CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 142: THE GRAND CONVERGENCE

  • Next Chapter

The iron-shod gates of the Black Granite Citadel stood wide open, framing a scene of suffocating political tension. Cold mountain winds swept down the jagged ridgelines of the Shattered Steppes, carrying the heavy smell of ozone and damp iron across the grand courtyard.

Three distinct foreign delegations had arrived at the heart of the newly forged kingdom. But the atmosphere was far from a peaceful summit; it was a powder keg waiting for a spark.

To the west sat the grand palanquins of the Dual Sovereigns of Sun and Moon, draped in iridescent silk and guarded by shadow-curtain spellcasters whose faces were hidden behind golden masks. Standing directly beside the Moon Queen was a fierce dark elf warrior with striking violet hair, her hand resting on her blade with predatory vigilance. Beside them rested the shadowy contingent of House Vel’drin, elite, silent figures whose postures instantly betrayed them as master assassins. On the eastern perimeter stood the towering, fur-clad chieftain-diplomats of the Barbarian Forest Kingdom, leaning on massive bone-carved warhammers and eyeing the dark elves with open, predatory hatred.

These three factions held pristine, obsidian-embossed message tokens bearing Caius's personal seal. They had been formally invited to negotiate free-trade routes, territorial borders, and resource rights across the newly unified Steppes.

And then there was the Kingdom of Solaria.

Standing in the center of the parade grounds, surrounded on all sides by five thousand silent, jet-black-armored legionnaires, was the Solarian diplomatic envoy. Unlike the others, they held no formal invitation token. Driven by arrogance and a desire to intimidate what they assumed was a crude barbarian warlord, the Solarian Council had simply marched a heavy military escort across the border, effectively inviting themselves under the guise of an imperial border audit.

At the head of the human delegation stood Duke Alban. Draped in high-noble velvet and polished platinum armor, his face was a mask of cold superiority, though his eyes flickered nervously as he surveyed the courtyard. Behind him stood a contingent of silver-armored royal knights, a dozen court mages, and a quiet, hood-cloaked young woman named Vesper whose eyes remained completely void of emotion, bound tight by mind-sealing alchemy.

"This is an outrage!" spat Lord Oakhaven-Baron Corvus, a senior Solarian diplomat standing at the Duke's right hand. He gestured wildly toward the dark elves and barbarians. "Your Grace, we were sent to establish imperial authority over these borderlands! Why are we forced to stand in the same court as shadow-heretics and forest savages?"

"Silence, Corvus," Duke Alban muttered under his breath, though his hand rested tightly on the pommel of his sword.

The Duke’s eyes swept across the vast courtyard, taking in the terrifying discipline of the Black Obsidian Legion. There were no drunken rants, no loose formations, no tribal posturing. Five thousand Orc juggernauts stood like frozen statues of black iron, their forehead beads pulsing rhythmically with a faint, synchronized crimson light.

More disturbing, however, was the reaction of the other foreign powers.

The Dark Elves of House Vel’drin were not watching the Orcs; their masked elders were staring intently at Old Bones, who stood on the upper walkway smoking his pipe with a faint, mocking smirk. Meanwhile, the emissary of the Sun and Moon Sovereigns kept his hand near his casting focus, recognizing that the spatial arrays woven into the fortress walls were far beyond human architecture.

"They didn't just unify the tribes," Duke Alban whispered, a cold bead of sweat rolling down his neck beneath his high collar. "They built a sovereign empire, and invited every power on the continent to witness us walk into it."

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Thud.

The heavy thrum of a single war-drum vibrated through the stone floor, cutting off all whispers instantly.

At the highest landing of the central obsidian grand entrance, Shaman Vrak stepped forward. The dark-gold-rimmed Essence Bead Core embedded in the ancient Orc’s forehead hummed with terrifying intensity. Channeling his amplified voice through the mountain air, Vrak’s proclamation roared across the entire citadel grounds like thunder:

"ALL HAIL CAIUS MACRAE! SOVEREIGN OF THE SHATTERED STEPPES! MASTER OF THE OBSIDIAN CITADEL AND LORD OF THE FIVE GREAT TRIBES!"

