CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 164: THE WEAVERS OF THE BLACK SHELL
As they stepped off the catwalk, Caius bypassed the main exit stairs, taking a narrow, unlit corridor that veered deeper into the basalt bedrock. Old Bones followed silently, his sharp eyes scanning the damp stone walls.
At the end of the passage, a heavy reinforced ironwood door swung open without a sound.
The air inside was drastically different, becoming hotter, drier, and filled with the metallic scraping of fine tools and the dry tapping of thousands of tiny legs. Old Bones stepped through the threshold and froze, his gray eyebrows shooting up in absolute astonishment.
It was an automated fabrication chamber.
Thousands of small, hand-sized Arachne drones, acting as scuttling workers with reinforced carapaces, scurried across stone worktables, weaving threads of hardened shadow-silk and fitting thin plates of jet-black chitin together. At the center of the workshop stood a solitary male humanoid Arachne. Unlike the six hundred and fifty warriors above who wielded lethal blade-arms, this creature held intricate metal chisels, fine rune-needles, and shaping hammers.
"What in the deep dark..." Old Bones muttered under his breath, taking in the sight of racks upon racks of gleaming, scale-patterned black armor. He glanced at Caius, his jaw tight, thinking that his lord truly hid secrets within secrets.
Caius walked past a row of armor stands, resting his hand on a sleek, dark breastplate.
"Two years ago, after the first six hundred and fifty survivors completed their major molt into humanoid forms, they shed their original spider-chitin skins," Caius spoke smoothly, his voice echoing in the hum of the workshop. "Most saw the molted shells as useless refuse. But when I visited the hatchery, this one knelt before me."
Caius gestured to the master artisan Arachne, who bowed his head with quiet, absolute devotion.

"He was the weakest among the humanoid males," Caius continued. "His core was too fragile for frontline combat, and his blade-arms were brittle. But he possessed a rare, bizarre bloodline mutation, giving him the innate ability to manipulate, soften, and re-weave molted Arachne skin like leather and clay. He spent months collecting the shed chitin, tailoring it, and presented me with a complete suit of armor made entirely from his brothers' molted skins."
Old Bones stepped closer, examining a suit mounted on a mannequin shaped for an elf.
Unlike the heavy, rigid black steel worn by standard infantry, this armor looked like thousands of interlocking obsidian scales. When Old Bones touched it, he gasped slightly. It was surprisingly light and supple to the touch, almost as soft as fine dragon-leather, yet when he pressed his thumbnail into a scale, the material instantly hardened into impenetrable stone.
"He discovered a way to re-shape and tailor the molted chitin to fit any humanoid frame," Caius said, a faint smirk touching his lips. "For the past year, every dark elf shadowblade and barbarian elite in our Quick Reaction Legion, anyone who proved absolute and unwavering loyalty to me, was secretly outfitted with a suit."
Caius picked up a discarded gauntlet from a workbench, his violet eyes burning.
"I tested the final design personally," Caius revealed softly. "I channeled my own magic directly into it. It can absorb and completely disperse physical impacts and high-grade magical attacks up to half of my full power without taking a scratch. Only when I pushed past fifty percent did the chitin crack. Against standard high elven solar spells and mithril blades, it is practically indestructible."
Old Bones ran his fingers across the obsidian scales of a completed set, a cold, breathless laugh rising from his chest.
He thought of the two hundred dark elf mercenaries and the barbarian elites guarding the upper walls. Lorien’s army expected to fight men in iron and dark elves in simple leather. Instead, they were marching straight into a legion clad in light, fire-resistant, and magic-dampening dragon-grade scale armor forged from the molted skin of subterranean horrors.
"Robust, flexible, and immune to their solar magic..." Old Bones rasped, staring at Caius with profound, terrifying reverence. "My Lord, you didn't just build a fortress. You built an army that cannot be cut."
Caius turned back toward the exit, his dark mantle sweeping over the stone floor.
"Tell the artisan to release the final batch to the garrison," Caius commanded. "The High Elves are arriving. It's time to see how their golden swords hold up against our black scales."
