CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 153: THE HARVEST OF THE DEATH BOWL

  • Next Chapter

Silence fell over the Death Bowl, thick and suffocating, broken only by the crackle of residual dark fire and the gruesome crunch of chitinous jaws.

Along the elevated perimeter of the valley, the ten thousand recruits of the newly forged Quick-Reaction Force stood frozen in absolute awe. Caius had not deployed a single one of them. He had kept them stationed on the cliffs like an audience at an arena, forcing them to witness the terrifying perfection of the First Black Obsidian Legion. The message was etched into their minds forever: "Beyond this ridge stands my true army, surpass your mortal limits, or remain mere spectators to immortality."

High on the elevated ridge overlooking the rear, King Alden had watched in unadulterated horror as his grand host dissolved into a sea of blood. When the First Obsidian Legion shattered the final human phalanx and the Black Flame Demon turned his personal royal elite knights into charred ash, the King abandoned all pretense of royal dignity. Seized by sheer, primal panic, Alden whipped his horse around and fled southward through the mountain passes, leaving Duke Alban, his loyal nobles, and fifty thousand men to be slaughtered without a backward glance.

In the basin below, the slaughter was absolute. Of the fifty thousand who had entered the Death Bowl, fewer than two thousand remained alive. Five hundred had been captured on the field. The rest were scattered across the steppes, fleeing in blind panic toward the imperial frontier while the Boar Riders hunted them down with ruthless precision.

Thousands of subterranean Arachnes swarmed the valley floor, tearing through steel breastplates to gorge themselves on the fallen. Fresh flesh and mana-rich corpses were free sustenance, and Caius made no move to stop them, as the brood needed to feed, and the battlefield provided an endless banquet.

In the center of the carnage, Duke Alban knelt in thick, muddy crimson. His pristine armor was shattered, his silver broadsword snapped in two, and his face caked in dirt and dried blood. When he realized that the King had broken formation and bolted from the battlefield like a coward, a hollow, devastating realization shattered whatever loyalty the old Duke had left. Five hundred surviving Solarian knights and soldiers knelt in chains around him, broken and defeated.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the damp stone as Caius approached, flanked by Old Bones and the five blindfolded puppet chieftains.

Duke Alban spat a mouthful of blood onto the ground, glaring up at the eighteen-year-old Sovereign with hollow, broken eyes. "Just kill me," the Duke rasped, his voice trembling with a mixture of hatred, betrayal, and absolute despair. "The coward ran... Alden left us here to die. You've won, boy. Put an end to it."

Caius stopped a few paces away, his dark mantle rustling softly in the wind. He looked down at the defeated duke with cold, unbothered eyes.

"Kill you?" Caius asked smoothly, a faint, mocking smile touching his lips. "No. You will be imprisoned in the Citadel’s deepest vaults. Let us see if your precious, fleeing King marches back to rescue you."

Caius leaned down slightly, his voice dropping to an icy whisper that made the Duke's heart freeze. "After all, my father once marched into the deepest dungeons of the Underdark to rescue your daughter from the dark elves... The question is, Duke Alban, will your king do the same for you?"

Duke Alban’s breath hitched, his eyes widening in pure horror as the realization struck him. Before he could speak a word, Old Bones gestured with his arm, and a squad of Heavy Infantry dragged the screaming Duke and his remaining officers toward the lower iron gates of the Citadel.

For the human survivors, death would have been a mercy. Brought into the damp vaults beneath the fortress, each prisoner was forcibly implanted with a crimson Slave Bead directly into their spinal column.

Unlike the mindless puppets, these men retained their full sanity and consciousness, yet they were bound in absolute obedience. Every evening, as darkness fell over the cells, the thread-arrays within the beads activated, forcing their minds to relive the terrifying, vivid horrors of the Death Bowl in an endless loop of nightmare. Several broken knights attempted to slam their heads against the stone walls to end their own lives, but the control of the Slave Beads instantly locked their muscles, denying them even the release of suicide.

Standing on the high balcony, Old Bones watched the last of the prisoners dragged into the dark depths before turning to Caius.

"The kingdom will be thrown into utter panic once news of this loss breaks, My Lord," Old Bones murmured, a wicked glint in his pale eyes. "What is our next move?"

Caius turned his back on the blood-drenched valley, his violet eyes gleaming in the dark. "We wait. Let the fear fester in King Alden's heart."

Three weeks later, an official diplomatic courier under a white flag of truce arrived at the border checkpoint, bearing an urgent, magic-sealed royal decree from King Alden. The letter formally demanded Duke Alban's immediate, unconditioned release, warning that the full remaining might of the Solarian Empire would raze the steppes if their grand duke was not returned.

Sitting calmly upon his obsidian throne, Caius read the royal demand, a cold, amused smirk spreading across his face. Without a word, he grabbed a piece of blank parchment, penned a single line in dark ink, and handed it to Old Bones to send back to the royal capital.

The response was simple:

"Come and rescue him."
