CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 121: THE SOVEREIGN OF BONE AND FLESH
Hours later, the high vaulted ceiling of the Skull-Throne Hall echoed with the terrifying, rhythmic purr of the Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger. The massive beast lay sprawled across the dais, its shadowy tail flicking against the cold stone while Caius casually leaned back on the iron throne, idly scratching behind the tiger's crackling, lightning-infused ears.
To his right stood the Black Flame Demon, its towering frame radiating wave after wave of blistering heat that turned the ambient air shimmering and distorted. To his left, the Arachne Princess rested her two main blades across her lap, her four razor-sharp chitinous back-arms opening and closing with unsettling, rhythmic precision.
At the foot of the dais knelt Garak, an ancient, stooped Orc steward clad in faded furs, trembling so violently his forehead slapped against the stone floor every few seconds.
"R-Raise your head," Caius commanded softly, his pale eyes glowing like cold coals in the dimly lit hall.
Garak forced himself to look up, swallowing hard as the Sabre-Lightning Tiger opened one glowing eye to track his movement. "My... my Lord Macrae. The stronghold is yours. The bodies in the courtyard are being burned, as commanded."
"Forget the dead," Caius said, leaning forward. His hands rested on the armrests of the throne. "I am here to plan what comes next."
The dark memories of Castle Precipice resurfaced in Caius's mind, bringing back not just the blood of his father, Cullum, but the sight of the Kingdom’s royal army standing idle on the distant ridge. Thousands of armored soldiers, banners snapping in the wind, simply watching the Orc horde breach the gates.
They had denied reinforcements. They had allowed his people to be slaughtered.
He didn't just want revenge on the beasts who struck the blow; he wanted answers from the cowards who watched it fall. And to force a kingdom to answer, a single man was not enough. He needed an unstoppable force.
"If I am to march on the southern border and demand an answer from the King," Caius said, his voice dropping into an icy register, "I will need an army that can shatter cities. Tell me of the Shattered Steppes, Garak. How many clans remain?"
Garak’s tusks chattered, but he hastily pulled a ragged leather map from his robes, spreading it across the bottom step.
"T-There are five Great Clans across the Steppes, my Lord," Garak stammered, pointing with a clawed finger. "Krag'gath's Iron-Skull Clan was only one. To the east lie the Blood-Moon Berserkers, to the north the Grave-Walker Necromancers, to the west the Dire-Fang Riders, and deep in the volcanic wastes, the Ashen-Crag Giants."
Caius studied the map, his Eye of the Loom mapping the geography instantly.
"And how does one unite five clans that despise each other?"
"By the Right of Conquest and Blood-Oath," Garak whispered, bowing his head lower. "The Orcs follow only absolute strength. Krag'gath held the Iron-Skull through terror. If you carry the skull of a Grand Chieftain and defeat the remaining warlords in single combat, or crush their vanguard, their blood-code demands they bow. Unite the five skulls, and you become the High Sovereign of the Steppes."
Caius smiled, a cold, ruthless expression that chilled the old steward to his bones. He reached down and gave the Sabre-Lightning Tiger one final, fond pat on the head before standing up. His dark traveler's cloak swept around his ankles as his three summons snapped to total attention behind him.
"Then we begin the conquest," Caius said, looking toward the northern expanse beyond the hall. "Gather the surviving Iron-Skull captains. They march with me at dawn."
Deep within the secluded sanctuary of the keep's underground chamber, Caius stood before a massive stone slab. Resting upon it was the colossal, headless corpse of Warlord Krag'gath, carried down from the courtyard by trembling hands as he had commanded. Shielded in the darkness by his three summons, Caius prepared for his first attempt at organic manipulation. The Black Flame Demon stood like a burning statue at the threshold, the Arachne Princess perched silently upon the ceiling with her dual blades drawn, and the Black Sabre-Lightning Tiger curled at his feet, its violet static humming a low, protective frequency.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Caius closed his eyes, sinking his consciousness briefly into his inner world to inspect the Crown Core.
The liquid obsidian sphere pulsed with dense, cold authority, illuminating the void of his soul. Suspended right beside it was the newly harvested Orc Essence bead, a turbulent, sickly green orb radiating the raw, unrefined rage of the fallen warlord, extracted straight from his crown chakra. Caius observed the bead with absolute disdain. His Crown Core possessed a limited number of spiral sockets, precious metaphysical slots reserved for assimilating high-tier soul arts and supreme magical affinities. The mere thought of permanently embedding an Orc's filthy essence into his divine core repulsed him. Orcs were tools, scraps to be used, worn down, and discarded.