A suffocating silence fell over the courtyard.

Duke Alban froze mid-step, his face draining of all color as the name Cullum Macrae echoed off the basalt walls. Cullum is dead, a cold panic seized the old Duke's chest, and the boy, that tainted bloodline I refused to ever accept or acknowledge as my grandson, was supposed to have perished in the abyss three years ago when Castle Precipice fell. He survived? How is that young man standing here now?

Among the House Vel’drin delegation, senior elders bowed their heads in rigid, formal respect, while the Dual Sovereigns stirred in sudden, visible shock.

RUMBLE.

The fifty-foot-tall obsidian doors groaned and slowly swung wide open.

First to march through the threshold were the five blindfolded puppet warlords. At their head strode Krag'gath's puppet, a towering iron-clad construct radiating the crushing weight of its Iron Siege Breaker stance. Beside it came Borgath's nine-foot construct, exuding a bloodthirsty aura primed for its Flesh-Tearer Frenzy. Following closely was Gor'muka's construct, wielding a five-foot curved broadsword ready for its Dire-Fang Pursuit. Then marched Thrum's massive rock-skinned giant construct, heavy with the latent tectonic pressure of its Caldera Shockwave. Finally came Mal'kor's withered skeletal husk, gripping a dragon-bone staff wreathed in the chilling weight of its Necrotic Miasma.

Out stepped the Black Flame Demon next, a towering nightmare with horns wrapped in roaring dark fire and obsidian skin cracking with orange magma veins, radiating a wave of heat so intense that the nearest Solarian mages recoiled.

Right behind came the Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger, its fur rippling with violet electricity, its four-foot ivory sabre-tusks crackling as its paws of condensed dark lightning left scorched marks on the stone.

Then walked Caius. Clad in simple, unadorned black robes that contrasted sharply with the vibrant court attire of the diplomats below, his pale eyes swept cold and unreadable across the frozen crowd, flanked by his five blindfolded puppet warlords and five elder shamans.

Finally, stepping out directly behind him was the Arachne Princess, a humanoid, lethal figure encased in obsidian-black armor, four long chitinous spider-arms flexing above her back while dual curved swords dripped with corrosive shadow-venom.

A collective shockwave swept through the assembled diplomats. Upon seeing the Arachne Princess standing obediently at Caius's heel, the Dual Sovereigns of Sun and Moon trembled violently behind their golden masks. The violet-haired warrior beside the Moon Queen gripped her hilt until her knuckles turned white.

For thousands of years, the Dark Elves and the Arachne had waged a brutal, bloody war for resources in the Underdark. The Arachne were untamable horrors of the subterranean deeps, yet here stood a royal Princess, docile as a shadow, bound completely to Caius's will. A desperate, covert hunger ignited within the dark elf sovereigns, burning to know what ancient magic had allowed this son of Macrae to break the untamable.

"The Kingdom of Solaria comes uninvited to my gates, yet demands the head of the table," Caius’s voice echoed across the courtyard, amplified by subtle spatial vibrations that made every heart skip a beat. "While my invited guests bring trade seals, the Crown brings steel and arrogance."

Duke Alban stepped forward, swallowing hard and puffing out his chest to regain control of the floor against the terrifying pressure radiating from the balcony. "I am Duke Alban of the Royal Defense Council! We come representing the Solarian Crown to demand a formal reckoning of these border territories and the surrender of rogue assets!"

Caius looked down at the Duke, his expression serenely ruthless as his gaze drifted briefly to the mind-sealed girl standing behind the noble.

"A reckoning, grandfather?" Caius whispered, the temperature in the courtyard plunging toward freezing. "Yes. A reckoning is precisely why I let you cross my border."
