CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 143: A PRICE FOR BREATH
Cold wind whistled across the courtyard, carrying the metallic scent of fresh blood from Vesper's corpse. Five thousand Orc juggernauts stood on the precipice of absolute slaughter, their growls vibrating through the stone like an impending earthquake.
High on the balcony, Caius leaned his forearms against the dark stone balustrade. His pale eyes glinted with dark, razor-sharp malice.
"How do you propose to negotiate for your lives, grandfather?" Caius asked, his voice dripping with smooth, mocking disdain. He tilted his head slightly, scanning the sweating face of the Solarian noble. "Convince me. Give me a single reason why any of you should leave the Steppes alive today."
Duke Alban swallowed heavily, his knuckles white against his sword pommel as his eyes darted from the bloodthirsty Orc legion to the monstrous retinue standing at Caius's back.
"We... we bring the authority of the Crown!" the Duke stammered, his regal bearing completely crumbling under the pressure. "Kill us, and you bring the full might of Solaria down upon your borders! I offer... I offer an immediate non-aggression pact! Formal imperial trade recognition and ten thousand gold dragons in annual tribute if you allow our delegation to depart unharmed!"
Caius let out a single, breathy laugh that held no humor.
"Tribute?" Caius countered softly. "You offer me coin for the air you breathe in my house? No, Duke. Here is my counter-offer."
The young Sovereign leaned forward, his voice turning into ice. "You will return Castle Precipice to the Macrae bloodline. That fortress was granted to my father by the late King, earned through his blood as the Champion. Every Solarian soldier currently stationed within its walls will abandon the domain immediately."
Caius paused, letting the cold threat settle over the court. "And hear me well: leave everything intact. Do not dare strip its halls or haul away its wealth. If so much as a single pewter cup is missing when my forces take possession, I will ride into Solaria and burn five of your cities to the ground for that single cup."
Baron Corvus gasped, but Duke Alban could only stare, frozen by the terrifying certainty in the young man's voice.

"Oh... and do not dare test my reach," Caius added smoothly.
He snapped his fingers.
From the side flank of the courtyard, ten heavy Black Obsidian Legionnaires stepped forward, dragging five human men in heavy iron chains. The prisoners were dressed in dirty, practical tunics, disguised as common traders, but their eyes were completely hollow. They dragged their feet like zombies, their minds utterly shattered, muttering a single, repetitive sentence over and over in unison:
"Observe the Citadel... report to Duke Alban... audit the Steppes... report to Duke Alban..."
"My spies..." Duke Alban whispered, his face turning entirely pale.
"Liars!" a Solarian court mage shouted desperately, stepping out from behind the Duke. "This is vile dark sorcery! You have placed a mind-curse on random peasants to frame the Crown! We do not know these men!"
Caius looked down at the mage with cold detachment. "Do I look like I care what you think?"
He raised his hand slightly, pointing toward the fortress gates. "I will flay the skin from their bones, display their hides along the border, and carve my code of ethics into their flesh so your King remembers what happens when spies cross into my territory. Now... leave. And do not set foot in the Shattered Steppes again unless you hold my invitation."
Without waiting for a response, Caius turned his back on the court and walked into the Citadel's dark interior, flanked by his monstrous retinue.
As the heavy obsidian doors creaked closed behind him, Shaman Vrak stepped to the edge of the dais. The ancient Orc smoothed his pristine robes and clasped his hands together, his dark-gold forehead bead glowing softly as he addressed the remaining foreign delegations with astonishing, immaculate courtly grace.
"Honored guests of the Dual Sovereigns, House Vel'drin, and the Forest Kingdom," Vrak said, his voice ringing out with smooth, shocking sophistication that left the foreign diplomats stunned. "Please, step inside. You may have heard tales that paint the Shattered Steppes as a barbaric wasteland devoid of refinement, but our Sovereign holds far higher standards. We have gathered master culinary artists from across the continent, from coastal spice ports to deep underground enclaves."
Vrak offered a polite, sweeping bow, gesturing toward the grand entryway. "A feast has been prepared in the Great Hall. Tonight, I personally recommend trying the honey-glazed subterranean cave-eel, the roasted crystal-stag from the northern ridges, and our signature spiced obsidian-truffle tarts. Rest yourselves tonight; tomorrow, the true council between our nations shall begin."
The Dark Elves and Barbarians bowed respectfully, following the impeccably polite shaman into the warmth and luxury of the fortress.
Left alone in the center of the courtyard, surrounded on all sides by five thousand snarling Orcs who slowly parted to leave a single, narrow exit, the Solarian delegation did not say another word. Stripped of their pride and trembling in fear, Duke Alban and his knights turned their horses and beat a swift, humiliated retreat back toward the border.
