CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 133: THE SOVEREIGN'S CITADEL

Deep within the central expanse of the Shattered Steppes, the ground swelled into a jagged range of dark mineral deposits known as the Black Iron Hills. At the base of the highest, most towering peak, the construction of a legendary fortress began.Thousands of Orc laborers, their massive muscles slick with sweat and dirt, hauled colossal slabs of obsidian and dense, carbon-infused basalt from the low quarries. Overseen by veterans of the five unified clans, the preliminary phase focused on the vast subterranean labyrinth carved deep within the volcanic bedrock. The subterranean layout was engineered with brutal, mathematical precision around a vast central grand chamber, from which nine distinct sub-chambers radiated outward like a sprawling, symmetrical web, mirroring the nine points of the sovereign's banner. Heavy, ribbed arches of dark stone supported the crushing weight of the mountain above, resting on massive, rune-carved foundational pillars that locked the tectonic plates in place. To illuminate the suffocating darkness, massive chunks of luminescent azure crystal were socketed deep into the polished basalt walls, casting a steady, cold glow across the high-vaulted ceilings and mirror-smooth flagstone floors.Once the subterranean complex was firmly anchored, construction shifted to the surface.Upon the highest peak rose a staggering bastion of sheer black granite. Its outer walls towered over three hundred feet high, vertically channeled and polished smooth to prevent scaling, crowned by narrow, jagged battlements resembling the fangs of a beast. Heavy iron portcullises, forged from the melted scrap of conquered siege engines, guarded the tiered gateways, while narrow archer slits and strategically placed murder holes lined the ascending approach.Directly before the primary approach of the citadel lay the Death Bowl. It is known. This colossal, sweeping natural depression carved into the valley floor was so immense that it could easily accommodate six full combat legions, totaling over thirty thousand troops, drawn up side by side in full battle formation. Yet, this vast expanse was a fatal trap for any invading force. The sides of the bowl were walled in by vertical, razor-sharp jagged ridges of black basalt that jutted toward the sky like the broken teeth of a trapped beast, entirely sheer and unclimbable. There was no other route; any hostile army foolish enough to attempt a siege of the citadel was forced to funnel directly through the narrow mouth of the Death Bowl, walking straight into the primary killing fields beneath the towering ramparts. Orc shamans moved along the high parapets, their voices chanting ancient incantations as they carved glowing runes of protection into the granite lintels. But the ultimate defense was woven by Caius himself.Standing atop the highest rampart, his pale eyes glowing softly, Caius utilized his Arachne Thread Art. Drawing upon the Crown Core, he manifested millions of microscopic, black mana threads, weaving them deep into the atomic structure of the granite blocks, mortar joints, and load-bearing pillars. This invisible web of spatial tension bound the entire fortress into a singular, structurally integrated monolith capable of absorbing immense kinetic momentum and neutralizing high-tier magical assaults. It took a full year of tireless labor to complete the citadel. To secure the perimeter of the Black Iron Hills, Caius stationed his five blindfolded puppet warlords at key choke points around the range and the mouth of the Death Bowl. Krag'gath, Borgath, Gor'muka, Giant King Thrum, and Grand Necromancer Mal'kor stood like silent, immortal sentinels at the border passes, their chest-embedded essence cores humming passively as they guarded their master's realm.Deep below, within the subterranean complex, three of the nine outer sub-chambers were claimed by Caius's summons. The Black Flame Demon occupied the first chamber, its obsidian skin cracking with orange magma veins as it sat in silent meditation within a depression of cooled volcanic glass. The Arachne Princess took the second sub-chamber, her four chitinous spider-arms folded as she rested amid intricate, shimmering webs of shadow-venom. In the third chamber, the Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger lay on the stone floor, violet electricity crackling through its fur and ivory tusks against the dark rock.Bound to Caius's Crown Core, the three summons drew upon the passive energy circulating through the central chamber, resting until the Sovereign of the Steppes called them forth again.
