CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 152: THE OBSIDIAN VANGUARD
High above the blood-slicked basin of the Death Bowl, Caius stood atop the ridge, looking down at the crumbling Solarian lines. The wild Orc fodder had softened the imperial ranks, while the subterranean Arachnes and the five puppet chieftains had shattered their cohesion. The moment for the decisive, catastrophic stroke had finally arrived.
Caius chose not to deploy the ten thousand recruits of the Quick-Reaction Legion. Instead, he raised his right hand to unleash his true masterpiece: the five thousand elite Orc veterans of the First Black Obsidian Legion. These battle-hardened survivors of the Unification War stood in massive, flawless cohort squares reminiscent of ancient Roman formations. The chaotic, clan-divided hordes of the Shattered Steppes were gone, replaced by a single, terrifyingly disciplined war machine.
At the heart of every single legionnaire burned a Legion Bead, a compressed sphere of black obsidian mana etched with four intricate, overlapping thread-arrays. The Environmental Absorption Array drew raw nature energy directly into their bodies to continuously replenish stamina. The Martial Synergy Array sharpened reaction times and amplified muscle output beyond natural limits. The Absolute Loyalty Anchor bound their souls permanently to Caius. Finally, the Arachne Hive Link connected all five thousand beads directly to the central Master Core in Caius's mind sea. Through this mental lattice, the entire legion shared sensory data, anticipated threats, and executed complex tactical maneuvers instantly without a single verbal command.
Leading this unstoppable host down the ridge were three terrifying entities from Caius's inner court nodes. The Black Flame Demon charged at the head of the center, a towering horror with horns wrapped in roaring dark fire and obsidian skin cracking with orange magma veins. Beside it leapt the Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger, its fur rippling with violet electricity and its four-foot ivory sabre-tusks crackling with kinetic charge. Flanking them was the Arachne Princess, her lethal humanoid figure encased in obsidian-black armor, four blade-like chitinous spider-arms flexing from her back as her dual curved swords dripped with corrosive shadow-venom.
At Caius's silent command, the five thousand veterans descended the ridge in five massive, impenetrable squares that locked together like gears in a furnace.

On the outer flanks, one thousand Heavy Shock Cavalry mounted on monstrous, iron-armored dire-boars initiated the assault. Their momentum hit the Solarian flanks with the force of a landslide, iron-plated tusks impaling horses and tearing through foot soldiers while the riders swung heavy war flails from their saddles.
In the center of each cohort, three thousand Heavy Infantry held the front edges of the squares. Clad in seamless black plate, these frontline juggernauts locked their massive tower shields together to form a moving fortress of iron, methodically crushing the human troops before bringing their broad war axes down in brutal, rhythmic swings.
Positioned safely within the rear of each cohort square, five hundred Support Units provided a fluid, ever-adapting core that responded instantly to the shifting flow of battle. Operating with flawless spatial awareness through the Hive Link, sharp-eyed Orc archers loosed heavy black-shafted arrows in precise arc trajectories whenever an imperial squad tried to group together. Field shamans monitored the health of the front ranks, weaving dark elemental mana through the air to reinforce weakening shields, while agile scouts darted between the gaps to plug unexpected breaches or intercept flanking maneuvers.
Clearing a path through the very center of the carnage were five hundred Elite Guards. Chosen from the strongest veterans across the five unified tribes, these vanguard shock-troops operated as the absolute tip of the spear. Wielding dual-handed broadswords and massive morningstars, they hunted down human officers and war-mages with feral precision, cutting through elite Solarian guards and carving open pocket after pocket of resistance.
Beside the legion, the Black Flame Demon incinerated entire phalanxes in roaring dark fire, while the Sabre-Lightning Tiger blurred through the lines like violet plasma, electrocuting war-mages before they could chant a spell. The Arachne Princess glided alongside her subterranean kin, her dual swords slicing through steel breastplates while her spider-arms impaled fleeing officers.
Through the hive network, the five cohort squares adjusted their boundaries fluidly, expanding, contracting, and reforming around the chaotic Solarian army like a tightening iron fist. Duke Alban watched from his dying mount as his grand host dissolved into shrieking chaos. Surrounded by the five grand puppet chieftains, the Arachne swarms, and the flawless, shifting march of the First Obsidian Legion, the Duke dropped his sword into the blood-soaked dirt. The Death Bowl had claimed its prize.
