CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 134: THE SOVEREIGN'S FAVOR
Deep within the central grand chamber of the Black Granite Citadel, five Orc shamans knelt in a rigid semi-circle upon the cold obsidian floor.
At their head stood Shaman Vrak, an ancient Orc elder whose weathered, scarred green skin was covered in primitive bone talismans and glowing ritual runes.
Before them stood Caius, holding an intricate, velvet-lined mahogany box containing five dark-gold-rimmed, diamond-hard obsidian beads—the Essence Bead Cores.
Caius looked down at the five elder shamans, his pale eyes completely void of emotion.
"Do you swear to serve me voluntarily?" Caius asked softly, his voice echoing in the vast stone hall. "Knowing that by accepting this gift, your souls and minds will be permanently tethered to my will?"
Shaman Vrak pressed his forehead against the freezing stone, his four subordinates instantly following suit.
"We swear it, Sovereign," Vrak rasped, his gravelly voice filled with deep, fanatic reverence. "We will serve you forever, until our blood runs cold and our spirits return to the ash."
"Kneel," Caius commanded coldly.
Vrak straightened his spine, baring his neck and forehead. Caius stepped forward, drawing a slender, surgical scalpel forged from compressed obsidian thread-metal.
With terrifying precision, Caius made a clean, sharp incision straight into the center of Vrak’s forehead, slicing down to the bone.
Blood welled up, but before it could pour down the ancient Orc's face, Caius pressed the Essence Bead Core directly into the wound.
Microscopic black mana threads instantly erupted from the bead, burrowing deep into Vrak's nervous system and spiritual pathways like living parasites.
Vrak threw his head back and let out a blood-curdling scream of pure agony. His muscles locked, his eyes rolling back as the artificial core forcefully fused with his skull, carving open a brand-new, artificial spirit sea within his mind.

Caius drew his hand back, using his thread-craft to instantly close the wound, sealing the diamond-hard bead cleanly under the skin.
He performed the exact same brutal surgery on the remaining four shamans, their guttural screams echoing through the grand hall one by one until all five knelt trembling, their foreheads glowing with faint, dark-gold runes.
"I would not have granted you these cores had I not recognized your raw talent," Caius said smoothly, wiping the obsidian blade clean with a silk cloth. "Unlike the mindless thralls or the bound soldiers of the Legion, you retain your free will, your intellect, and your individuality. But in exchange for your absolute loyalty, I offer you what your kind craves most above all else."
Power.
Slowly, the writhing agony vanished from the shamans' faces, replaced by utter shock.
Raw, ambient mana from the surrounding earth began drawing violently into their foreheads, flowing directly into their Orc mana cores.
The Essence Bead Core acted as an artificial spirit sea, expanding their mental capacity tenfold and amplifying their spell-casting channels beyond anything an Orc shaman could naturally achieve.
"Test your new strength," Caius ordered, stepping back.
Vrak raised his trembling, green hands. With a simple flicker of his intent, a surging orb of dense, dark-green elemental plasma materialized above his palms, instantly compressing into a concentrated sphere without requiring a single chant or ritual dance.
The four younger shamans gasped in sheer awe, feeling their own spell channels brimming with unprecedented, terrifying power.
It was a total success.
Caius's pale eyes narrowed slightly. Now... time to test the fail-safe.
Reaching into his spirit sea, Caius mentally tapped the hidden Master Key connected to the secret subterranean core matrix. He selected Vrak's Essence Bead Core and subtly exerted a micro-fraction of destructive pressure.
Without warning, Shaman Vrak collapsed onto the floor, clutching his skull and screaming in horrifying, violent agony as if his brain were being boiled alive from the inside out. Blood leaked from his eyes and ears as he writhed on the stone.
The four remaining shamans gasped, recoiling in utter dread, their faces turning pale beneath their green skin.
After three long seconds, Caius released the pressure. Vrak flopped onto the stone, gasping desperately for air, his body soaked in cold sweat.
Caius let out a soft, light laugh that chilled the shamans to their very bone marrow.
"Do not worry," Caius said lightly, looking down at the trembling Orcs with a faint, amused glint in his eyes. "I was merely checking a mechanism. He is not a traitor... yet."
The four shamans stared at the human teenager sitting above them, a wave of profound terror washing over their minds.
They realized then that they were not just favored servants—they were test subjects, bound forever to a cold, calculating monster who held their lives in his hands with a single thought.
