CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 163: THE SHADOWED HATCHERY
Deep beneath the Obsidian Citadel, far below the battlements where the threat of High Lord Lorien’s marching host hung in the cold night air, lay the subterranean vault.
Caius walked along the damp basalt catwalk, his dark mantle brushing against the stone railing. Beside him shuffled Old Bones, his long saber clicking softly against his hip with every step. The air was heavy with humidity, iron, and the overwhelming scent of dense, refined shadow magic.
High above them, embedded into the vaulted ceiling, hung the massive artificial obsidian crystal Caius had forged years ago. It thrummed with a steady, deep heartbeat, bathing the entire cavernous hall in a soft, suffocating purple light and continuously showering the floor below with cascades of raw black mana.
Caius looked down over the railing, a quiet satisfaction settling in his eyes.
Nearly two years had passed since the initial broods had hatched. What had begun as nine hundred tiny hatchlings scrambling over silk nests had transformed into a terrifying legion. Over five thousand Arachnes now filled the cavernous depths beneath the fortress.
Of the original nine hundred that had survived the first brutal defense of the Citadel, six hundred and fifty had weathered the test of battle and time. Sustained by a relentless diet of pure obsidian energy and two years of maturation, those survivors had completed their first major molting stage.
They had evolved into the elite vanguard of the Citadel: humanoid Arachnes.
Standing erect on two powerful legs clad in natural obsidian chitin armor, their upper bodies resembled cut marble warriors. Each held twin curved blades forged from dense shadow-steel, while four razor-sharp chitinous blade-arms extended from their backs like lethal wings.
Beneath them on the lower cavern floors scuttled the remaining four thousand three hundred and fifty younger broods, still in their base spider-chitin forms, their multiple eyes gleaming in the dark as they passively absorbed the ceiling crystal's radiating mana.

At the center of the main webbed pavilion stood the Arachne father.
He had grown even taller, his aura dense, refined, and undeniably powerful. His humanoid torso glistened with dark, metallic health, and his pale features carried a quiet, commanding dignity. Surrounding him in comfortable, silk-draped nests were his three massive female Arachne consorts, his harem, their mandibles clicking in content docility as they oversaw the younger broods.
Old Bones leaned against the stone railing, looking down at the male Arachne. A wide, raspy chuckle escaped the old assassin's throat.
"Having an easy life down here, aren't you, young prince?" Old Bones called out, his voice echoing across the vault. "Living like a king in a warm nest while the rest of us prepare for a bloody siege on the surface!"
The Arachne father looked up. His obsidian eyes met Old Bones’s, but instead of the murder-filled rage he had displayed two years ago when forced into the role of breeder, the creature simply let out a low, dignified hum.
In the beginning, he had been furious. He was a noble-tier warrior, a high-grade monster, forced into the humble task of a brood father. But over the past two years, as he fed continuously on the divine dark energy radiating from the Sovereign's ceiling crystal and sired thousands of hyper-evolved offspring, his core had reached levels of power he couldn't have dreamed of achieving on the surface. He had gained immense strength simply by staying in the vault, surrounded by luxury and power.
What was there to be angry about? the father thought, bowing his head respectfully toward Caius. The Sovereign's wisdom truly sees decades ahead.
"My Lord," Old Bones rasped, turning to Caius with genuine awe in his eyes. "Six hundred and fifty humanoid elites, and over four thousand heavy shock-chitin broods. The High Elves think they are marching toward a surface fortress, but they have no idea an entire legion of subterranean horrors is waiting to crawl out from beneath their boots."
Caius looked down at the silent, disciplined legion below. His violet eyes burned with a pale, sovereign light.
"Lorien marches with two thousand soldiers and five hundred Sentinels," Caius said smoothly. "He believes his light will cleanse this valley. He doesn't know that the very ground he walks upon is hollow, and filled with my shadow."
Caius turned away from the catwalk, his dark mantle billowing behind him as he headed back toward the upper stone stairs.
"Bring the elite six hundred and fifty to the eastern subterranean tunnels," Caius commanded coldly. "When Lorien’s vanguard strikes our outer walls, we open the gates beneath them."