I do not need to refine it, Caius thought, his pale eyes narrowing within his spiritual space. I only need to puppet it.
Withdrawing his awareness back to the physical world, Caius reached into his spatial ring and retrieved the pulsing green essence bead. He approached the massive, bleeding stump of Krag'gath's neck.
This was his first time attempting to weave living flesh and bone together. Extending his hand, threads of liquid obsidian mana spun outward, intertwining with strands of violet spatial lightning and dark kinetic energy. He began to shape the shadow threads and raw matter, building upward from the severed vertebrae.
The process was crude and unrefined. Muscle fibers knotted unevenly, greyish-black shadow-flesh fused clumsily with green hide, and the jawbone formed with jagged, imperfect angles. It lacked the smooth perfection of nature, a stark testament to his maiden attempt at threading flesh and bone, yet it held the massive, terrifying dimensions of the warlord.
When the rough, heavy skull and face were fully formed atop the neck, Caius paused. While Krag'gath’s native orc mana core remained entirely intact deep within the corpse's chest cavity, pulsing with the raw, brute physical energy that fueled his gargantuan frame, that physical reservoir was fundamentally different from the extracted crown essence bead, which held the warlord's ego, dominance, and command over his own nervous system.
Holding the pulsing green crown essence bead in his palm, Caius thrust his obsidian and spatial threads directly into it. The threads burrowed through the turbulent green energy like a swarm of metallic vipers, violently unravelling Krag'gath’s residual will, stripping away its defiance, and tightly binding every single strand of its consciousness to Caius's absolute command.
With the bead thoroughly rewritten and tethered to his soul, Caius pressed the re-engineered crown essence directly into the open crown of the newly formed skull.
The bead sank deep into the bone, immediately sinking its roots downward to interface with the body's native mana core in the chest.
The newly woven head twitched violently. Deep within the empty, fleshy sockets, the puppet's eyes flared open with hollow, green fire, entirely subservient to the dark threads holding its mind together.
Satisfied with the grotesque structural integrity, Caius added his final touch. Remembering the raw disgrace he had dealt the warlord in the courtyard, he took a strip of pitch-black fabric and bound it tightly over the construct's newly formed face. It was completely blind, yet its massive frame, notched armor plate, and gargantuan stature were unmistakable. Anyone who had ever feared Krag'gath would immediately recognize the nightmare standing before them.
With a soft hiss of spatial energy, the colossal and blindfolded puppet of Krag'gath stepped down from the stone slab, dragging a massive shadowy waraxe behind it.
"Perfect," Caius murmured, turning as his three summons fell into formation behind him.
Caius walked out of the keep and onto the high battlements overlooking the central courtyard. Below him stood the assembled army, one thousand heavy-armored Orc warriors, berserkers, and mounted wolf-riders, compiled from the surviving Iron-Skull forces and gathered border clans.
A tense, uneasy silence blanketed the courtyard as the thousand warriors stared up at the human who had slaughtered their chieftain.
Then, the blindfolded, crudely re-headed construct of Krag'gath stepped up onto the battlements beside Caius.
A collective, horrified gasp echoed through the thousand-strong horde. Orcs stumbled backward, pointing in sheer disbelief at the undead silhouette of their former Grand Chieftain now standing obediently as a chained hound behind a human boy.
Caius looked down at the sea of green skin, his voice amplified by spatial mana to echo across the entire valley.
"Krag'gath thought he ruled the steppes," Caius said, his pale eyes sweeping over the silent horde as the blindfolded corpse twitched behind him. "Now, he is just the first chain on my shadow."
Caius flicked his wrist, sending a sharp jolt of dark threads through the puppet.
"Kneel," Caius commanded.
The massive, fifteen-foot frame of the dead warlord instantly stiffened, its joints groaning as it dropped heavily onto one knee beside the boy, a sickening display of absolute subjugation. A shuddering breath swept through the ranks below.
Caius raised two fingers, pulling the threads upward. "Rise."
The puppet snapped back to its feet with terrifying mechanical speed. Caius pointed a finger toward the sprawling horizon. "Face east."
The blindfolded head instantly pivoted toward the eastern pass, the shadowy waraxe dragging heavily against the stone.
Caius smiled coldly, his voice ringing out with finality.
"March."
Caius turned toward the eastern pass, his dark cloak snapping in the gale as the puppet strode forward at his flank. The thousand Orcs below raised their weapons, letting out a thunderous, terrified roar of submission as the war-march toward the second clan began.
