mana cores of the surrounding swarm. Every minor arachne in the chamber was tethered to this single source. The princess wasn't just commanding them through simple instinct or sound; she was riding a literal network of shared consciousness and synchronized energy.

A hive-mind grid.

If he severed that flow... would the swarm shatter? Would the lesser beasts lose their coordination entirely?

He didn't have time to calculate the systemic collapse. He only needed to kill the target.

The princess reared back, her immense forelimbs trembling as she prepared to unleash another devastating wave.

Darkness welled up from the depths of Caius's chest. The Black Core surged, venting oily, wispy plumes of cold mist that clung to his skin, wrapping around his arms and coiling tightly along the length of his blade. His eyes darkened into abyssal voids.

He tightened his grip around Nightdancer.

Ahead, cutting a bloody swath through the vanguard, Sereth’s voice boomed over the din. "Come on!"

The old assassin battered a lunging brute aside with his saber, his eyes flashing toward the boy. "Move, boy!"

Caius moved.

An elite arachne snapped at the space he had occupied a fraction of a second earlier. But there was nothing there—only a lingering dark afterimage that dissolved into wisps of smoke as the creature's mandibles slammed shut on empty air.

By then, Caius was already gone.

Flow Step.

He vanished into a streak of midnight motion. He didn't fight the chaos; he rode it, weaving through microscopic gaps in the frontline melee, slipping between razor-sharp legs and spraying acid with the terrifying grace of a phantom. Every step of the ancient movement drill was rewritten by instinct, turning his advance into a seamless, untouchable blur.

The princess snapped her head down, her multifaceted eyes sweeping the cavern in frantic search of the intruder.

For a single heartbeat, she lost him.

Then a shadow fell over her eyes.

A human boy, wreathed in suffocating black fire, hung suspended in the air directly above her head.

Caius gathered every drop of power he possessed. The Black Flame roared within his veins, surging down his arms and detonating along the edge of Nightdancer until the dark steel shrieked under the sheer density of the condensed energy.

He had found the weakness. He had the opening.

He channeled every ounce of his training, every memory of Cullum’s lessons, and every spark of his burgeoning strength into a single, unyielding intent.

He descended.

Nightdancer swept out in a blinding crescent, a flash of pure, light-devouring dark.

The blade didn't just cut; it erased. It sheared clean through thick, overlapping chitin, through dense muscle, and straight through the primary crimson mana engine.

At the exact same instant, the edge of his blade clipped the crown of her head, slicing through the golden core.

The golden network shattered. Across the cavern, the hundreds of glowing threads instantly snapped like over-strung lute strings, dissolving into harmless sparks of light.

The crimson surge inside the princess flared into a blinding, erratic supernova—and then died.

The massive creature instantly froze mid-motion.

Its terrifying, multi-eyed gaze tilted awkwardly. The stone floor, the sprawling cavern, and the fleeing swarm began to rotate wildly in her fading vision.

Why is the ground moving? a primitive, fading fragment of consciousness wondered. Why is everything leaning sideways?

Then, as her vision rolled one final time, she saw it.

Her own colossal, armored body.

Standing rigidly above her.

Headless.

A geyser of dark, boiling ichor erupted from the severed neck like an inverted waterfall as the mountain of flesh collapsed into the dust.

The world went utterly, peacefully black.

The princess arachne was dead.
